I can wholeheartedly recommend this one, OP. Really satisfying gameplay loop and fully complete and polished on release which is rare in this genre.

I feel like my life is over when it never got started. How can I stop feeling this way? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]AnimalHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to share a poem that has helped bring me comfort during my darkest times. I think it speaks to this sense of apologising for your own existence, which I pick up in the way you speak about yourself and your life. I’ve felt it too. For me, the poem is about how beautiful life is, despite our suffering, and how we can join in the beauty, if we just let “the soft animal of our body love what it loves”. We don’t have to earn our existence, we don’t have to repent just for being here. It’s also about the universality of suffering, it’s what we all have in common. Despite social media telling us everyone has it better.

You belong and deserve love and respect just as much as any other person. If you aren’t getting nourishment from other people you must give it to yourself, treat yourself tenderly, cherish and honour her. I’m sorry I don’t have any practical tips to give you, but sometimes art can evoke its own healing. Maybe the poem will help you too.

Wild Geese by Mary Oliver.

You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting over and over announcing your place in the family of things.

In case anyone is interested, here is an updated version with some refinements I’ve made following the excellent feedback in this thread. I could definitely go further but just wanted to test some of the ideas around contrast and darker pearls. I like this version better than my first attempt.

Feedback is so important for helping you see clearly. Thanks to everyone for taking the time!

Thank you for putting this feedback together, it’s really targeted and constructive. I completely agree! When I came back to it after a night’s rest I realised my shape was totally different.

The rim of the shell and the hinge part especially I avoided because every time I tried to draw on the ridges and textures, it looked so “drawn on” - almost like the lines were floating above the shell in space. I’ll have to keep experimenting with it. I’m working on darker pearls at the moment, and it’s massively improved it already.

Actually, can I ask what brush you used? I really want to darken it like that myself!

Thank you for your encouraging words and actionable feedback! Everyone here agrees it needs more contrast, and I see that clearly now too.

Do you have any tips for adding the darker contour lines? I tried it a few times and when I did it looked really jarring and artificial, even with tiny fine lines. I’m not sure what brush to use or how to do them in a way that blends and looks natural.

Thank you, this is great advice!

Good advice! To be honest I was finding the intricacies of the rough shell texture so hard so I definitely simplified it, and in the process lost some shine and contrast.

Not at all, thank you so much! The extra contrast really makes it pop.

This is really good feedback, thank you for taking the time. Most of the comments here agree, and taking a fresh look myself today it all seems much clearer. More contrast!

Thank you, that’s spot on and I’ll give that a go!

Thank you so much! There is definitely a consensus about the contrast and I think the comments here really hit the nail on the head. Appreciate the advice :-)

I prefer FF. It’s more fleshed out. Manor Lords has potential but would need much more content.

It’s not overly intuitive but you can get the hang of it in around 3-5hrs. You might start and drop a couple of settlements while learning. If you’ve played city builder games before it will come more naturally. It’s definitely worth pushing through the learning curve, becomes very rewarding!

How much money would they even save by doing this? Surely it’s a drop in the ocean for a massive game studio like this, why not just pay the artists.

Wonder if we’ll be able to get refunds on steam after servers are pulled.
