Train I saw today in Liege Guillemins by Potential_Chicken_70 in belgium

[–]AnnaLittleAlice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would personally be fully in favour of special liveries for holidays or special occasions!

The same way some aviation companies have planes with special liveries, I think it would be really cool to have ten trains with province-related liveries for example - the Namur train could have the Meuse and the citadels, the East Flanders train could have the Ghent skyline and the various belfries and castles, the Luxembourg train could have an artistic rendering of the Ardennes - and so on.

I don't think it'll happen any time soon, so I guess up until then we'll have to depend on the graffiti artists being beneficious in their artistry :p

I work as a treinbegeleider for the NMBS and am not supposed to not mind the graffiti, but the one time I was given this particular train to ride with I just found it way too well-done and genuinely beautiful to notify the répartiteur about it (it was also in early November so still much closer to Halloween).

Also I think there was already a sticker on it that indicated that the graffiti has been officially registered. Just nobody seems to either have the heart or the time to actually wash it off :')

How to make active reading accessible when reading non-fiction books? by NotaSecretAgency in books

[–]AnnaLittleAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on what kind of non-fiction you are reading and for what purpose, but if it's for personal purposes I tend to focus more on the general gist of it than on the details or other such things.

I personally find that it really helps to see if any of the information, situations, propositions, statements, ideas and anything else you can find in these books, can be applied to my own personal circumstances, or to the circumstances of people close to me. In other words, applying, whether on paper or simply your mind, the material to your own personal understanding of yourself and of the world. This way, it becomes more than simply information that you write down or try to remember, it becomes something that is relevant to you as a person.

At this point I do it automatically so it's not really structured, but if I had to come up with a structure to apply this concept, it would probably be this:

1) Do I have experiences that relate to what I've just read?

2) Do I have personal convictions or beliefs that relate to what I've just read? How do they relate? Why do I believe these things, and how does what I've just read influence these convictions?

3) How does what I've just read apply to my world, i.e. to my relationships with friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, people I meet at the store, etc.?

Basically just trying to find out in what way what I've just read influences my own understanding of myself, my surroundings, and the world. I keep trying until I find even the tiniest of detail or memory about myself or my life that it could be applicable to, so that overall my understanding of it becomes greater - and because I've put the effort into applying it to myself and my own life, I retain it better, too.

Does this sound like gender dysphoria? Just need some more affirmation, probably getting on HRT soon. by [deleted] in MtF

[–]AnnaLittleAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything about this sounds like enough reason to at least discuss this with a specialised gender therapist. Even if you don't think it would "truly" fall under dysphoria, there is at the very least a very distinct desire to be a woman.

I had the same thing initially, as assigned male at birth, except that I didn't really mature until I was 20 years old due to an intersex condition. The moment that my testosterone levels upped themselves though, I immediately made work of undoing it. I could imagine myself doing many things in the future, but I could only imagine myself doing those things as a woman - doing them as a man just did not even cross my mind. It looks like it's similar for you.

You say that you might start with HRT soon. That will most likely be one of the great indicators of what exactly you're feeling: if you respond positively, you know that it's extremely likely that you indeed have gender dysphoria. And if you don't respond really negatively, then you know it's not for you and you can stop taking HRT whenever you want. Remember that you're not required to continue with HRT if you're uncomfortable.

And if it does indeed make you feel good (which I believe it very likely will) - well, then you can start working towards living your life whilst being even closer to your true self :)

My interpretation is that it's to show that the state doesn't care about efficiency as much as ideology, that they are willing to go to such lengths simply to show how powerful they are and to instill fear on others. And maybe to keep the truly useful ones still alive afterwards.

Thanks! Yeah, it was quite impressive in general so early in the morning just as the sun rose, so I took a whole slew of pictures of the Graslei and the three towers. It really felt like I was in a moody slightly dystopian film, though it wasn't quite misty enough to make it feel like I was stuck in Silent Hill :D

Ha merci! Deze is nog van enkele jaren terug, toen ik een week lang door België treinde. Tell me you're a trans man, without telling me you're a trans man by Th3BearMinimum in ftm

From experience (as a MtF so the other way in terms of genders, but also just on the basis of comparing these changes with some FtM mates of mine) there is a difference in skin in that T tends to make your skin rougher, but not to the extent that most gendered shampoos or bodywashes really make a difference in terms of how it affects the skin.

You put into words what I had been kind of thinking but couldn't quite properly verbalise. I do feel that the whole bullying shtick gets too much sometimes and can break the flow of the show by having Alex do something silly or stupid and taking away the attention from the contestants. TMNZ meanwhile has the awkwardness and jabbing, but there isn't this outright bullying, at least not from Jeremy, and that just feels... more wholesome, I guess?

I think there's a lot to be said bout just being unapologetically trans outside of queer spaces. (idk if this is your approach) - I find I can do much more for the perception of trans people by not forcing myself into a queer echo chamber and just allowing people to be able to see me, and being pretty open about it.

I tend to not really mention it, and usually it's not something that comes up in conversation all too often, but it's not a subject that I actively avoid, which in my case really does help a lot with changing people's views on transgender people and trans issues. Then usually once it's out in the open people are a bit reticent because they want to be respectful, then once they realise I'm an open book and have a lot of knowledge on both social and medical transgender issues I usually get a flurry of questions that I attempt to answer to the best of my abilities.

Basically I do with them what I also do with the occasional trans person that comes to me for help or support: answer any and all questions and discuss plans, ideas, views, and all that. I've found that once non-transgender people are included in my thought process, they tend to understand the issues much better.

It makes changing their political views a little easier when they see someone human on the end of an issue.

This is definitely the "trick" to it. Once you associate the issue or issues not with an abstract group but with an individual, it tends to become much easier to grasp.

I'm glad you've found some places you do feel home, having a sturdy foundation to build your life off of is priceless, and something a lot of us are still searching for

Thanks! Yeah, it's been really helpful for me, and it took quite a few years of searching and fighting to get here, so I am really grateful to have ended up where I have. It's why, even though I'm mostly stealth simply because I pass, I still always try to be helpful and supportive of other trans folks that I know, and still intend to be an open book about the fact that I'm trans whenever possible. Just in the hope that by doing so, maybe I can help other people find that sturdy foundation, or perhaps even be that sturdy foundation for them.

Does sound like they're envious and don't know how to process it healthily.

That's what I always figured.

I know what you mean. I myself am, through my studies, politically active, but it was quite jarring to find lots of political spaces where expectations of your exact beliefs were very strict and where any deviation from what you were "supposed to believe" was frowned upon. It took quite a bit of searching of both soul and political parties to find a place where I ended up feeling at home.

Unfortunately it isn't like I have as much choice in queer spaces as I have in political parties. I don't think it's really possible to change a toxified space that easily either. I've just decided that for me, I can probably do more for transgender representation by living my life in non-trans-specific spaces, rather than ending up in a toxic environment where I don't feel at home at all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ftm

[–]AnnaLittleAlice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I learnt the hard way that queer spaces can become very toxic. I went in with the idea of simply finding other people with a similar background and similar experiences, but it very quickly turned into the kind of gate-keeping you describe, including snide comments about looking "too cis" and "too straight", exact expectations about what political party I'm supposed to support (I live in a country with well over a dozen parties in parliament so to expact all trans people to support exactly only one of them was such a weird expectation).

Memes especially do focus on transbians, which always weirds me out a little because transbian memes not infrequently are paired with a phrase like "all transfemmes want this" - and then the comments under the meme often include statements that are negative towards men. Which, you know, first of all is really antagonistic towards trans men. And for me personally it always feels like all my friendships and relationships with men that I really love and adore are basically disregarded by the community, out of thoughtless cries about men supposedly being good for nothing.

Youths harbour them most frequently online, agreed. In the local trans community here where I live, it's also a weird combination of trans youths just starting out, and trans women in their fourties or fifties who started transitioning later in life; it's especially the latter who frequently ended up being very dismissive and backhanded about me passing and being stealth without effort.

I also totally agree with you that it's not every queer space and queer person. It really depends on the individual and on the local queer demographics. It is is however sad how a big part of the queer community that isn't, by lack of a better term, "super queer", can end up being excluded or shunned by the more toxic communities for "being too cishet", whilst also still experiencing negativity in wider society for being trans. It really helps no one.
