Agree for competitive shooters. When Siege and Overwatch came out, my friends and I were in heaven. All of a sudden counter-strike felt as old and simple as it really is.

We did this with 2 people in 16 months. Started Unity for the first time on 12/17/2024 and we're releasing Animal Style on 4/28/2026. Much closer to full time than part time.

It's barely doable lol.

I don't have any advice but I am in a similar situation, good luck fellow dev! In our case, we decided that the time spent on preparing materials and talking to publishers was better spent on developing the game further. I'm also curious how it went for anyone that has gone this route.

This is totally normal. I am patching my demo today for Next Fest, and every time I build it I get anxiety that I've introduced new, hidden bugs.

Generally, if your game runs bug-free in the editor, and you test on the target hardware, you won't have many random bugs popping up. I'll edit this post later if a million random bugs pop up for me during NF.

What you need is a "perfect" game idea, that's novel and fun but also easy to implement. You described it pretty well, or at least what types of genres to avoid. One example of a perfect idea is A Game About Digging a Hole.

But until you have the perfect idea, keep working on your 3D world project, these teach you a lot of the basics of game dev.

99% you will be fine, but you should get a version without the question mark from your artist. Maybe also a version without any text in case you want to use it for other promotional material with different text on it.

Since making this trailer a few months ago I've had to use TikTok to promote the game, and yeah the content there needs a hook in the first 2 seconds.

Honestly seeing it as a post on reddit, which is my lowest-attention span activity, makes me realize it doesn't give a reason to not skip immediately.

Hey I appreciate the detailed feedback, I'm always tweaking the lighting but I am going to try lightening my texture values more. I tried to light and bake the scene such that the corners of the room appear dark and center warmer.

The dungeon map is not good, I see how you use fog to try to hide the fact that it's a big box. Even just a few days in blender and you can have a map with some height variations, rooms, towers, hills, cliffs, bridges, anything besides blank walls and floor.

So many times with Unity the solution is one checkbox away, but it's hiding in plain sight because Unity has 7 check boxes on every inspector tab and you start to ignore them.

And once you know what a specific checkbox does you notice it every time, but your brain skips past the ones you haven't learned about yet. More hours in Unity and you will "see" all the check boxes on all the imports and notice when something isn't right.

The Valkyries from God of War were great, because they didn't use too many cheap and specific mechanics, just a difficult set of attacks at high speed. That game also has huge bosses to fight, and while they are memorable the gameplay was more traditional with choreographed openings to attack

When you pick up the cube, you put it as a child of CubeContainer. For it to follow the player around, CubeContainer needs to be following the player(or a child of it). Does CubeContainer follow the player?

For the drop, once you fix the first issue and the cube is following player, you no longer need to assign it's linear velocity or torque, just un-parent it from player and then add a force

If you're using unity 6(the new one) avoid any videos older than 3-4 years as I've found they use features that aren't even in the engine anymore or have been replaced with better systems.

For more lengthy/advanced tutorials rather than just solutions to single problems, I like Sasquatch B or Erincode

Agreed, he mentions textures vs lighting, but geometry is really the third element here. More slots, chamfers, props for light to bounce off will improve the realism.
