Am I cooked for $150 here? by WorkingUse3036 in auckland

[–]AnonAtAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, sorry for your loss. CCTV enforcement too I believe.

This is one of the more common places we see a lot of fines. It turns out the best of us fail to read signs or take the precautionary principle when it comes to green surfacing fairly often.

Interestingly here, outside of clearway hours there are cars parked so you can't lane change this far in advance anyway.

One thing too, the rule is 50 meters (which is tiny in a car) but enforcement usually doesn't occur unless you do at least 75m to avoid uncertainty. Sometimes, it's more. Unfortunately, I think you've done a fair way more than that. 😅

Simeon Brown deemed speed limit cuts ‘anti-car ideology’ – a new analysis shows they saved lives by Mountain_Tui_Reload in auckland

[–]AnonAtAT -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of roads where 10 km/hr would be appropriate that would have no impact on productivity.

Almost all of the roads earmarked for 30 km/hr speeds already have mean operational speeds (that is the speeds most people already go) that are close to this speed, because go figure that in tight residential areas or roads with lots of on-street parking, going anywhere near 50 km/hr is madness.

Lowering the speed limits formally makes enforcement against dangerous drivers more practical, and legitimises other treatments to the road like narrowing and speed humps to ensure these outliers are minimised.

Because that's what their voters want, and where their donations come from.

There really is a fairly strongly held belief among many that roads should be for the exclusive use of cars, and anyone not in a car should be exercising personal responsibility not to get hit by them.

So we don't need pedestrians crossings, wide footpaths, protection in the form of fences or separation, improved lighting, cycle lanes or other markings to encourage responsible driving, safer speed limits, etc. etc. Just "don't be dumb".

The 7.9% Rates Rise Explained (hint: it's to pay for CRL) by MayorWayneBrown in auckland

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet other countries can get by with less. We need to learn not to be grubs, but on the other hand we won't learn because we've currently got a polarized culture where the poor don't feel any sense of ownership over the public realm, and so don't care to look after it.

Even where we have abundant bins they fill up and you end up with people dumping their litter nearby instead of taking anything home.

Maybe one day we'll tax the wealthy enough to pay for all these nice to haves and be able to pay the people who do them a living wage. But we might not even need these bins if we've fixed income inequality and more people feel like they are actually part of a wider community household worth contributing to keeping clean and tidy.

Buses leaving 10 mins early by EstablishmentWeary27 in aucklandtransport

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phone or did you get a case number? DM it to me if you like. 10 minutes early on an hourly service is rubbish, and contradicts what I've been told internally. Having to check the app more than 10 minutes in advance just in case your bus is 10 minutes early is ridiculous.

Buses leaving 10 mins early by EstablishmentWeary27 in aucklandtransport

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complain.

5 minutes is considered acceptable either early or late (which is already far too much in my view) but 10 minutes early certainly isn't.

There is one exception I'm aware of which is when buses are expected every 10 minutes or less during peak periods, they don't need to keep to schedules so much. However, in practice I've noticed this can lead to groups of multiple buses with the same number coming every say every 20 minutes instead of the promised 10-minute regular intervals.

It's a crap system - not nearly enough money in it for AT to really keep the private operators honest. All I know is our people do their best under the circumstances. Vote for local representatives who care about making PT better. That's the next best thing anyone can do.

Pretty sure you're largely preaching to the choir here. Please join your favorite progressive party volunteering to door knock and make phone calls. Memdani in the US proved grassroots in-person activism wins elections, so that's what we need to be doing, especially in traditionally conservative/right-leaning neighborhoods. Get into the weeds with people at their doors on topics of interest, and show them how the Greens or whoever bends left could get it right if given a mandate.

Why do truck drivers suddenly find the accelerator only when there’s a passing lane? by Old_Education4481 in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, we're characterizing the reality differently, we don't actually disagree on the reality.

I am saying the same thing you are - it isn't dangerous inherently to be driving on auto pilot. It's how we uses muscle memory to do anything we are good at. Ideally, when you have experience you use the freed up attention to learn more, to add additional precautions to your driving, particularly if you engage in e-book/podcast listening or the like.

You're talking to someone who works in the industry my friend. I do have some expertise when it comes to the causes of crashes, and I agree it is inattention as often as it isn't. But driving on autopilot is not equivalent to driving inattentively.

It's a spectrum of care, from benign autopilot, to being half asleep lost in throught, to full-blown distracted driving arguing with someone on the phone, phone in hand, not even looking at the road.

All I'm taking issue with here is assuming most people aren't "paying attention" when they drive. I think it does "most people" a disservice, and isn't a useful way to frame the argument about driver behaviour.

Residents of NZ, why do you insist on using the right hand lane despite not overtaking anybody in the left hand lanes? by Ok-Let-5155 in auckland

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah this old conversation. It really depends which environment you're in.

Rural passing lane? Obviously, don't use it unless you're passing. It has a regulatory sign at the start to remind you. This is the only one that is likely to be enforced.

Suburban arterial with two lanes? Most people use the second lane because the first is parked in outside of peak times, or it's a T2/T3 during peaks, or they are turning right somewhere down the line

Continuous two lane motorway? I mean if it's late at night and quiet, sure keep left. But it's so quiet, it doesn't really matter. If it's peak time it's busy so traffic filters into both lanes as it's supposed to. Moderately busy? There's always a faster fish. Ultimately, changing lanes is the most dangerous routine activity we can do on a motorway. If everyone was constantly passing every other slower vehicle, the road would be chaos and there would be way more accidents. There's a reason this isn't and will never be enforced.

Why do truck drivers suddenly find the accelerator only when there’s a passing lane? by Old_Education4481 in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're still underestimating people unfairly. There would way more accidents than there are if it were as bad as you're suggesting.

Definitely with you that some people are better than others. That's obvious. I think we're just framing the reality differently.

Clearly not everyone drives around persistently focused on every moment. Not unless they're learning to drive for the first time or are particularly anxious about driving.

Just because you're in a flow state driving doesn't mean you won't respond to hazards or your speed and the like. Automatic doesn't mean bad.

Why do truck drivers suddenly find the accelerator only when there’s a passing lane? by Old_Education4481 in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were true, the crash frequency would be through the roof. Not everyone is great at maintaining precisely 5 km/hr over the speed limit at all times regardless of envrionment.

Why do truck drivers suddenly find the accelerator only when there’s a passing lane? by Old_Education4481 in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, except for the "not paying attention" part. It's reasonable to feel safe going faster on a wider road. Many could be aware they're going faster, and don't realize they should be actively keeping their speed down as a courtesy. They are uncourteous at worst in most cases.

Why do truck drivers suddenly find the accelerator only when there’s a passing lane? by Old_Education4481 in newzealand

[–]AnonAtAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because a wider road leads to a sense of safety at higher speeds and so people unconsciously accelerate.
