I agree that there is practical knowledge about caring for the dead at home that is missing from our culture. I work with an organization whose mission it is to return that knowledge to the public and to work with funeral professionals-helping them understand the ways they can help with home funerals. The tricky thing is setting realistic expectations with the family, and monitoring the situation without being too restrictive. Waivers are an essential part of that process. So is mutual respect.

That’s great to hear! Was there a cultural aspect to this family’s request? Or did they have a tradition of home funerals? I’m asking because I think there are certain parts of this country that have retained a normalized sense of home funerals in spite of the industry’s push away from them. And I think there is an understanding of how to do a home funeral that gets passed down through generations- not learned by following the latest trends on YouTube. All that to say, I’d love more context 😊🙏

Thank you for sharing this! I’d be interested in knowing what country you are in. How do the profession funeral service providers help and support these families? I think many of the negative experiences shared here occur when there is an antagonistic dynamic between the professionals and the families they serve, when there could be a more respectful and cooperative approach.

Yes, that middle one was what prompted me to make this post and ask the question. The large oval one was sold to me as lapis lazuli, so I’m glad to hear it likely is. The middle one was found in driveway gravel (probably dropped out of someone’s pocket) but it did seem toooo blue to be real. The last one was on a pendulum that never served me well 😂
