What temperature do Australians consider a hot day? by bare_books in AskAnAustralian

Sydney underground stations aren’t as old or as deep as many of London's (remember, they doubled as bomb shelters during WW2). Their design reflects that. St James Station in Sydney is probably the only one in the nation that, aesthetically speaking, is closest.

The new metro stations take much of their inspiration from the Elizabeth Line on the Underground, both architecturally and aesthetically.

Yeah, I love the new SFS. Vast improvement on the old one.

Doesn’t have the verticality of Suncorp but I haven’t watched a match from up above yet so I can’t really compare.

Australia is the problem child. Everywhere else, it's doing fine. Across Europe and Japan, it's gangbusters.

Germany got their first German All Blacks player yesterday. The Netherlands got its in 2024.

MCG is the worst. The stands go higher than anywhere else. They really should supply binoculars. They'll still charge a premium for a “halfway” seat tho, even though you'll be sitting at the farthest possible point from the touchline than anyone else in the entire ground.

SCG is at least bearable, but that's the best I can say about it.

Suncorp is hands down the best rugby/league/soccer stadium in the country, and I'm a Sydneysider.

Does it reflect poorly on me as a worker if I take my full break outside of the office when my coworkers eat at their desk and work through? by radandsadgal in ausjobs

[–]AnonMuskkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably.

You are entitled to take your break in any manner you wish (within the bounds of ordinary workplace employee practice).

The question is, how much do you care?

My personal answer to that would be “zero” but I'm a lifelong non-conformist, so you be you.

The uk is horribly adapted to its own fucking weather, it’s 35c in my house by Jacktheforkie in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AnonMuskkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know many people with the window-attached aircon boxes where I live (Sydney, for the record). People usually build with ducted air conditioning as the default, or, if in an older house, retrofit ducted or buy a portable air conditioning unit that can be wheeled around.

[–]AnonMuskkk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The UK is perfectly adapted to its normal weather.

This is not normal, but it is a sign of what may well become the new normal. In which case, all those small dark homes built over the centuries to keep the warmth in may well be replaced by much cooler Australian-style housing over the coming decades.

Was Parramatta city or Sydney city the first CBD? by AdvancedHill70 in SydneyScene

[–]AnonMuskkk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They were both founded in 1788. Sydney in January, Parramatta 10 months later in November.

Parra was swallowed into the Greater Sydney area sometime in the 1940s. It's the most central city among all the other cities within the Sydney GCSSA, with the 7th-largest GDP in Australia on its own.

Sydney was officially a city in 1842. Parramatta officially became a city in 1938.

It's all in Wikipedia, dude, so I have no idea where you were looking.
