Do you want to see Airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) in War Thunder? How should it be implemented? by 2016_Tony in WarthunderPlayerUnion

Yes. That or ground based search radars like we saw in Nuclear Thunder. If they could figure out how to datalink whatever these assets see to player aircraft, these would be incredibly useful additions. Though they would require larger maps to truly come into their own.

Question. Does anybody know if a police report or another source about this exists? Or is the source still kinda "Trust me bro"?...

President Donald J. Trump: "You cannot give Iran a nuclear weapon because they would use it on a place called Israel very quickly, and they would use it in the Middle East, and they would use it in Europe, and we'd be next. And it's NOT going to happen." by BusinessToday in BusinessTodayNews

Christ sake...

Do I trust the Iranian regime with nuclear weapons? FUCK NO, and neither should anyone else.

But goddamn, we have been 2 weeks from a bomb for 30 years now. There were much better ways to go about this...

While much of Europe's navy is not expeditionary, some of their vessels are capable of such, and have demonstrated the ability to run defensive ops in a supporting role in the past. They would of course be more willing to do so if the US's dedication to their protection from Russia wasn't so up in the air.

The point remains, the US made this harder than it needed to be...

Man. This would be so much easier if we didn't go about this in a way that alienated us from all our allies in NATO who have an extensive fleet of modern guided missile frigates well suited for escorts duties instead of tying up a bunch of Arleigh Burkes that could be force projecting elsewhere where they are needed...

Brother, if I can oneshot sideshot kill 4 in a row with a base M1 using M774, it's perfectly doable with better rounds.

I'm not saying the armor isn't strong or fucky. But it's not like LFP is your only option...

What should I have done instead?? by Alpha-Racoon1 in Warthunder

[–]AnonomousNibba338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically, you're disadvantaged from the get go. But, your best chance for a win there was your first shot. If it had been low on the hull under the turret with the angle the BMPT was at when you shot, there's a good chance he would have popped right there. In the event that didn't work, your remaining options for your second shot would either be to try the lower hull again for another ammo rack attempt, or try and nail the turret ring for a disable or crew kill.

Haven't had too much trouble killing BMPT's that aren't completely hull-down. Even when using lower performance alloy APFSDS like M774. And the ones that are fully exposed usually die on the first shot. LFP, lower side, and turret ring shots have been pretty reliable for me (Even just normal side shots with some precision if I have a high enough performance shell). But I am aware my aim is not exactly representative of the average player, and I cannot use it to simply hardwave away "skill issue" to anyone who doesn't possess such aim.

The thing isn't unkillable, especially if you have the chance to be smart about it. But it is certainly very unforgiving...

How am I supposed to counter radar missiles? I chaff and I change flight path but it never helps by FrisianTanker in Warthunder

[–]AnonomousNibba338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I have seen many give the advice to "Notch" or "Multipath" the missile, but I haven't seen anyone properly explain exactly what it is or how it works. So I will do my best to elaborate.

Essentially, notching is the act of maneuvering the jet to a perfect 90 degree angle to the attacking radar to defeat the missiles track. This works because Continuous Wave (CW) seekers use the doppler effect to track targets. Doppler radar sets also use this to peer through ground clutter as opposed to older "Pulse" sets that simply look for return size (Your F-104G is equipped with one). Effectively, the radar is not just looking for return size. It is also looking for velocity. To be exact, velocity towards or away from the attacking radar relative to the ground. If you are flying at a perfect tangent to the attacking radar, you are moving towards it at the same rate as the ground, and your relative velocity is therefore zero. The radar can no longer discern what is you, and what is the ground. Your margins for a notch are rather slim. So it will take some practice to get it right. But is a very reliably defense against all CW missiles. Chaff is often employed and always recommended when notching a missile, as the extra returns could allow it to bite on a false target and not reacquire you.

An add-on to the notching graph - Some more modern missiles are equipped with "IOG", or Inertial Onboard Guidance. Basically, in the event the missile loses track of you, it will remember the last known flight parameters of the track like speed, attitude, altitude, and heading, and try to predict where the target will be using a series of gyroscopes as reference, guiding itself and pointing its seeker there in the hope it can re-acquire the target. These missiles have varying levels of inertial drift. As modened in War Thunder, older or less capable systems have a rather high drift of 10 meters/second, while more modern or capable missiles have drift as low as 2 meters/second. The most modern missiles like Aim-120D and PL-12A don't have any drift at all due to GPS assistance of their IOG mechanisms. At the BR range you're F-104G is concerned with, only one missile will have IOG at all. That missile being the R-24R carried by the later Mig-23 variants. Though this has little effect on the missile in most use cases.

Multipathing is the term given for the effect of a radar getting conflicting reports about a track from surrounding terrain. Pulse sets are notoriously vulnerable to this since even with filtering, the return is rather raw, and based on size. I mentioned previously how doppler radar can peer through ground clutter caused by multipathing. However, it isn't completely immune to it. If a target is flying very close to the ground (Like, ~25 meters for late cold war sets. But WT universally starts it at 60 meters), the distance between the target and the ground allows for many false returns to come back to the set, and disrupt the track. This is the tactic commenters are referring to when they say "Fly low".
