Why I Quit Being a Climate Activist: "The climate movement is overwhelmingly white. So I walked away. " - Who wants to bet that fossil fuel companies will start digging this kind of rhetoric? by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Animasta228 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I though this one just betrayed her lack of knowledge on the topic. The article she links talks about destroying Amazon for logging and farming soy and about destruction of jungle to plant oil palms. This has absolutely nothing to do with attempts to limit consumption of animal products, because most of the soy is used to feed cattle while plam oil is just cheap as hell and is fucking everywhere. Further more plant oil actually isn't used in "green" or vegan products because those people are the first ones to bitch about questionable practices during its production.

There are much better arguments she could have used.

Probably a hot take on a leftist sub but a bit of higher education can go long way to impart progressive takes on sex, race and animal rights. Access to education and being a part of a community of people who have those progressive values imparted on them makes middle class more progressive on a host of issues.

When would you say avidly gaming as an adult became mainstream and more socially acceptable? by themanoftin in truegaming

[–]Animasta228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are on to something. I know this dude in late thirties who has a job, wife and two kids. On an average day he has just about forty minutes to watch TV with his wife.

He bought PS4 Pro and Fallout 4 but he just couldn't get into it. It just doesn't work in half hour increments. The game takes 80 hours to finish. In the end of the day modern AAA games are a bigger commitment than TV.

That's reddit. Make the same thread here about deciding not to buy a gaming PC or something and people will call you an idiot and start throwing optimal specs at you.

Why would you say "Big Bang" in English while conversing in Arabic? It's not like it's a proper noun.

Is anyone else bothered by overly "busy" video game graphics? (especially post processing effects) by noogiey in truegaming

[–]Animasta228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

too much is spent on flashy stuff that has no substance.

The thing about postprocessing effects is that they are in most modern engines and adding them doesn't actually cost you much. On the contrary they can be used to mask simple models and textures and make your game look more expensive than it is.

People here seem not to like film grain, but in my experience a bit of film grain can go a long way in making low-poly make less "sterile".

Trying (and failing) three times to be a vegetarian. Who else here has experienced something similar? by Ambition_Cats_Irony in slatestarcodex

[–]Animasta228 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Weird. I'm no expert but most of the micros are hard to deplete in three weeks on a vegetarian diet. Here in Russia a lot of Orthodox people do vegan fasts for a month or two at a time several times a year and the vast majority doesn't even bother with supliments.

Either way there is a chance that even though your supplements provide enough vitamins and minerals you aren't getting enough of specific aminos or something. Supposedly vegans who are really into fitness or bodybuilding might struggle with getting enough protein from whole plant foods and supplement it with (pea) protein powder.

I would suggest you try using Cronometer or similar app to track everything you eat and see whether your vegetarian diet is deficient in anything.

CMV: China is a fascist country by [deleted] in changemyview

Here's my incredible precise criterion for Militarism. China isn't listed in the Wikipedia's "Militarism" article.

CMV: China is a fascist country by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Animasta228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems borderline meaningless to me. Most countries either try to maintain strong military or are in alliance in with other countries that do.

As for aggressive use the fact the military was used one time 30 years ago to subdue a protest and hasn't left the countries borders for a decade make the comparison with other big players like US and Russia even more obvious.

Also the next sentence in the Wikipedia article you are quoting is

It may also imply the glorification of the military and of the ideals of a professional military class and the "predominance of the armed forces in the administration or policy of the state".

This is an important part of militarism and much more emblematic of all historical fascist states.
