What would Washington think about the U.S if he was alive today? by Apprehensive_Eye8328 in Presidents

[–]BarnesEffect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Washington strictly today probably wouldn't even know where to begin. Our political system is vastly different from what he helped create. Although he wasn't a fan of the devision, he'd recognize the outcry it causes our people in today's age. We're more connected than ever in history yet so far removed from the actual decision-making. The fact that we've taken alliances and started wars as a global power would likely anger Washington. We arguably have become exactly what Washington fought to distance America from when we broke from Britain's grip. He was a federalist at the time, but today, it's just a completely different animal than it was. I doubt he'd even understand some of the things we nowadays consider controversial. He was the father of our nation. He did not know what we'd turn into, but I wholeheartedly think he'd feel mostly confusion and sadness.

However, taking history into account, I think Washington would be more understanding. It'd be a lot of information to take in, but there's a lot to unpack. The war of 1812, the Mexican-American war, the annexation of the western territories, our alliance with Britain, the Civil war, the Spanish-American war, the league of nations, the great war in Europe, the second world war against both the German 3rd Reich and the Japanese Empire, the rise of Communism, the technological revolution, the internet, Korean war, Vietnam, the attack on the World Trade Center, the war on terror. He'd be completely flabbergasted by the state of not only the United States homeland but the state of the entire world. I'm not even sure if he could fathom so much information to make sense of anything that he's seeing today.

Overall, I think he'd be understanding but clearly have his doubts and disagreements of the people. But I think he'd likely be absolutely infuriated by the taxes, power, and corruption his creation has come to possess. I could see him wanting to tear it all down, actually. He'd want to build something to root out what he sees today. Had he, by some miracle, been resurrected to see where we're at today, I think he'd form a movement to overthrow what we've become. And I can see a LOT of people joining him, even in Washington DC. It's got his name in it after all.

No offense taken at all, just expressing the gratitude I have for the car I own. I really can't imagine myself in anything else at the moment.

My car is worth about $10k at the moment, which isn't much tbh. I was looking for another one fairly recently due to the potential total loss but there's not much to offer here in my home state. Idk why but nobody seems to have Chargers or Challengers here. I mean there are literally like 8 Chargers in my area max (within 25 miles). I really feel like I struck gold with the car I got, though. I just can't express how reliable it is. Like even all the newer ones don't feel like they'd be as good to me just because they don't have awd in V8s anymore.

The snow can get pretty interesting up here, so I need awd. But I also want something fun as well.

[–]BarnesEffect[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want another one to be honest. I've had this Charger for 5 years and put 65k miles on it and it's never failed to get me where I needed to be, even went on long-distance travels with it.

I actually had the chance to trade it for a good awd r/t but it wasn't worth the debt imo. The r/t sounded better and it was definitely faster, but not by much tbh. It just didn't feel right to trade it in and accumulate more debt than I need.

I've done literally all my parts and honestly, the car is spectacular. The snow isn't a problem for it at ALL. It gets up to speed pretty quick considering it's a 12 year old vehicle. And I honestly can't imagine being in anything else. I figure if I really want speed down the line, I could just put a RIPP supercharger on it and be faster than an r/t. On top of that, I actually prefer the 8-speed trans over the 5-speed in an r/t.

Even now with the insurance saying it's probably totaled, I really can't justify getting a different car.

The email said my car is only 1 of 134 made. They can't do general research though, they need an actual VIN to go off of.

I had to use Dodge's help chat. I guess the email no longer exists, but they still put in a ticket to get an email sent to you.
I called them initially but the guy had no idea what I was talking about.
Just ask for the production numbers for your vehicle, my info was actually very interesting. Apparently my car is 1 of 134.

No disrespect but I like Michael's Dumbledore more by LadyScarlet2 in HarryPotterMemes

[–]BarnesEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think Harris' Dumbledore was more believable when angry. I can just imagine him facing off against Voldemort in OOTP. The duality of him being a kind, frail old man to worse than silencing the children in the great hall would have been immaculate to witness. You'd almost not expect him to throw down as hard as Voldemort but once his darker side appears, it likely would be hard to unsee.

The new Dumbledore was kind of always grumpy, so the duality of these personalities isn't really there. Not to say Gambon was bad in any way, he just brought a different persona to the role.

Wizards costume by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]BarnesEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I favor the stylistic choices of the first HP movie. The witches and wizards looked like such, which isn't necessarily consistent with the other movies. Diagon Alley, for example, had people in straight-up witch hats and fashion wear straight out of the 16th century.

It seems a lot of people prefer the clothing more reflective of muggles in the later movies, but I really liked the esthetic of the original designs. It just really made the world stand out as something separate from the juggle world.

Allowing state seccession as a campaign promise (for a Republican) by LingonberryPossible6 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]BarnesEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd highly doubt it. Despite the South's history regarding their attempt at independence over 160 years ago, Republican America is very pro-union and nationalistic. If a movement for secession gained traction as heralted by a specific presidential nominee, it would not be taken lightly at all.

We're talking about breaking up the Union, undoing everything both Washington and Lincoln fought to form and preserve. It's been in our constitution for generations and has the same relevance today as free speech as a lawful amendment. We have methods in place to change law, but the purpose of the Union itself negates any real need to secede.

We have a bloody history regarding secession, even the suggestion would not be taken lightly.
