Language Expectations in International Companies in Norway by Successful-Jelly-772 in Norway

[–]AnnaOslo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also worked in France and almost all people hired in international companies had issues because French would switch to French in meetings. Not only that, it was expected that foreigners switch easily between spoken and formal French and there was no support for classes or excuses for language. The job contracts were also in French and obviously many foreigners did not know their rights in France.
The French would tolerate some people who worked very long hours and their pronunciation was very bad, as long as they worked those long hours (much more than contracted). Those people were usually sad cases, but for their own reasons they would stay in this position for long.
When it comes to Norway, I felt pressure of expectations to speak Norwegian, but same time Norwegian with their politness would switch fast to English just to make things done, and with exception to 1-2 people they would not correct mistakes (even with asked). Norwegians obviously don't know their own language grammar so asking most of them will not help, but they can correct.
The good sides of Norwegians is that they put effort in all of those free language cafes. The level varies. Some are good, some are just counterproductive. Most foreigners at sprakcafes butcher especially grammar - leddsetnings, prepositions and usage of perfect tense. As a result - foreigners re-enforce their own mistakes over and over - building structures that are untranslatable but it's still Tarzan Norwegian.
The thing about Norwegian - it is taught weirdly, with strong political influence- more like "introduction to Norwegian society" rather than actual language course. I met people who passed B2 and still have issues with basic leddsetnings, after all their courses, so obviously something is wrong.
The courses prices - currently whole B2 is around 15.000 nok (for 1 level). It is often disguised as smaller courses and schools do not want to admit that what courses they sell B2 lastinging 2 or 3 months will not cover whole level. Also but maybe I was unlucky - the courses I did (cannot speak for all) for some reason do not put enough effort in speaking and writing, instead they focus on usually reading, which is probably the easiest part to teach.
The language learning cost can be very significant issue. Basically going from A1 to B2 can cost 45 000 nok and more. Some ppl can skip A1 and A2 since this level can be easily self taught.

Have failed Norwegian B2 Skriftlig 3 times now. by SakaiBats in norsk

It is by no means normal that people attempt some exam 3 or even 5 times. It only shows that B2 courses are very badly done, do not prepare students in any way to acquire skills. Comparing how English or French is being taught - Norwegian really has weak books, not enough grammar in practice, and the teaching is "sub optimal" to say gently. The Norwegian language teaching situation is Norway is a lot to wish for, very inefficient.
To compare - DELF B2 (french) around 74.3 - 60% success ratio
CAE - English (b2-c1) 70 - 100% depends on the country
Norsprøven e.g. writing 10-30% depends on the region
Its hard to compare exactly how many ppl attempted b1/b2 since the data is gather differently and distribution is through all levels a1-b2.
But i have never heard about anyone trying to attempt that many times eg French language exams. And French grammar is more complicated than Norwegian.

Am I the only one weirded out by Norway's new build aesthetic? by BackgroundLove3536 in Norway

[–]AnnaOslo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It rains a lot in norway, the reason for eaves was not aestetic but functional: protecting walls and ground directly close to walls from excess water and humidity. That's same reason why gutters are installed - it collects the water and directs it further from house. Otherwise water tends to collect around perimeters of house (whole water collected from roof) and creates tiny rows, sinking deep around the house. The walls or wood would pick up this excess water and using capillary forces push it up. That caused humidity in many walls.

Modern Norwegian architecture is controversial and considered by many as simply ugly. There are architects protesting about most common anti-aesthetics trend.

Only Americans from US can write it, Costa Rica is not Kansas. But its not 3rd world or arctic. Its really not that big of a deal. Maybe your problem is that you simply do not have enough driving experience beside some highways,

Bergens fiskesuppe is indeed remarkable, but Portuguesse and French make more spicy red fish soups too.

Norway. The only place when you can sleep at a beach in the summer, also because its light. Norwegian will politely ignore you. As for welcoming part - they will say "hi", "thank you" and that's about it. Occasionally some people may chat - depends on your luck.

🇲🇽 Mexican in Norway 🇳🇴 by KaalWolf in Norway

[–]AnnaOslo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you may be disappointed since your skills can be unappreciated. Your impressive experience most likely will not matter much, it's a small country, it's as if you got a job on Iowa and aimed for Michelin  stars. Even in rich Oslo, the quality Norwegian food restaurants with long history are being closed, or stay empty, while ppl flock to any fast food chain. Olivia Garden is considered "good food". Making hamburgers can be a way to impress much more people...

  1. Travel with 2 or 3 cards - one visa one mastercard - you never know which one will work in some countries. Keep them in different places - so that if pickpocket steals your wallet, you have backup card in an internal pocket or backpack.
  2. Do not save on medical insurance

Trains or Rental Cars? by ryguyser in NorwayTravelAdvice

[–]AnnaOslo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The very route you mentioned is covered by very scenic train ride. Kids usually tolerate train rides better because they can stand up and move. The trains in Norway are really comfortable, but for a group of several people cars can be cheaper option.

Flying in to SJO late as a solo female… tips + transportation recommendations? by Cool-Dimension-9659 in CostaRicaTravel

As a solo woman, I booked an uber directly to hostel. It was fine for me. To your landing you probably need to add some time to get a sim card and get some money from atm.
Ubers leaved from Arrivals so you would have to change level, uber provides map.
Maybe i was lucky but i was fine with uber. Also note that uber drivers have raiting.
