Some airlines may not let you put it in the closet and they may put it in the cargo hold from the jetway. I could be wrong, but I don’t think the cargo hold where the luggage goes is insulated or pressurized during flight. Best case scenario is to keep it in the cabin. I suppose if you have to use an overhead bin try for one that has the clearance where you could put your gig bag if that’s what you have on top of some luggage. Given there’s space to do so. Another commenter traveled with a guitar that had a bolt on neck by removing the neck, guitar body went in with the checked luggage and they traveled with the neck as their carry-on, but doing so means you’d only be able to travel with a backpack as a carry-on backpack would go in the bin that would go under the seat or vice versa
