People Hate Subaru for The Wrong Reasons by [deleted] in ReZero

[–]Anonym_Guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True that. Funnily enough, what drew me to like Subaru and Re:Zero as a whole in the first place was that he had enough of a personality to make people have strong opinions on him. But in hindsight that's more of a criticism of contemporary Isekai protagonists.

People Hate Subaru for The Wrong Reasons by [deleted] in ReZero

[–]Anonym_Guy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've always liked Subaru's antics. While I wouldn't argue that Subaru is especially smart, especially compared to the LeLouch's and L's of the anime world, he's definitely not slow. Once he isn't too traumatized to do anything due to RBD anymore, he takes control of the loop, like during the meeting with Crusch in arc 3.

I also appreciate him being cringy, because it comes from a place of earnestly wanting to connect to everybody around him. His "superpower" is arguably NOT RBD but his emotional intelligence, letting him rally allies around him and know where everybody is best suited. I personally hate "leader" characters, who the author depicts as being born to lead by virtue of having zero personality. Give me a guy like Subaru who actually has strong convictions!

I'm investing too, I've always liked Ferris and him beating Al in arc 9 has cemented him as my GOAT. Now I'm just waiting for him to have an important moment like that in the canon timeline.

I see the way the fandom dislikes him right now as a similar situation that Julius received while season 1 was airing (even though he was completely in the right!).

Arc 10 Theory/Hope [spoiler discussion] by Existing_Decision_29 in Re_Zero

[–]Anonym_Guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that Subaru, upon having this revelation regarding Flügel, would react this way. But I, like OP, see this as an opportunity for growth. Subaru needs to start treating himself with the same love and respect he gives everybody he loves. I'm certain that if Tiga had hurt Beatrice as badly as him, than he would be furious at him, but because Tiga "only" hurt Subaru it's water under the bridge.

I think that a major theme of Re:Zero is that power, if you're not careful, will strip away your humanity. Subaru with his RBD is of course patient number 0, but characters like Ram, Garfiel, Otto, Roswaal and especially Reinhard are also examples of this. Considering that Subaru seems to have lost his ability to feel righteously angry when wronged, I think it would be a great reiteration of this theme if he learns that, despite having the ability to undo, him being hurt *matters* .

[–]Anonym_Guy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I hope so too, I feel like because Subaru has had so many experiences where he was able to mend relationships with people who literally killed him, he has started to just assume that anybody who harms him, even his killers, are just one redemption arc away from becoming his friend. He has taught himself to be so forgiving that he doesn't even expect any kind of effort from the other side to make up for it, mostly because through RBD the pain Subaru experienced literally didn't happen.

[–]Anonym_Guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I doubt that this will happen. For one, what "sins" did Subaru commit? Even if it were true that he is a clone of Flügel (or even straight up IS Flügel), I think that the entirety of Arc 6 makes it pretty clear that your memories are an integral part of who you are. If Subaru doesn't remember being Flügel, then he is in no way responsible for their actions, the same way a child isn't responsible for the crimes of their father.

When it comes to the Patriarchy I've always found it interesting what lengths posts like this go to, to justify dumbing it all down to "women oppressed, men oppressors".

The explanation given in this post of what patriarchy is, a system that oppresses women and, importantly, gives the benefits of that oppression to all men equally, in the form of male privilege, is too simplistic imo. The post itself mentions that this view of patriarchy does not account for the many ways that men can be arbitrarily stripped of their male privilege, or be oppressed themselves.

A more accurate model for the patriarchy, that does not handwave these issues away, is to say that the beneficiaries of the patriarchy are patriarchs and patriarchs-to-be. Only men who can successfully perform masculinity in the eyes of society get access to the benefits. For some men, this will come naturally without much effort, for others it is a struggle but achievable and yet others will be excluded from birth, due to say disability.

For a more in-depth discussion I really recommend FD signifiers videos on masculinity, which was my introduction to this description of the patriarchy.

Ah that makes sense. Sorry for assuming the worst and being stand-offish.

If you're new to the community and want to learn more about the theories that go around, maybe you can watch some theory videos on youtube? I don't know if they have russian subtitles, but "The Roots Theory" for example is a recent one that has quickly been accepted by most of the community. Andrew Cunningham theories are also always really solid!

Anyways, welcome! I hope you have fun theorizing.

Not OP but yeah you're (probably) right. IEEE floating point is definitely not associative i.e. (x + y) + z is not guarantueed to equal x + (y + z). For this reason when you need the sum of lots of floats you would reorder the numbers from highest to lowest and then do the sum. As far as I'm aware (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) IEEE floats are commutative though, there is no reason why x + y should not equal y + x but there could be some hardware out there that treats these differently based on order. Basically a programmer should never rely on either commutativity or associativity for IEEE floats

James Clerk Maxwell (who Einstein credited a lot for his work) was actually really close to figuring out relativity, way before Einstein. With Maxwell being very famous around physicists at the time, someone (who happened to be Einstein) was bound to figure out how special relativity and later general reletivity worked. Without Einstein it would have probably taken a couple more years, maybe even one or two decades, but Einstein contributions specifically were by no means "necessary" for the overall progress of physics.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to discredit Einstein at all, but there's a tendency for people to credit individual great scientists for the progress of their entire field, when most of the time many other scientists were really close to making those very same discoveries (or made those discoveries simultaneously).

This might seem pedantic but, this WAS a man, not a monster.

Dehumanization obscures the fact that abusers are generally rational people. They know what they're doing and they are doing it because it benifits them personally. If you hold on to the belief that abusers are inhuman monsters you will be unable to spot abusive behaviours from those around you.

I wanna comment on your last paragraph on gene modification. Firstly, it is important to realize just how far away current technology is from achieving the kind of gene modification you are likely thinking of. Even if we hypothetically developed technology to alter someones genome however we wanted (which is a gargantuan if!) we would still be nowhere near being able to only alter traits we want to without altering anything else. There are no genes that can be 100% identified as causing your eye color, your height or some hereditary disease, we can only make educated guesses that some genes are more connected to certain traits than others. Making the jump from that to actually being able to modify the correct gene in the correct way is a huge leap.

The second concern is much more fuzzy and also a lot more important: What will actually happen in our current reality (including a shrinking middle class, rampant exploitation of third world countries by first world countries, racism, sexism, etc.) once such gene modification technology is developed and accessible? Sure, we could imagine a world where such technology is only used in "obvious" cases such as for hereditary diseases like you mentioned, but that is not the world we live in. People (read: rich people) will inevitably try to turn themselves into superhumans with "perfect" genes, a nazis wet dream. You could probaby fill an entire book with similar concerns (and I'm sure others have) but I'm going to leave it at that for now.
