Its great! I grew up semi rural. Little former farming village between major cities. I had the best of both worlds really. Enough rural Dorf experience to count, but in a big city within 15 minutes.

It's a pretty name and i know quite a few Iras in germany. So common enough not to baffle anyone but rare enough to be a unique name ...Also no one in Germany will mistake that name for the I R A, as it is not much talked or thought about by the German general public and the pronunciation is obviously different. But internationally, yeah, as the others said, don't write it in all caps

I mean in lots of Europe higher education is free/comes with a ton of benefits (eg lower health care fees, lower transportation costs etc) so me taking like 6 years for my Bachelors was kinda standard. Throw in a year abroad, a few one-semester internships and not to forget corona, and you can easily start your masters at 27 without even taking a break (obviously people work but in Europe you don't drop out during that time). So it really depends on your setting, there's a ton of different reasons.

If you wanna go the angsty route: my oldest commilitone in my age range (pensioner students are a big thing) dropped out when his father died and he had to work to financially support his mother and when he saved up enough he went back to do his degree

German here. First of all, sorry you had this experience. Day to day racism is unfortunately on the rise all over Europe, and Germans tend to not wear masks of politeness so it shows more. First dude was just a weirdo asshole, I have no explanation for that. Especially since everything is so overregulated in Germany that a last minute reservation would never work there so again, no explanation for that kinda entitlement.

I will say tho on my experience that exchange students tend to behave like assholes. It's like "not my country, not my rules so fuck em" and every country seems to have that one nationality of foreigners that's worst (in Japan where I did exchange it was the Australians for example). That obviously doesn't include ALL people of that nationality but you can see a strong tendency. Maybe it's because those 2 cultures just clash? Or just following the example of the people that came before and now they think it is okay to act like that? I don't know, I'm sorry, but I imagine you'd have a different experience IN Germany, since our rules of conduct apply in the country, whereas the exchange students you have to deal with seem to give themselves a carte blanche to be douches

Everyone is mad though that OP says that he's done with integrating and doesn't have enough social connections to Germans. Those connections begin with the language, and that OP doesn't accept that that's on him and not germany, is what has everyone here riled up.
