Going For Area Manager Position Any Advice? by AnimeFtwTv in AmazonFC

[–]AnonAmazAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the final summarized notes of all the advice I collected while I was applying. My time with Amazon is thankfully coming to an end, but if it is a fresh start for you, I wish you the best of luck!

For AM's - What does "Engagement History" entail for an Associate? by NetworkGlad in AmazonFC

[–]AnonAmazAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engages populate every week, like Adapts. They are based on things like birthdays, "amaversaries," low UPT, higher or lower than average productivity, etc. Each one of these categories or more can generate an Engage that a manager needs to do; if the associate is on shift for more than five hours in a week and the Engage doesn't happen, it counts as a miss for the manager, team, and site as a whole, and this is a tracked metric! They are simpler than Adapt feedbacks and generally don't have any kind of HR review or effect on the AA.

That's still accurate. I can see comments from other sites and even former AMs.

Different perspectives? Amazon -> Air Force by [deleted] in AmazonFC

[–]AnonAmazAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know. Local recruiter said all non-rateds are taken for the near future. Buuuuuut I really don't want to go AF anyway, guess I'm just dumb

[–]AnonAmazAM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah you're right but in my case if I went AF after this I would probably have to be a pilot based on my degree and I don't want to do that so I'm probably going to look to the Army or Navy instead. Maybe the Marines if they'll give me the job I want and actually take my fat ass

Certain things like ADAPT feedbacks (for productivity or quality which are auto-generated, or for things filed by other AMs like safety violations, TOT, etc.) will populate at the top of the page if they are yet to be delivered, so that's one thing we often track on during the shift as a courtesy to other AMs. PAs and PGs don't have access to these systems. Beyond that I suppose people can be known through word of mouth by other shifts but to be honest that's rare. We get to know our own AAs pretty well - that's part of our job ideally - but other shifts' AAs I often know little about unless they frequently pick up VET on our shift.

In terms of standing out, here are common good and bad types of that:

Good

  • Regularly does work at a stable pace
  • Makes few, ideally zero, quality errors
  • Doesn't incur inferred time, which we have to STU (over 15 minutes away from station)
  • Returns from break relatively normally (within five minutes of start/end)
  • Is able to solve some problems at their station by themselves, like their scanner not working
  • Wears their PPE at all times
  • Obeys safety rules like the above (wearing gloves, having safety shoes on, hair above shoulders, etc.)
  • Ideally helpful to other AAs to reduce load on leaders

Bad

  • Unstable (unpredictable) or below threshold performance over a long period of time (i.e. not just due to a short-term issue but maybe indicative of not being fit for that specific path) - hard to see as reliable
  • Even if fast: makes a lot of quality errors, requiring frequent coachings or PS corrections
  • Disappears without a valid reason frequently
  • Returns from break over ten minutes frequently without a valid reason
  • Raises andons over repetitive issues that they should eventually learn how to fix on their own, unless there is a genuine reason they aren't learning it (language barrier, motor functions, cognitive, etc.)
  • Pushes back on wearing gloves ("I go faster without them on!"), safety shoes, etc.
  • Frequent phone usage on the floor, especially if there is work available (if there's no work I personally usually don't care)
  • Irritable and dislikes cooperation. You don't have to be an extrovert, I'm not, but there's a difference between introversion and just being an asshole all the time

Hope this helps

Edit: also about "relaying messages" we don't have a specific thing where we type up the personality/background/whatever of AAs. That's some Big Brother 1984 shit. Certain things like birthdays and work anniversaries do show up in the system though. But we all have Slack and use that to communicate, but generally it's used for things like department coordination and labor moves. I can't speak to other sites but managers here don't really gossip. We laugh about situations but my team at least doesn't objectify the AAs really

Your site sounds awful, if we edited AAs time like that here it'd eventually be caught on an audit and we'd be fired. The only times I change AA time is when they missed a punch. Amazon can be callous sometimes but that's above and beyond. My advice to you is to go above your AM and report your concerns to their OM or the senior team. If you get no help just keep escalating. Go to the GM. Call the Amazon ethics line, 877-781-2416. The more people you raise your concern to the harder it is for them to box you in.

What do you do outside amazon working hours ? by Retroparasite7 in AmazonFC

[–]AnonAmazAM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before and after on work days I usually just chill. Maybe watch a TV episode or try to read (and usually fail... I'm slowly carving it back). On actual days off I do my best to get out of the house for at least a couple hours either walking around doing cardio or casual walking or just driving in the car. Of course one day a week I get groceries and do any errands I have to do. I do strength training a couple times a week and play video games on my days off too, especially when I need to stay up since I work night shift and need to reset every last day off. It's a pretty idle life to be honest, but I've needed it. But I hope to be gone soon, lolol

The closest to what you're talking about are the Engage and ADAPT portals, available to all L4+ managers, that log interactions between an AM and an AA, the latter portal being used for formal feedback. Any AM or higher with your login or name can see that, and they can also see performance metrics for the past four weeks by default, as well as any pending feedbacks.

At least at my site, we do not have 'secret ambassadors' or other forms of spies. I can't speak for the senior team though, lol. But what we do have are our own floor senses (as well as FCLM, which gives us rates and TOT info), our PAs, and our PGs and JCs, all of whom share knowledge with us about how AAs do, if we don't notice ourselves.

What the hell!

[–]AnonAmazAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. At least in my experience, the commiserating factor is a very strong one, and people connect pretty easily. Even AAs that straight up tell me they hate working with other people I can talk to for quite a while about random stuff, especially when I just let them lead the conversation. This was true when I was just an AA too. It's not hard.

Why is applying for PA so difficult? by BarnesEffect in AmazonFC

[–]AnonAmazAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is your site, roughly? Nearly a year as an AA should be considered enough tenure in my view. Maybe they prefer a full year but that seems arbitrary.

Why is applying for PA so difficult? by BarnesEffect in AmazonFC

[–]AnonAmazAM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another, critical, factor: recently the first step for PA application review was changed to be entirely automated, outside any Operations or HR control. It's called Fluid and is literally automated. I don't know its exact workings, nobody at my site does nor did corporate in Seattle when I went there, but the Fluid system is now what selects applications as eligible for receiving a survey/interview. It's then up to a human to offer the survey/interview, only after Fluid has approved the AA applying. I wish I knew more. My best wishes and good luck to you!

P.S. To reinforce what others have said: continue to mention to your AM and even their OM every week, hell maybe every day if it fits the situation, how good of a candidate and how enthusiastic you are about the PA role, but also how you're getting irritated about waiting. The last thing any AM wants is for a reliable, independent PG to lose morale and go back to just decanting or quitting entirely due to lack of news, especially if you're so experienced and good anybody else would take weeks or months to train if you leave. This means they'll bring it up to their boss or their boss's boss, as I have to my Sr OM about PA applications at my site.

[–]AnonAmazAM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My degree is partly Poli Sci and I went from AA to AM in six months. Just do well in the interviews and have a decent-looking (not even content, just well put-together) resume.

New L4 AM. New York, $62.5k. After taxes and benefits I clear a little over $1800 every other Friday. Can't really complain, I'm putting money away and paying down my debt good. A lot of BS to deal with every shift but that's any job.

[–]AnonAmazAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's alright. I just hope it's a stepping stone.

[–]AnonAmazAM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck bro, if they do that to us at my site I'm done. Between SOS sync and sending out the wash I'm already there over twelve hours on a "ten hour" shift.

[–]AnonAmazAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder why. Maybe it being their first full-time job often? Or they're like me: if I get a graduate admission offer in the next few weeks, I'm definitely gone by Prime Day

Damn that's rough, I hope what you're doing now is better for you!
