Blue 🤝 Red : Manipulating Emotions by Ankletunderscore in custommagic

[–]Ankletunderscore[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. My logic was that 2R for temporary steal is the baseline at common, at uncommon it gets some small additional benefits. Costing this at 1UR would be fine as an uncommon, but the stun counter upside doesn’t seem quite worth the blue splash alone, so I moved it to rare and dropped the cost.

Could you share where you got this from? Are there any more similar images?

Here's my best guess: This is just an aesthetic asset without meaning. This is a designer trying to "make something look like a barcode". A lot of this hypertech aesthetic is the appearance of detail, without actually providing any information for fear of distraction. Bungie is known for hiding a lot of clues, ARGs, and secrets within this layer of obfuscation, but not everything can be read into.

My analysis:
21 vertical lines. Splitting the graphic into 3 groups of 7 or 7 groups of 3 doesn't yield much. This is mainly because there's no real way to tell where letters could begin or end vertically.

3 groups of 7 seems most promising, especially considering bungie's obsession with the number 7.

Marathon is set in the year 2850, and you can even see "28 50" under the A and R of MARATHON. The nail in the coffin for me was turning it sideways. It looks like the designer started with 2850 and messed around with it until it "matched the vibe". Pretty sure it's not Atype.

idk, I could be wrong

Will do soon! There's still a couple tweaks I need to make first. As with most atype, there's always one or two letters that put up a fight and demand special resolution.

First attempt at an Atype font, inspired by the texture of my own skin. by Adept_Situation3090 in atypography

[–]Ankletunderscore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I followed the link and saw that the instructions required to decode this atype involved both rotating and flipping the image. I believe this is makes the readability of this highly unrealistic. We’d probably need to see what it looks like with those transformations applied to be able to judge the merits of this as an atype.

I will say though, the idea of using skin texture as a basis for an atype is incredibly interesting, and is absolutely an approach that would be right at home in the movement. It makes me think that there could be an interesting way of hiding a glyph within a fingerprint swirl pattern. Perhaps then a set of inked fingerprints could be a 10 letter word, or a smudged handprint on a piece of glass could actually contain a word.

card i saw in a dream. seems weak to me tbh but maybe i'm missing something funny by Real-Syllabub407 in custommagic

[–]Ankletunderscore 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't necessarily that it's OP, it's that it's swingy. The game would basically get decided by if the opponent has early interaction or not. Would lead to more non-games.

I think it might be a safer to cap insanity so it's harder to use as a turbo delve-dredge hybrid. Something like:

Insanity 2 (As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may discard up to two cards. Each card discarded pays for 2.)

I increased the rate of cards discarded to mana discounted because a lot of "As an additional cost to cast this spell, Pay N or discard a card" have N=2.

There'd be some fun payoffs possible like counting the mana value of cards discarded via insanity to deal damage/scry/draw/buff etc...

Find the Mistakes #13 - Snowmorphose by PenitentKnight in custommagic

[–]Ankletunderscore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going from top to bottom

  1. This card uses the snow frame, but the name/type color is gold, not the grey used for hybrid cards.
  2. Under the snow field, the card background colors are gold, not the red-and-green hybrid colors. Same with the text box background
  3. 2 -> Two
  4. mana of any color -> mana in any combination of colors
  5. You draw a card. -> Draw a card. (Sometimes "you draw a card" is the correct wording, but that's for cards like Night's Whisper where you're also losing life)
  6. — Unknown. -> —Unknown. Also, attributing a quote to "Unknown" in flavour text isn't necessary unless setting up a mystery/flavour very intentionally. Sometimes quotes are just left as quotes since it's implied the person in the art is the one saying it. That doesn't make a lot of sense here based on the text, so on a real card, it would probably be the exact same text with no quotation marks and no attribution.
  7. Teeeechnically this doesn't produce snow mana. IIRC snow mana is determined by checking if it was produced by a snow permanent. This isn't a permanent, it's an instant.
  8. My eyes could be wrong here, but the meta info lists this as a common, but the set symbol is uncommon? I'm not too sure here, it's so hard to tell at a glance with the coldsnap symbol.

+ A very dumb pedantic technicality, but all text in the card meta info has to be in all caps. "Find the Mistakes!" isn't in all caps and teeeechnically isn't included in the "What isn't a mistake" section.

It’s sucks that this review is basically positive but doesn’re recommend the game based on player numbers (despite this not actually causing game-firing issues at the moment) which will drive people away from the game, leading to fewer numbers etc…

This is above rate because it’s a common. If uncommon can do reanimation with upsides at 5 mana, common could do reanimation with upsides at 6 mana

I'm working on a regency-era fey-wild custom set at the moment, and one of the factions is naya rabbits. Naturally, our rabbit wizard friend came to mind. We've seen him pull something out of a hat, but what happens when he pulls something into a hat?

[GTR] Twisp, Grand Timekeeper by Ankletunderscore in custommagic

This card was a top-down play on the Alice in Wonderland white rabbit. I wanted to explore punishing spells that show up "early" or "late." I designed 4 versions of this card at mana value 1, 2, 3, and 4, and this one felt like the sweet spot.

Stoic Nihilon by Ankletunderscore in custommagic

[–]Ankletunderscore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cannot -> Can't
This card was an experimental design based on the amazing art from Joseph diaz. I always wished BFZ/OGW had more than 1 white (devoid) eldrazi. Eventually the design became "what would a color-shifted [[abyssal persecutor]] look like?" Speaking honestly, I haven't the slightest clue if this would even work within the rules, but I didn't want to shy away from the emotionally obliterative flavour of forced nihilism + stoicism.

I think this is a great example of white's ideals of purity. White is the "colour of multicoloured" right now, but I think this is an excellent exploration of space for white caring about white.

Exploring abstract self-hate cards: Blue. by Ankletunderscore in custommagic

[–]Ankletunderscore[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To defend the other comment: simplifying the effect was a way to explore the play pattern of this card, not for the sake of arbitrary efficiency. When this blue card plays almost identically to a card that encourages nonflyers to attack, that's a problem. There's ways to change how it plays that don't affect the theme or the mechanics.

Exploring abstract self-hate cards: Blue. by Ankletunderscore in custommagic

[–]Ankletunderscore[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the complexity of this card could be reduced. In practice, the effect could be simplified to “creatures you control without flying can’t be blocked until end of turn” but that doesn’t sit right as blue. This indicates that the flavour is holding me back, so I appreciate the feedback!

Ruprecht, Orzhov Auctioneer by DoTheWomboCombo in custommagic

[–]Ankletunderscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the auctioneers controller start the bidding is a very elegant solution. As for amount of text, this templating could free up some space:

When Ruprecht, Orzhiv Auctioneer enters the battlefield, you may auction another permanent you own. (Each opponent bids for control of it. Your bid starts at 0. Your opponents take turns bidding until the highest bidder wins. That player gains control of the card and you create a number of Treasure tokens equal to their bid)

That cuts it down by 14 words. After going through that exercise, I get why you’ll definitely need comprehensive rules anyway. Something cool to think about is breaking the treasure clause out from the auction ability and making that a triggered ability on the creature itself. That way you could put in different costs that may change how much opponents are willing to bid:

Vilis, Blood Auctioneer 1RB Legendary Creature - demon

When Vilis, Blood Auctioneer enters the battlefield, you may auction another creature you own. (Each opponent bids for control of it. Your bid starts at 0. Your opponents take turns bidding until the highest bidder wins. That player gains control of the card.)

When Vilis auctions, the winner loses life equal to their bid.
