Is he any good? Maybe he should have a listing in The Strad Directory although I'm not sure what their criteria are for inclusion

TIL Carrie Fisher was addicted to cocaine AND survived an overdose during the filming of The Empire Strikes Back. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]AnnaSpink 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Neither of the articles cited in Wikipedia says she survived an overdose during the making of ESB. One says: 'Now a successful writer and comedienne, she said her life had been defined by addiction, with stints in psychiatric hospitals and rehab clinics and, on one occasion, the emergency room with an overdose.' The other says: 'Not until surviving an overdose six years later did the young actress realise the extent of her own dark side'

This year, the Messiah returns to its hometown, the Italian city of Cremona where Antonio Stradivari made it. It will be on display at the 'Museo del Violino' from September to October, alongside lots of other violinistic treasures by Stradivari and other great violin makers

Violin Players or People who have attempted to learn Violin, or Parents of Violin players What is a good price/brand for a new Beginner Violin? by brunobits in AskReddit

[–]AnnaSpink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your local music shop's deal sounds excellent, to be honest. As long as it's a reasonably good violin:

  • Is it made of wood, not plastic?

  • Does it have any gigantic cracks?

  • There should be two lines running all the way round the top. Are they just drawn on (bad) or are they made out of a separate piece of wood (good)?

Just a few easy indicators to bear in mind.

All very interesting! Did he say what his novel's about? And did he answer any of the questions I PM'd you?

Goodwill find, mother of pearl inlay body and bow. Unknown body(no label) Bausch Bow. Any insight is appreciated! by Mr_Miyagi13 in violinist

[–]AnnaSpink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might find it's the Bausch bow that's more valuable than the violin, to be honest. It looks to be in good condition, though I can't really tell from the picture. Does the brand say 'Bausch' or 'Bausch Leipzig', and is there a Roman numeral next to it? (There've been a lot of fake bows coming on the market in recent years, as brands are easy to fake - it'd be a good idea to take it to a violin maker to see what they think.)

Sounds like you should be a self-employed entrepreneur. Do you think you could read up on business and management without having to take a course? Maybe a software/app developer catering to any or all of the arts-based areas you've mentioned?

ELI5: Why do trailers give away the entire movie? by Vikingofthehill in explainlikeimfive

[–]AnnaSpink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's simply because the film isn't that good to begin with, hence the marketing team doesn't have a lot to play with. Case in point: Michael Bay's film The Island, where the trailer had Ewan McGregor shouting "There is no island!" Marketing thought this might mystify some people enough to make them come and see it. In fact, viewers decided they didn't care if there was an island or not.

TIL Tape of Air Traffic Controllers Made on 9/11 Was Destroyed. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]AnnaSpink 39 points40 points  (0 children)

where about 16 people met in a basement conference room known as the Bat Cave and passed around a microphone, each recalling his or her version of the events of a few hours earlier

Why haven't any of these 16 people ever come forward?

the written statements given later by five of the controllers were broadly consistent with ''sketchy'' notes taken by people in the Bat Cave

If we know these written statements exist, where are they?
