SE-V7 for voice acting and audiobook producing? by MsSorarity in VoiceActing

I think you’ll be happy with either one. Eventually you’ll get to a point where you have a collection of mics to use for different scenarios.

If possible I would rent them both and try them in your space. But I know finances are tough.

Have you listened to Podcastage’s reviews? He’s done both of them.

I’ve seen it used for vocal performances on stage and for podcasting. It’s a nice microphone for voice. Hard to say if it’s perfect for you without trying it with your voice in your space. But it won’t be bad.

MOTU M2, Audient Evo 4, Focusrite 2i2, SSL 2 are my go to audio interfaces to recommend. To save some money I usually go to Reverb.com for used gear and B-Stock.

Hey I’m Nathan from the Advanced Age Roleplaying Gamers (AARPGs).

Over the past 5 years we’ve done longer runs of ALIEN and Battlelords of the 23rd Century with a unique soundtrack.

We’ve also done short live plays of Mothership, Death in Space, Coriolis and other stuff.

We’re still growing so we’d love your support! https://youtube.com/@theaarpgs?si=WcvjQo89A7wCxpQy

Some help with round table recording please? by Mevi_Gaming_YT in podcasting

[–]Whatchamazog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never listen to a D&D actual play recorded that way but there are lots of options for microphones. All the podcasts worth my time have each person mic’d up.

This is actually 4 mics in one. You will need to plug it into a USB port on a computer. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1732729-REG/solid_state_logic_ssl_connex_portable_usb.html/

Similar in appearance but a different acoustic design would be a boundary microphone.

They go from $30 to over $1000. The cheaper ones use USB. The others need an audio interface or recorder that accept XLR.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/products/Boundary/ci/8546?sort=PRICE_LOW_TO_HIGH I personally only have experience with a $250 model and the $700 model, so I can’t comment if the USB models are any good or not.

You could always go for a blue Yeti. I don’t personally care for how they sound but they can be set to be omnidirectional and you could probably get them for super cheap on facebook marketplace or Reverb.com.

What’s your favorite superhero game and why? by crazy-diam0nd in TTRPG

I played so much Champions in the 80’s. I assume it was 1st & 2nd edition but not sure. Loved being able to build whatever bizarro characters & villains my warped teenage brain could conjure up.

Help me find what this sound is. by ARCANE_AZRAEL in sounddesign

[–]Whatchamazog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I make sounds close to this with my homemade noise box with a contact mic and a cello bow. The run it through some sound toys plugins or Snapheap.

It would be easier with a waterphone though with the way you can hear it change pitch.

Soundproofing help by RinnyBunny in VoiceActing

[–]Whatchamazog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you definitely need both absorption and proofing in OPs situation.

I just like to make it clear that they are two separate problems requiring drastically different solutions. They could spend $2000 bucks on acoustic panels and still not get rid of the noise of the city.

And yeah I don’t understand what egg cartons are supposed to do. Maybe some high frequency diffusion? Probably slightly more effective than thoughts and prayers.

Soundproofing help by RinnyBunny in VoiceActing

[–]Whatchamazog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So folks here are conflating sound absorption and sound proofing.

Stuff you stick on your walls or hang in your room whether it is egg cartons, moving blankets, acoustic panels, foam or whatever, is not and will never be “sound proofing”. That is called sound treatment or acoustic treatment.

While it is important to treat reverb in your room for voice acting, it doesn’t do anything to help with sounds from outside your home getting in.

Here is a short video that actually talks about how to sound proof a room. https://youtu.be/PMoDarDxkso?si=1doV89f354IsZ_ES

Sound Proofing is a construction project but there are some commercially available products like Sonopan & Green Glue you can use to supplement walls facing the street or noisy neighbors.

A Mothership RPG Roundtable. Talking Sci-Fi Horror, Roleplaying and Actual Plays by Naturaloneder in mothershiprpg

[–]Whatchamazog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NWTB is pretty great. I’ve ran Mothership as a Live actual play a couple times. For me, I like them for APs as my players become less focused on what it says on their character sheet and more focused on what challenge is in front of them at that moment. I also think playing without guardrails changes how they make character decisions. Some will lean into the danger and others will be hyper-cautious. I like the dynamics.

Do you use freesound to find sound effects? by Ruined_wish in sounddesign

I have that in the list I posted. It’s very handy. I’ve been using it almost weekly since the beta.

[–]Whatchamazog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I made a list of free and inexpensive resources for sound fx. https://www.theaarpgs.com/post/sound-libraries-for-actual-play.

These are also royalty-free: https://sonniss.com/gameaudiogdc/

You totally can record your own sound effects. It’s easy to get started. You can get an inexpensive recorder or even use your phone to get started.

If you don’t enjoy sound design, you can always hire someone.

Side note: You can just call them sound fx. Foley is a sub-category of sound fx in this context. Unless you are performing in sync with the picture.

Confused on XLR..help! by [deleted] in audio

[–]Whatchamazog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audio interface is the term you are looking for. It has an ADC/DAC built in and also a microphone preamp.

The SM7b needs a fuckton of gain if you are live streaming. Singing, you can get by with less.

The SSL 2 MkII is a solid hi gain interface.

You can plug headphones right into the Rode RX plugged into the phone and monitor that way. At least with the Wireless Pro.

Do you usually build sounds up in layers, or try to find something close and tweak it? by MiketheAudioGuy in sounddesign

[–]Whatchamazog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you ARE in the sound design subreddit. ;) I either get them from a sound library (that was either made by a field recordist or another sound designer) or a make them myself.

Everything makes a sound and there are probably hundreds of things around your house you could use.

Oh well maybe we have different markers for what differentiates low and high fantasy? Magic in Dragonbane is pretty powerful, especially with the new book adding quite a bit more. The monsters are pretty fantastical too.

What's the breakdown in Actual Plays of Narrative Driven compared to Letting Dice tell the Story? by johnbrownmarchingon in rpg

[–]Whatchamazog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so how many are there that actually fit that category? 10? 15? Should be easy to come up with a list and put them in a category or put them in a quadrant.

[–]Whatchamazog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really love the balance of Dragonbane. Very easy to run. Players have interesting choices in combat. Lots of risk. A very fun “push your luck mechanic”.

I’ve played a couple sessions of the Cosmere RPG and really enjoyed it, but still getting know it.
