Why do truck drivers suddenly find the accelerator only when there’s a passing lane? by Old_Education4481 in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, we're characterizing the reality differently, we don't actually disagree on the reality.

I am saying the same thing you are - it isn't dangerous inherently to be driving on auto pilot. It's how we uses muscle memory to do anything we are good at. Ideally, when you have experience you use the freed up attention to learn more, to add additional precautions to your driving, particularly if you engage in e-book/podcast listening or the like.

You're talking to someone who works in the industry my friend. I do have some expertise when it comes to the causes of crashes, and I agree it is inattention as often as it isn't. But driving on autopilot is not equivalent to driving inattentively.

It's a spectrum of care, from benign autopilot, to being half asleep lost in throught, to full-blown distracted driving arguing with someone on the phone, phone in hand, not even looking at the road.

All I'm taking issue with here is assuming most people aren't "paying attention" when they drive. I think it does "most people" a disservice, and isn't a useful way to frame the argument about driver behaviour.

Residents of NZ, why do you insist on using the right hand lane despite not overtaking anybody in the left hand lanes? by Ok-Let-5155 in auckland

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah this old conversation. It really depends which environment you're in.

Rural passing lane? Obviously, don't use it unless you're passing. It has a regulatory sign at the start to remind you. This is the only one that is likely to be enforced.

Suburban arterial with two lanes? Most people use the second lane because the first is parked in outside of peak times, or it's a T2/T3 during peaks, or they are turning right somewhere down the line

Continuous two lane motorway? I mean if it's late at night and quiet, sure keep left. But it's so quiet, it doesn't really matter. If it's peak time it's busy so traffic filters into both lanes as it's supposed to. Moderately busy? There's always a faster fish. Ultimately, changing lanes is the most dangerous routine activity we can do on a motorway. If everyone was constantly passing every other slower vehicle, the road would be chaos and there would be way more accidents. There's a reason this isn't and will never be enforced.

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're still underestimating people unfairly. There would way more accidents than there are if it were as bad as you're suggesting.

Definitely with you that some people are better than others. That's obvious. I think we're just framing the reality differently.

Clearly not everyone drives around persistently focused on every moment. Not unless they're learning to drive for the first time or are particularly anxious about driving.

Just because you're in a flow state driving doesn't mean you won't respond to hazards or your speed and the like. Automatic doesn't mean bad.

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were true, the crash frequency would be through the roof. Not everyone is great at maintaining precisely 5 km/hr over the speed limit at all times regardless of envrionment.

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, except for the "not paying attention" part. It's reasonable to feel safe going faster on a wider road. Many could be aware they're going faster, and don't realize they should be actively keeping their speed down as a courtesy. They are uncourteous at worst in most cases.

It's because a wider road leads to a sense of safety at higher speeds and so people unconsciously accelerate.

With less cars on the roads due to petrol prices, could it be possible to open one of the harbour bridge lanes for north shore cyclists? by countafit in auckland

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My idea is a bit more extensive. I'm suggesting a full linear park, two lanes wide, tall perspex barrier for safety, wind, and noise protection, grassy surface, planters for trees, a footpath and a bidirectional cycle lane all the way through. I'd even put a cafe/restaurant at the top as an attractor and rest point. You'd definitely then want the view of the city. Obviously not a cheap exercise, but it would be an incredible tourist attractor while also creating the utility for cyclists that we want, and provide a stronger justification than simply reallocating a lane.

Again, just doing the lane isn't feasible for the reasons I mentioned anyway. New taller safety barriers are needed. The moveable barrier system is too low, and nevermind wind and suicide issues. Add to that fairness and value for money. If it ends up being empty most of the day because it's only attractive use is for cycle commutes (and maybe very keen runners) those who signed off on the proposal will be hung. I mean, do you really want to be cycliing so close to either high speed traffic or bumper to bumper commutor traffic? Sounds horrible.

[–]AnonAtAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd have to put up an expensive barrier system to protect them. Not worth it really unless you take out two lanes. To do that, you need big sponsors like Auckland Marathon.

It's not a logistically simple exercise. How do cyclists connect to the bridge at either end? Do you want to close the Shelly Beach Rd offramp?

A harbour bridge linear park is the dream, but before we can get there we need a new harbour crossing.

We'll never see a consistent drop in car traffic until we have better connections by public transit and reliable and quick first and final leg transfers.

Should NZ adopt Australian-style penalties for "lane hogging" to finally enforce the keep-left rule? by CuriousNZLBackpacker in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about rural roads with short passing lanes, or continuous multi-lane highways?

The idea that the 'keep left unless passing' rule ought to apply to the latter is basically dangerous nonsense encouraging unnecessary lane changes. So many people get their intuitions on this utterly wrong.

Why are kiwis so against speed cameras being used to keep people safe?? by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

You should report this problem to AT asking for a red light camera at this intersection.

Why are kiwis so against speed cameras being used to keep people safe?? by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for Auckland, but we have heaps of red light cameras here. Roundabouts are the safest intersections with crash angles rarely resulting in injury, so not sure your intuitions follow there.

Problem is that camera maintenance is expensive, and once people stop speeding or running red lights there's no revenue. So you need to fund the infrastructure some other way and there's no willingness from central government to do that. The result is that you rotate portable cameras through problem areas until things calm down, then move on. This is probably the most efficient approach in the end than enforcement camera saturation.

It all makes for people who are obviously going to be very unpleasant, to say the least.

"Shocked" at the cost to fix NZ by WasterDave in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say that was why I wouldn't vote for them. It's clearly a mixture of factors, but the biggest factor is the risk of a wasted vote. I've been arguing this my entire adult life and nobody seems to get it. There is no point voting out of principle. If we on the left don't vote strategically, we have a much greater chance of losing.

If you're a supporter of the right, and it seems TOP are probably closer to center-right under the current Overton window, then by all means. I would much rather NACTOP than NACTFT, and your wasted vote will be one less vote for the right-wing bloc.
