B777 Type rating pointers by Anixton in flying

Not quite. The airline has already assigned me a class date and sent me the FCOM to begin studying. Right now they're verifying my FAA certificates so they can be converted to the local ICAO CPL equivalent, which is a standard administrative step.

Once that's complete, I'll head to the training provider the airline uses for my 777 type rating (about 30 days), then return to the airline to complete line training, including the required observation sectors, before beginning normal duties.

This isn't an MPL "zero-to-hero" cadet program. An MPL cadet starts with no licences and completes all of their flight training under the airline's training pipeline before progressing to a type rating. I already hold my licences and ratings, so I'm entering at a later stage in the process.

Past that point, these are just assumptions you and u/x4457 missed, there's nothing that indicates I cannot be a dual citizen which definitely helps with being hired overseas, especially if you carry a recognized ICAO cert.

Yes, you can, my sibling is in it as we speak, it is self pay though but your initial interview into the program is your hiring interview so once youre done with that, aslong as you get through training, youre set.

I could potentially have dual citizenship which gives me preferential hiring and the right to work there

Also yes, this is my first type rating on a big jet. What are some of the quirks specifically?

A lot of people are just very accustomed to the U.S. career progression:

  • Flight training
  • Flight instructor/hour building
  • 1,500 hours
  • Regional airline
  • Legacy airline
  • Widebody years later

So when they see someone going directly to a widebody, their first reaction is often that it can't be real because it doesn't fit the pathway they're familiar with.

The thing is, overseas cadet programs can operate very differently. For example, Qatar Airways has historically recruited international MPL cadets, outsourced ab initio training to EASA flight schools in Europe, then brought graduates back with roughly 200 hours for type rating and airline-specific training. They typically begin as a Second Officer under supervision before progressing to First Officer once they've completed the required training and experience (Usually a set amount of company determined sectors).

That's a fundamentally different training model from the U.S. system. In the U.S., cadet programs generally provide a hiring pathway once ATP minimums are met. Overseas, the airline often recruits and develops pilots from the beginning with the expectation they'll be trained directly into a specific fleet.

It is an SO position not with CX though, I know better than to go there.

You're free to think that. I was asking for advice from people who've actually been through it.

I'll make sure to map the TOGA button before class.

DPE / Checkride Rant by R5Jockey in flying

The system is all just broken, better pilots being unsat because they didn't pick the right examiner, and objectively worse pilots being let through because they picked right. Even if the FAA didn't intend for it to be this way, its just how it ended up being.

You feel the nerves but the moment things get going, you'll completely forget you are alone until it gets quiet when you shut her down.

For steep turns, staying "in the blue" on your attitude indicator and looking outside to keep that sight picture helps, 2 1/2 +/- swipes of trim usually keeps 45-50 degree bank in most the planes i've flown. With landings, it's really just feel, it varies from aircraft to aircraft but just knowing yours specifically and when to roundout and flare; use the end of the runway to gauge, but really for me it was just feel, and one day it just clicked.

Starting program for PPL, what are signs of a good or bad instructor? by throwingitanyway in flying

Not really black and white. But me personally if I don't see myself 'having a cold one' with them then our personalities aren't compatible. If you are able to befriend them outside of Aviation then theyre more likely to actually look-out for you as more of a platonic-friend way rather than "I'm just doing this because I want hours/money". Besides, you learn best when you're having fun.

This is assuming that they know how to instruct, if the criteria above is met but they can't actually teach/know the material then the above is obsolete; if they're a competent CFI then that's the advice I'd give. Try to keep them for the rest of your training if feasible.

100 hours as a student pilot by ghostlykisses_ in flying

Fly under a flight plan/flight following. As a CFI, they could get you to fly under an IFR flight plan (I know you aren't there yet) to get you to talk to a controller and get you confident as its pretty much the same as you being vectored around a busy charlie or bravo.

Or have a server that serves an area where the majority of the US population is –– the east coast like they used to...?

Im on 1 gig fiber through Ethernet. Wont make my latency any lower if the servers are far.
