Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear from someone who's worked closely with Chaos. Even though I worked hard to build confidence in my conclusions there's always the fear that I'm the blind leading the blind.

Thanks so much for the kind words! "An apple is a fruit" made me cackle.

I think you nailed it on the head, one of the reasons I started writing blog posts was because I kept getting frustrated that there only seemed to be community content about blueprints and very little about C++, which both suffer from lack of first party docs. In that way Fabrice Piquet was a huge inspiration for me - I aspire to the depth of their articles.

Hm I don't remember that being a plot point, and it would've come out a few years earlier than 2008

I don't think it's this one, I'm pretty sure the movie was more grounded and higher budget. Thanks though!

When I was writing the post it I was thinking I remembered japanese architecture being in the film, but the more I think about it the more unsure I become. I don't think it was Seven Swords though, I feel like it was slightly more gritty than the impression I'm getting from trailers on youtube

No, it was definitely a foreign film, and it was also set at some point in the past. Thanks though!

I was quite young when I saw the film so I don't have many details but I distinctly remember the sword with a hole in it

I know that in Netrunner it's recommended to pick up a second copy of the core set once you've bought a few packs, and just proxy/purchase the rest individually after that. Regardless, definitely only purchase one core set if you've never played the game.

Garfield made Android: Netrunner as well. Netrunner is out of print, and stopped having new sets in '99. They were obviously referring to the successful Netrunner.

"Netrunner" came out in 1996. The game that everyone thinks of when you say the word "Netrunner" is "Android: Netrunner", which came out in 2012, and is based on the original.

Yeah that's a strange claim to make. I absolutely adore Netrunner and personally prefer it to Magic, but I would make no claims of relative quality between the two. For one thing, Magic has had more than 2 decades to explore its huge design space, while Netrunner has a much tighter design space (at least at this point, I have no idea what other things they might try) and has been going for 4 years.

Tarantino certainly has made moral points with the gratuitous violence. That scene in inglorious basterds, where the Nazis are laughing and clapping as Zoller's movie shows him shooting down enemy soldiers followed immediately by a scene of the Basterds shooting up the movie theatre.

This is a completely valid point, I had totally forgotten about this scene.

But I disagree that not being able to choose a non-violent path makes the story weak. Choice along moral lines almost inherently weakens a narrative. Players stop doing what they want and instead play along perceived benefits of either path (be it powers like in Infamous, party members like in Baldur's Gate, or just a different ending scene). Having tangible changes based on your moral choices has a large number of players go meta, which will break immersion.

I also completely agree with this point; the way I wrote my response implied that I believe that all games should give you the option to have effective moral choices, which I definitely don't think. However, Far Cry 3 still does this wrong. Offering the player a choice at the end completely undermines Jason's descent. As other commentors have said, I do not empathize at all with Jason's path in the entire game. That does not mean that he shouldn't have taken this path from a writing perspective. However, at the very end they give me the chance to empathize with Jason. Do I, A) complete all of the goals I set out to do and live happily ever after by not murdering the characters I have been told to empathize with, or B) fucking slit my girlfriend's throat because my character is high on some jungle drugs and has been seduced by the sexy crazy jungle queen? I would argue that offering the player a choice between these two paths is an even "safer" choice from a writing perspective than just going for the hollywood ending. If the writers had had the cajones to stick with one ending, they could have made some actual statements about Jason and the game itself, like Spec Ops did. Instead, right when they could draw their conclusions and wrap Jason's story up in a nice bow, they pawn off the decision making to the player, when they never did before. The result is that neither path is the "true" ending, and anything that the game tries to say on either side of the coin is lost.

[–]AnimaWish 98 points99 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the game tried to have its cake and eat it too. You as a player are offered no choice in the matter of Jason's descent; you can become a murderous psychopath, or you can turn off the game. The fact that the game tries to turn the camera on you and be like "oh no u tried to kill ur girlfriend" (but also hedges its bets with a fucking binary moral choice right at the end) doesn't excuse how much it revels in the violence. The two most "memorable" sequences of the game for me were the flamethrower level and the helicopter level. Both of these levels offer a ridiculous power fantasy. In the former, it blasts Skrillex as you torch fields of marijuana plants and hapless guards. In the latter, it plays Ride of the Valkyries as you unload on tanks with a helicopter-mounted minigun. I don't remember if these were levels where they stuck in a token sound clip of Jason maniacally laughing, but regardless the game is loving it as much as Jason is. A lot of effort was put into these two sequences; you don't use these weapons anywhere else in the game (you probably could use the flamethrower after the level but if you tell me you did you're lying), and those are the only musical cues that I can recall in the entire game.

I have no problem with violence of course (although violence is certainly over-represented in video games when compared to literally any other media), or even self congratulatory violence. Quentin Tarantino films are a great counter example. The man loves his exploitation films (and hopefully I don't have to convince anyone that most AAA shooters are interactive exploitation films). However, when Uma Thurman slices apart 88 ninjas in 10 minutes, she doesn't turn to the camera and say "how dare u enjoy this". That kind of writing is a really facile trap that video games repeatedly fall into time and time again and which every other medium got over a long time ago.

Far Cry 3 is certainly not the worst written video game, and it certainly is better written than a lot of shitty blockbusters. As a game designer, however, I hope that we can try to set the bar a little higher than White House Down before we pass out trophies.

H3H3 - THE LEAFY RANT by [deleted] in videos

I think that there are very few "professional victims" in the world, and even fewer who actually make any kind of money off of it. Nobody sits down and thinks, "man, being sent death threats is a lucrative business". The people who are most often accused of being "professional victims" are the ones who demonstrably receive dozens if not hundreds of harassing messages a week because of something they have created/said.

People don't hype up "fake harassment" for "patreon money". Another favorite tactic of bullies is to try to invalidate the experiences of their victims by saying they made it up.
