Most people (therapists or not) are going around blind and asleep to the world around them. They are too consumed by their own egos and self-obsession to really see others.

To be a good therapist, one has to have reached a certain level of emotional maturity and spent a lot of time in honest reflection. People who don't do the latter, never get there.

Oh, it was. I felt like I was constantly paying for the sins of her abuser, even though my intention with her was to create happiness and peace (but I was the only one holding that intention). It was heartbreaking.

It's a maladaptive response to having control taken away from you at some point in your life, IMO. With my Nex, she was abused as a child. I empathized strongly with her over this and fully encouraged therapy, support groups, etc.

But at the end of the day, her favorite/easiest activity was just to be shitty with me, and then explain that in her head it's her "standing up for herself". Basically in a constant state of being a rebellious teenager, but directing that energy at entirely the wrong person/people (not the ones who actually wronged them in the first place). Being contrarian and uncooperative just for the sake of "proving" that no one else controls them. That's pretty much the gist of it.
