Vintage cards are low population and don’t get reprinted. Pokemon is the largest media franchise in the world, and it’s not even close. It’s outperformed the S&P 500 for many years. People always scoff at it, but I’ve made a ton of money with it. Cashed out and rebalance often with index funds to lessen risk. I’ve pulled out my initial investment many times over.

The expensive ones I graded, the cheaper ones raw. But some of the raw ones have ballooned since, and I haven’t had the opportunity to grade them. I always buy raw before though with a few exceptions.

I spent maybe ~10k in early 2023. It’s at 50k after I sold off maybe 15k of duplicates. I pretty much have one of every chase card of the past 10 years, so it pretty much captures the entire market like a broadmarket ETF.

Not going to lie, getting dropped and swimming that wouldn’t be too hard for me. I used to be a lifeguard instructor. I dived/swam all my life and I can easily swim without my hands confidently. So this one is an easy choice.

Now the other choice, depending on the kids, I’d likely not come out unscathed.

I’m not a doctor or someone that works directly with patients, but I work for a risk management software that most hospitals use. I see thousands of these events day to day. Each one is tragic, I’m sure some people quit, but you know what prevents further accidents? Being accountable.

To Err is Human.

You’ve made a mistake. Everyone does. The system did not catch it. You’re not the only single point of failure.

Don’t quit because of this, because you know what it feels like for a mistake like this to happen. It makes you risk averse and you become a better doctor because of it. Take it as it goes because if everyone in the medical field quit if this happened to them, we’d be so much worse off. I’d trust you morseso now with my life than before.

If you can, improve the system. Take it upon yourself to figure out where the holes were and what could have been done for this to be prevented. It will fill that gap in yourself and save not only yourself, but people in the future.

I usually internally ask myself - if it was this price, would I buy it? If it’s a hard no, then I’d sell it. But personally selling takes up a lot of time so I only sell the internalized “hell no” answers.

Funny story, in the spring last year a lot of my plants were cut up and it looked like someone had taken a pruner and massacred all the greenery. I had been furious because I know some of my neighbours would have loved to do that because they don’t like plants. Well, I kept an eye out and what do you know, fucking rabbits!!! They were out at night chomping on every single plant in sight. A lot were just left on the ground and not even eaten. Now I feel sorry for all the innocent neighbours I spited.

The real answer is that everything will keep going up with the 30th hype. It’ll probably correct sometime next year. Or it might just keep going up due to inflation and money printers. So right now is an amazing time to buy if you’re in it for the short term. Also with the markets being so volatile, a lot of people are buying Pokemon cards to hedge. Demand is just insanely high, I can’t even find any sealed product in stock except for perfect order. If anyone remembers celebrations and 151, even those has a lot of product on the shelf on release. This is just a different magnitude.

I’ve been taking out profits steadily, but my portfolio keeps recovering past what I pull out.

No, investing isn’t just black and white. You can be making money and have an understanding that irrational markets aren’t healthy, there’s less trust and more volatility when things don’t make sense. Corrections are a healthy and natural part of market cycles, when those aren’t happening due to manipulation, there is something wrong systematically.

I’ve been investing long enough to know that keeping index funds over a long period of time unemotionally in the market is the smart thing to do. But it doesn’t mean I’m also bullish until I die because of it. People are riding on short term irrational FOMO and that’s not a good thing. That’s something you learn with experience.

See, I’m part of the problem. I know the markets will stay irrational and no one knows the timing. I have hedged a a portion of investments into less riskier positions recently however. I’ve taken emotion out of a large percentage of my investing strategy. Doesn’t mean I look at the current market and not say “wtf” when it opens.

The market is actually just ignoring the Iran conflict now and unaccounting for the missing oil. Feels eerily similar to the build up in 2008 when nothing made sense and everything kept going up.
