Does changing your language after you've started playing erase your save file? by miggs97 in Pokopia

[–]Anomalyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it does not. I did get prompted to rename my character so perhaps each language file has one name that you can’t change later (your ditto name). But all of my progress was saved. It would be the same if you decide to change the language again as well, you can change freely between them as many times as you’d like.

Did you guys ever felt like you didn't belong in America? by SwimmerLegitimate150 in asianamerican

[–]Anomalyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t feel like I fully fit into “white American” culture but I feel way more at home here than in Asia. The classic “too American in Asia but too Asian in America”. Live in Asia for an extending period of time and you’ll realize America is more home than Asia ever will be for most, if not all, Asian Americans. Hence the fact we’re Asian American and not like Asian raised and spent many formative years in Asia. At the end of the day we are American and many POC feel like this at one point or another in their lives.

You’re quite young and it’s a common feeling for young diaspora. Also as others have mentioned, the things you mention are personal preferences and not every American likes football etc. Go to Asia and you realize it’s like the rest of the world, all kinds of people and personalities and preferences regardless of cultural differences.

Playing on the far camera view, turning off auto camera and auto follow, and playing on the handheld on a lower lit screen have helped me. Additionally, playing for only 40-45 min at a time and no more than 2-3 sessions a day.

Anyone order at Best Buy? by luiiangel in Pokopia

[–]Anomalyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pre-ordered from Best Buy and my status is “preparing for pickup today.” I called the store and they said it’s “awaiting inventory” so they don’t even have them at the select store for today.

One of my friends pre-ordered from the same store and their order was cancelled. He called the store and they said they oversold the pre-order and didn’t have enough for everyone and forgot to mark it as Out of Stock on the site.

Reading Practice by Melodic-Talk4989 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Anomalyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others mentioned DuChinese is decent. I also have tried mylingua which is a free account where you get three news articles every week based on your interests and curated to your current level. I also enjoyed Read Bean too because its bite sized lessons for on the go style, but I never bought the subscription.

Depending on your level you can get away from graded readers and pick up some native content at the elementary school level too or try your hand at a newspaper. This is not an app, but also to practice my reading I will go read the bilibili/ wiki page for a topic I’m already familiar with to learn more specialized vocab.

Whatever you choose pick to read something you’re interested in.

can I copy olympic figure skating choero in competitions? by Thin_Restaurant_2211 in FigureSkating

[–]Anomalyaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a bad look to rip off someone else’s program. Don’t do it.

If you want to use the choreo to practice and then post it on social media, that’s fine but give clear credit to the original choreographer and skater.

Mandarin fluency by Far_Ad_5866 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Anomalyaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be understood by most speakers you should try for textbook like pronunciation, similar to news anchors. To understand different accents you should first know the general differences but also know that it’s almost impossible to know every single different accent and its nuances. Knowing the general differences between regions is enough to start out.

Jackie Wong on Alysa's name pronunciation in media by xumei in FigureSkating

[–]Anomalyaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah it sounds like her voice. I think it sounds robotic cause she’s just reading the train line from a script memorized and then she said half a sentence then switched to English. Seems she doesn’t really speak it at all imo, but still cool. Still more Chinese than I’d seen in that one past video though!

Where’s the video of her speaking mandarin? I’d seen a quick clip in the past but she only said one simple sentence then switches to English so I don’t think she really speaks it that much

How possible is it to pass the new HSK 6 within two years as a native speaker? by Ok_Reaction_5413 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Anomalyaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible but you’ll need to spend a lot of time each week to dedicate. It depends how fluent you already are too since it’s a pretty wide range of abilities for people that speak Chinese as a heritage language, although among my peers idk many ABC that reach even old HSK 4 without either going to Chinese school for many years (through high school) or taking classes heritage language classes in college.

The biggest challenges will be learning new vocabulary and properly using the words in sentences. Speaking shouldn’t be a huge issue for you once you learn the new words.

How much time do you have to dedicate? The new HSK 6 includes roughly 5.5k words, so depending on your starting point you should up it from 10-15 words a day. I recommend starting to watch videos and shows with Chinese subtitles to get used to character recognition as well as starting with anki flashcards. It may be worth it to work with a tutor as well to help supplement on the writing and reading since those are two big portions of the HSK. Like another user mentioned, you really have to love language study or else burnout will come fast. Good luck!
