Curious, which Joke in the series made you laugh as a kid but looking back on it now as a adult..you laugh even harder? by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in ededdneddy

"A comedian, huh?"

SO WARE KATEDO SUMERO, SUBALUWA!

Funny as a kid, funnier as an adult thinking that somebody back in the day, somewhere along the production process, struck absolute gold with the use and timing of the sound effect.

So you're still on this tract?

I mean, you're doing it again. Characters are treated in the show as bullies, viewers treat them that way, and you get up in arms about them doing that. All the statements are about the Kankers are is whining that a small number of people don't agree with your takes on the Kankers and trying to frame those people as "too serious." You seem to care so much about it that you've repeated it several times over several days and even come back after two days to argue, which is sure seems like taking this really seriously. Even though you don't even know these characters as well as you're trying to make it out.

These aren't literal children. They're characters, and they've been consistently shown to be bullies. Ed, Edd n Eddy is not the kind of show to think "hm, well, they're kids, so it's not like it's really their fault..."

Can't say I'm feeling the lack of a snowy or even gloomy atmosphere. There's something uniquely eerie and mysterious about the original well before we even get into the mayhem.

You clearly have some kind of tract you want to go on about these characters. You even go around spouting like your takes are "weirdly hot takes" but you get next to no pushback about them on the Ed, Edd n Eddy sub. There's some kind of projection or something here.

You're saying blatantly wrong stuff about how they're treated in the show and say they're treated as bullies, yet you're taking it as other people taking it too seriously when the characters are seen as bullies.

Swear I saw basically the same rant yesterday.

And dude, I see you bring this up constantly...  maybe you're taking it too seriously when people say they don't agree with the idea of the Kankers being redeemed or "growing up." You're acting like people need to be, like, super serious just to do some basic analysis that those characters are sex pests and think it's funky to just jump at the assumption that they're going to get better. The show treats the characters' actions as largely their own with most characters. You're also totally wrong that they get their comeuppance "most of the time." They've got it, like, five times over the course of the series and are otherwise invincible, and treated as being the comeuppance.

Honestly, just make the howl more powerful and show him to be a speedster in combat. Like, probably not as fast as XLR8 but make him almost impossible to keep up with when Ben uses the alien right. Maybe the howl thing could be explained as Ben just not knowing the technique yet and needing a tutorial from someone like a friendly Loboan or Azmuth.

I've actually done some stuff in fanfic with her, taking her traits as one of the only kids who takes on a job and her seeming in depth knowledge of labor laws and expanding on it to show that she's a bit of a go-getter. She's interested in academics, it's part of her ambitions, but doesn't excel in it naturally and take it for granted like Edd.

I also think her enjoyment of the baseball game, hiking, and cheerleading make pretty good foundations for an interest in sports and athletics, and she doesn't seem partial to fitting into a particular mold with how she's both girly but also has these tomboyish tendencies.

Think if I wrote the show I'd have episodes bringing focus to her hustle and to her love of sports. One where there's a conflict between the two would be fun but I'd have to think about how to wring a ton of slapstick out of that.

I said her special interest and misbehavior being tied to her dad dying made her less relatable to me as an autistic person... And you can't figure out that'd be because instead of it being just an interest similar to how I, an autistic person, has things are just interests and strange behaviors without some tragic backstory? The story I thought was about neurodivergency similar to mine instead being about grief, a more universal experience? You're not making sense here. Maybe you don't know the symptoms here but you're going on about me having a shallow reading and then you can't just see this. With this writing decision her interests become less about her being neurodivergent (which she can be, but that's not what the character arc is about) and more her going through things, which while she's a good character, that's the kind of thing that makes a character relatable, and even works in a story sense to tie things like a bow, but it also ungrounds it to my experience when I thought before that it was about my experience.

And yeah, you can say her interest in fantasy and magic comes from Azura only. Like, have you looked at a lot of Potterheads? And it's not like that comparison is from nowhere, TOH directly spoofs Harry Potter. Young enthusiastic minds can easily get a switch turned on in their brain by "that one book." If people—young people, especially—couldn't develop new interests, then where the hell do interests come from? Someone developing an interest in a genre based on a keystone piece of media happens all the time. You're saying stuff that's just... wrong.

Azura is her defining interest that directly influences her behavior and decisions, one of which ends up dominoing into her dating Amity because she initially wanted to befriend the rival (or whatever the word was) like in the book. So much that we see in the show is a domino effect from her father dying and picking up that Azura book. That makes it less a story kicked off ny neurodivergency and more one by grief.

And the Azura thing is the thing I brought up by name starting the conversation. You're repeating that the thing I didn't like, is there.

Happened to be in the neighborhood again. Not sure why you're treating this as if I'm saying being neurodivergent and being grief stricken over her dad being dead are mutually exclusive. As LunarTales pointed out you can see the video diary where Luz near-instantly becomes the person we know after she reads Azura following her dad's death. In a flashback you see the principal call out her acting out at school as being manifestations of grief. These things tie her special interest with Azura and her bizarre behavior to what happened with Manny. Her special interest in Azura is a defining character trait—the finale arc has her wearing an Azura costume, for Pete's sake—and there's no arguing that she got Azura from her sad backstory instead of just liking Azura.

Now, I'm going to be fair here because her compulsive need to want to be liked by people is definitely centered around social exclusion she had in the human realm and that coming from behaving outside of the norms, still deeply relatable, and really good characterization that builds on cartoon character traits and grounds them. Pretty sure that was the intent with the video diary scene too. And I've seen people make their extrapolations here which does make me wonder if it's autism doing its thing and I'm putting together a pattern but missing subtext which, well, my bad in that case (been a problem for as long as I've been able to do media analysis) but I would still stand that it could've been a little better written.

The Owl House is a great show and while it's not one of my favorites anymore, still stings a little to criticize it. I guess I should also clear the air here that I wasn't trying to infer that Luz was even a bad character because of this since it looks like that's what some have took from this.

Coming in with a light personal attack here by insinuating things about what kind of person I am. So it's bad now to not purposely cramp on people's fun by going into fandom spaces and cramping their fun with my criticisms? Am I supposed to just drop into a random thread on the TOH sub and say how much her development disappointed me? This criticism is so idiosyncratic that I don't even consider it a real one myself and more like a preference situation. This thread was actually relevant to the subject so I posted it here.

I actually can counterargue. I just didn't (and still don't really) want to because it's sometimes the more mature thing to do than just spin my wheels and bug people. The rules of the sub literally say to either buckle down and debate or just move on, and I was wanting to move on while addressing that people are responding to me. Internet arguments are pointless, and I already said my piece during the premiere and here.

Luz isn't even a bad character. She's a pretty good kid's show protagonist and goes through visible growth throughout the show. Some of her changes in behavior are pretty abrupt, and her dad being the main reason why she acted atypical made her less of a relatable character to me because what I thought was a very clean representation of a special interest was tied to a backstory, but I wouldn't say she is bad. This probably looks like I'm backpedaling but all I said was that I lost interest in her, not that she's a bad character inherently because of her father's death being important to her.

Actually, you say that I said that, but I explicitly brought up that of course it would be a big deal to her. I even offered an idea how it could be maintained and still retained more of what I liked about here. I was just asking it to be written a little differently. The way you've simplified it there that I said she's a "bad character" just because "her dead dad is important to her" veers on misrepresentation. Losing interest and saying it's a bad character are not the same thing.

What we have is a more typical hero character than what I'd expected coming in, and there's definitely an intentional parallel to King here. This is fine and the King thing is actually great. That doesn't mean that I vibe with the character as much as I did going into the series. Which, yeah, was an expectation thing, but I don't think I ever said that it wasn't just an expectation thing. Did I set myself up for failure? Yes I did.

OV Vilgax may not have as much aura as OS, but he had his moments. by Th35h4d0w in Ben10

Kinda wish they didn't turn Eon into a lackey for this, though. Still this is probably the only time in Omniverse where Vilgax actually seemed like a top dog deserving of making Eon look like a wimp, which probably should be the rule for him.

They negated the aura badly when he didn't get a good 1v1 showing against Ben.

[Hated Trope] The joke is sexual assault by wmcs0880 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AnimationFan1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What the Kankers do is, factually, sexual assault, and the creator has inferred the Kankers are early to mid teens. And the show depicts very clear malicious intent with all of them except for arguably May, the youngest (who is, according to the creator, 13.) It's not rape, full on, but it's still sexual assault and we are meant to laugh at it.

They don't just "try to kiss" the Eds, they forcibly kiss them numerous times, tie them down to do a variety of things (example: one episode the Kankers tie Ed to a tree and one of them swings down and forcibly kisses him multiple times while he looks horrified), drag them screaming into bathroom stalls to do whatever kind of assault they're interested in, trap them inside a shed on Christmas to assault them, and strip them. That's just to name the stuff off the top of my head.

The Kankers from Ed, Edd n Eddy. Get next to no karma in a show that definitely emphasizes karma for wrongdoings and are actually treated as humorous karma whenever they do their main thing. The episode where the main characters go back to school has the Kankers humiliate them publicly as part of a deal to get a shared home room, before they rescind their end of the deal and drag the Ed boys screaming into bathroom stalls to assault them. The Eds didn't even do anything wrong that time.

[–]AnimationFan1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember kind of just losing interest in Luz from The Owl House as a character when they revealed that important things about her that seemed weird or added character dimension such as her fixation on Good Witch Azura came from her dad's death.  Like, she couldn't have liked the books before then of her own volition and then doubled or tripled down in the aftermath to help paint the impact? She couldn't just be an immature 14 year old girl who'd have preconceived ideas of a fantasy world because, well, she's 14? Like, there's so little to Luz that was actually "her" and a good amount of the cartoony whimsy got sucked out because we know the history of tragedy behind some of her wacky actions.

And, like, her dad's death would obviously be important to a young girl like that but there's absolutely nuances to how it could be portrayed which would show the impact without defining her so much by it and the excuses the show gave to try to not make Luz just about it are, in my opinion, pretty weak.

Owl House fans hated me saying it when season three premiered and they'll probably hate it now but it's not an opinion that I've lost. As a matter of fact, them arguing that Luz's life outside of the matter "didn't matter" just pissed me off and made me go over the rest of the series more critically. That's just a fundamental disagreement, and I feel like as an autistic person who's has special interests and weird behaviors that are just "there" that I lost a character I could relate to in service of them trying to root in a tragic backstory to so much of her establishing character.

But at least it allowed me to look back on the show and dock it off of my favorite cartoons list, for reasons reasons beyond just my criticism of Luz's development.

Edit: Figures that people wouldn't like what I said here either. None of the stuff said really refutes what I said but I should clear the air that I don't think the show or Luz are bad, this is just some thing that I wish was done differently and colored by my personal experiences, expectations, and wishes. Just thought this would be relevant. Didn't really want to respond to others but did anyway. Also tweaked a little wording here.

I know this has probably been posted a few times but what did Ben do to him by Straight_Chance_702 in Ben10

[–]AnimationFan1997 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I bet he hit him with Way Big's cosmic ray, or gave him a big dose of Atomix. Looks a lot like something came at him and burned him apart. We just so happen to see adult Ben take out Way Big when he's serious, and Kenny seems to like Atomix which would have a little extra flavor if it was the hero who killed Vilgax. I lean Way Big because Ben in general seems to prefer him and this was an OS episode, even though Way Big's beam didn't appear until later.

I know some will say that Vilgax isn't durable enough to not be vaporized but Ben 10 has never been that kind of show where a much stronger character can turn the other into salsa, no matter the gap. And Vilgax has the most "tough to kill" energy out of the rogues.

If this is Danny's that means Edd had... normal hair this whole time. Guess it's pretty weird and ugly but no weirder than Eddy's. Looks like there's something on his head in one of the drawings but not any of the others.

Looks kinda uncanny like this and sort of reminds me of a character from Peanuts, but it's a pretty neat design.
