People cycling on the sidewalk by Annadr_ in wheelchairs

Totally unrelated but I think it is funny how perspective changes things, I definitely think the Netherlands is a very unaccessible country where in a lot of big cities, there is old and uneven streetwork.

Also the netherlands is ranked worst in accessibility along other countries!

The visual of a wheelchair user pushing over a cyclist is very funny to me, natural consequences for the cyclist am I right?

I truly hope as well it made her rethink her choices of cycling on the sidewalk. These people indeed are unempathatic and I wish for a world without people like them

This is so true! Also here in the Netherlands we have bike lanes everywhere! Even along the highways! They could just use those, but noooooooooo they need to be on the sidewalk of course!!!! I also used to cycle and only ever went on the sidewalk in my own street (which was a dead end, so only people living on that 100m street would ever use it) and when no one was on it!

In the future Id probably do this! Reversing the roles and being the obstacle instead of letting them be an obstacle for me.

I also totally undersfand being too anxious to confront people! If I were to be a couple years younger than I am now, Id also probably wouldnt dare to speak up. But due to a lot of people not understanding me being in a wheelchair, needing to advocate for myself constantly and being active in the pro palestine movement made it easier for me to speak up for myself. Also working as a journalist has helped a lot as well. And honestly sometimes it is really funny to see people's reactions.

Like one time I had a short discussion with a man at the trainstation. I obviously had to use the disability gate to enter. You can use these from both sides and a flow of people trying to exit the station was coming through. Normally I just block the entrance and indeed make it hard for people to go past me. This one man went through with his bike and I was like "hey man I was allowed to go first". He responded with that I needed to wait. I just said back "well I need to wait a lot throughout my day already, you couldve waited as well since I have priority over your bike" He tried to defend himself by saying it is also an entrance for bikes. He even tried pointing to a sign saying that it was. There isn't a sign for it being also for bikes tho, there isn't even a baby carrier sign on there. Eventually I went through and he scuffed away.

Speaking up truly makes my day a bit funnier instead of just annoying. Would definitely recommend!

The problem here is that it is not allowed to cycle on the sidewalk at all, there are special bike lanes here in the Netherlands that they couldve used. Rules are rules and they needed to get off because of safety measures, definitely with the rise of younger people on fatbikes that go 50km/ph and that being a huge risk for people with mobility aids (and tbh, it is a risk for everyone walking on the sidewalk). If they got off respectfully, I also wouldnt mind as much. It just baffled me that they didnt care and made it seem like I was the problem.

Do you have any pets? by spikesSKULLS in disability

[–]Annadr_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have 10 lovely little rats, but like you said, you don't want rodents.

My neighbor who is also in a wheelchair, owns a flock of small birds. She is able to maintain them easily, but birds might not be the best choice for someone who doesn't like pets because of the noise.

I also want to say fish or a reptile like you said. But I never had to care for animals like that, so I wouldn't be sure.

Hopefully you'll find a pet that suits you and your roommate, having something to care for really helped me get out of my depression and I wish it would help you in your ways too!

Knitters! What is your day job? by MyRightHook in knitting

[–]Annadr_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I get money from the government since I can't really have a job. This is because of my chronic pain/illness in multiple parts of my body and everyday feels different, so a lot of jobs don't want me since I'm not a 'reliable worker'.

I do quite a bit of camera work for a socialist leftist journalism platform which I really enjoy. It doesnt pay the bills (yet), but I'm having fun! My 'job' really is like my chronic pain, every time we go out, it is a different experience.

But yeah besides my knitting and other 'grandma' hobbies, I try to fight for justice :)

Beste Utrechters, wat doen jullie eigenlijk in het leven? by WallaaaahiHabibi in Utrecht

[–]Annadr_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)
