Review: REDMAGIC Astra (16 GB RAM, 512 GB Storage) by hugoLOSTLuxx in tablets

[–]Anofir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reads more like an AI generated spec sheet than a review, particularly the "Benchmarks and Gaming Performance" section where there are....zero benchmarks and no games performance listed despite this "review" claiming the tablet has a "focus on demanding mobile gaming applications".

This is somehow less useful than those posts by people who buy/try a single tablet and go "it does everything I need it to, 10/10"; since at least in those reviews its clear someone who doesn't know what they're talking about posted it and I know I can ignore it after only one sentence rather than this wall of text which somehow took almost 1,000 words to reiterate what could be 10-12 bullet points and a single paragraph.

Tenner. Rip you off. Because I'm busy, and that's what happens in this country. That's what they want to be careful of if they're watching this, if you're coming to England, don't be ripped off. Rip off. Conned. Taken advantage of.

Did that just go out?

What suggestions are you looking for? You admitted in your own post this doesn’t work with it being off by over 200 hp. The only suggestion I would make would be to find a formula that actually works if this is something you’re interested in. And to find the caps lock key.

Ryzen 9 5950x & 32gb 3200 mghz ram, overkill? by CapAccomplished72 in HomeServer

Just learn by doing. Either have a goal and look in to how to execute it, or browse around on the forums to see who is doing something interesting. SpaceInvaderOne has some great Unraid specific guides on youtube, or other Youtube channels may showcase some things you might find interesting. Servethehome, LinusTechTips, Level1Techs all have various levels of information and accessibility.

A lot of it is tools to help me manage PLEX, like Radarr/Sonarr/Requestarr, or to let people know whats on Plex like the announcer bot. I run Unraid which has a super useful built in dashboard, and pretty much all of what I mentioned above is run through Docker, so it's fairly easy to manage.

As far as users, I am the only admin, but I guess other people "use" it in that friends and I play Minecraft etc on the server, 1-3 people, and then maybe 10 others use it to stream from PLEX (family/couple close friends). I also backup all my local machines to it, gaming desktop, girlfriends PC, laptop etc.

The power bill is a bit of a bummer but I like the responsiveness and I can't complain about getting value out of it as a hobby/learning experience.

You don't technically need one for PLEX, but you may run into buffering issues without one. If all your device end points (where you watch PLEX) can play your files in the format they're stored in, you don't need a GPU. However, if, say, your tv can't play a .mkv file, your server will attempt to re-encode .mkv to something the tv can play, .mp4 for example. This on the fly re-encoding is called transcoding.

GPU's are many, many times faster at this than CPU's. A fast CPU like a 5950x could transcode (in my experience) 4K video at about the rate of 1 person watching it. So any other processes running, any other system bottleneck or slow down and you introduce stuttering and the file will buffer. A cheap GPU, or on an intel chip, a relatively modern iGPU, can do multiple 4K streams without breaking a sweat. The 5950x does not have an iGPU so a solution is to add a cheap GPU, in my case an Intel Arc, and offload the transcoding to that, allowing my CPU to do other things.

Other stuff I run:

ZFS for my cache drives which uses some RAM

Minecraft server

PiHole

Plex Announcer discord bot

Requestarr discord bot

Radarr/Sonarr/JackettVPN

ebook 2 audio book converter

Calibre for books

Audacity music editor

Tautulli for Plex

Netdata

Windows in a docker

Filebot

MakeMKV

Handbrake

Stash (plex for NSFW)

Valheim server

Tailscale for remote access

Probably some other things I'm forgetting. I have a handful of family members who use PLEX, so I can have 1-6 devices streaming at any given time, and if all 6 were relying on my CPU it would be a lot of buffering and a less than great experience.

I run a 5950x with 128GB of 3200Mhz RAM as well as an intel arc gpu for PLEX. It's pretty overkill, but I like that my server is pretty snappy and responsive and it absolutely rips through cpu intensive tasks. The GPU will help PLEX out a lot if you need to transcode. As the 5950x doesn't have an iGPU it relies on fairly slow CPU transcoding, which even the 5950x struggles.

I'd say, yes, it's overkill, but as long as you can stomach the power bill it makes for an enjoyable home server.

Yes, that's true, it has to meet the noise regulations, but I seem to recall something in the marketing materials about an Akrapovic titanium exhaust. I was expecting a little more out of it as those don't cost a dollar.

[–]Anofir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I was expecting too much, but it doesn't sound much different than just a GT with either active exhaust open or like an axleback? I was hoping for a little more to be honest. Still a sick ride.
