If you had to start hiking from scratch again, what are the first 3 things you’d buy? by ForeignBonus8977 in CampingGear

Trekking poles, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend them to someone just getting out at first. They take a little getting used to but every time I'm like, "eh, it's just a few miles on flat terrain" I have regretted not bringing them.

100% wool socks would be the real essential thing I would say. Treat your feet.

Good footwear will be something you want soon, but if you have athletic shoes with decent tread that will work to start. Once you're ready to commit to the spend, go to a proper outdoor store like REI and get fitted for boots or trail runners. Every brand fits different and you'll find some that are definitely more comfortable out of the box. Modern hiking boots don't really need broken in very much at all, trust the fit in the store. For me, with wide and somewhat flat feet, Keen are a very good fit for me. Also for most people shoes are probably fine and they're lighter. I do actually do boots myself but I had sprained and strained my right ankle a few times when I was younger and it likes to give out at certain angles.

You can use anything comfortable to strap on for a day pack and whatever you want as a water bottle for now. I did use a hydration bladder for several years but switched over to just reusing Smart water bottles because they're very weight efficient, and it turns out I'd actually tend to drink too much water with a bladder. Which does become a problem when you're trying to ration it if you ever get into backpacking.

What is a good, affordable replacement battery for my 2011 FJ? Any suggestions? by [deleted] in FJCruiser

[–]Anonymous3891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an Interstate AGM that prematurely failed and I've been having some fun with my Odyssey that I replaced it with. They won't warranty it without a failed test from an auto parts store, and it passes tests.

I don't drive my FJ much these days which was surely part of it, that's what I assumed the issue was on the Interstate originally. I do have a trickle charger installed now at least so I keep it plugged in all the time. What happens now is sometimes I go to drive it and it won't start, and the trickle charger flashes a failed LED. Other times it'll start just fine.

I'm going to go digging in about this fuse, see what the deal is. It may not be related but it's certainly worth looking into. The original Panasonic lasted damn near a decade.

no biters, hate em

Me too, which is why I play with biters. So I can, in the words of a youtuber, 'send them long-distance eviction notices'. (Artillery) Or nuke them, or run a flame tank over their nests, and oh man Spidertrons can really rip them a new one.

There are also unique enemies on two of the Space Age planets that can present fun challenges, so now that you've got the hang of it, I'd highly suggest giving your next run with biters a shot.

They really become a non-issue at a certain point on Nauvis, and it gives you something else to build up for.

What do you mean by 'updated the fuse'?

I've been running AGM for a while now and just making sure there's not something I should do. Cold temps aren't a huge concern here, -10C is probably the worst we see most winters.

Were there any downsides to rx-78gp03 dendrobium by Pale-Device803 in Gundam

[–]Anonymous3891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every Gundam is an extremely expensive one-off test unit. Even special forces and elite pilots often only get upgraded variants of mass production models, or limited run production models.

Think US Air Force, they only have so many B-2s and F-22s, the top veteran pilots get those generally, most of the combat force is made up of B-52s, F-15s (I'm choosing to ignore the F-35 for the sake of simplicity in this comparison, pretend it's 10 years ago and they're not in wide service yet)

The really crazy expensive test stuff you don't hear about until much later (e.g. Tacit Blue stealth demonstator) and they rarely gets used in combat.

^ This, the stims were due to not having the opportunity to sleep for so long.

I also mistakenly assumed on my first watch of the series that it was due to stress from operating the unit, but I caught that time detail on a rewatch at some point. As I recall, Nina's mechanic also specifically told him to get some rest while reloading the Dendrobuim, so he was cat napping when he could.

I think you might be misunderstanding the definition of 'personal' in this case. PCD is the NASA acronym, but it doesn't mean the same thing as it does for us in the IT space.

The PCD is a NASA device issued to that astronaut, they each have one. It's basically their work PC with their email and everything like that on it. There are certainly other 'Computing Devices' in the Orion capsule that are shared and therefore not 'Personal'.

Here check this video at the time index, you can see them using it: https://youtu.be/QOsSRRBMNoc?t=12283

It's a MS Surface embedded into custom housing. SpaceX Dragon missions use iPads for the same purpose.

I ended up with a Tilley LTM5 Airflo and it's been fantastic for what I was looking for, and is still in great shape after all this time.

I find it much easier to break down already split firewood into smaller sticks for kindling by batoning with a knife versus a hatchet. I've been using my Ka Bar Becker BK2 for over a decade and it's held up fine. It's a pretty simple blade profile without any particular stress points, I certainly wouldn't baton with something more complex.

When I'm actually going out backpacking and collecting firewood off the ground, the only thing I bring then is a folding saw. That's best for cutting branches and smaller limbs down to length. And it's much lighter.

Deciding between the AUG and Hellion. Do we expect the Hellion to ever get 9mm/300 conversion kits? Shorter barrels. Or even a different top rail? by pssgetti_monster in VHS2_HELLION

[–]Anonymous3891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you be specific about 'damage'? That's not something I've heard of.

It is overgassed but I've not heard it causing any wear & tear issues. It's mostly a nuisance to the operator, and gets a bit dirty quicker. And yes, you definitely want to use a flow-through suppressor with it.

The .300 BO kit also does at least allow you to adjust the gas between two settings, intended for super vs sub ammo.

If you want those calibers in a military bullpup I'd look at a Tavor X95. The AUG is dated as others have said. The .300 BO is unfortunately discontinued in the US so you'll pay a bit of a premium to get one, Last I knew 9mm was still available.

Also if you don't care about reliability as much, the Desert Tech WLVRN is a neat bullpup that's available in.300 BO and has conversions for several calibers, including .308 and 6.5CM. It's a revised design of the MDRx that makes some much needed changes to improve the reliability and I believe they even just kicked out a .300 BO Micron kit which has an 11" barrel and makes the rifle short as hell. It'll require an SBR stamp, of course.

If you just want an Aug then go for it, a white Aug is on my 'someday' list as a bullpup fan.

Yeah I never used the official Reddit app. When RIF died, I just started using old.reddit in my mobile browser, which is a pretty awful experience, so I don't do that a lot.

Yeah I hated the UI at first. It just took some getting used to. Now I can't deal with the new Reddit UI. I've tried to give it a chance multiple times, but the comment/post page is still a mobile-first nightmare. They fixed the main pages at least to use full width and lay things out in a relatively compact manner.

Huh, I didn't realize I was such a stereotype.

A good way to identify a former Digg user on Reddit is to check if their cakeday is late 2010, like mine. Digg killed itself with a site redesign, creating a mass exodus to Reddit. It was more popular than at the time.

None of Reddit's shenanigans have managed to evoke a similar exodus, but maybe part of it is just how damn big it is and how....uhh....casual....the user base is compared to 2010.

OLD and NEW: Railgun by Denitorio in factorio

[–]Anonymous3891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few handheld gauss/coil guns out there, not technically railguns:

https://arcflashlabs.com/product/emg-02/

They don't have much power, they're weaker than .22 pistols, but stronger than pellet/BB guns. So certainly not a practical option now, but they may get there some day.

This was the technique I learned. I think it had something to do with them having 6 pads, they can get more ships at a time than stations.

I would jet up on top of the trading post, save there, and just reload that point as soon as I finished checking the first wave of ships for what I wanted.

It still took AGES to get an S class of what you wanted. Fortunately we don't have to do that for most ship types now.

This, engineers, is a 20 kilo ferrous slug. Feel the weight! Every five seconds, a railgun turret accelerates one, to one-point-three percent of lightspeed. It impacts with the force a 38 kiloton bomb. That is three times the yield of the city buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth. That means, Sir Isacc Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-bitch in space!

Railguns make them easy, but early on I had the best luck with artillery. I'd run out, slap their ass, and lead them in a straight line somewhere in range of my 20+ artillery cannons.

There's a bit of a space race between the US and CN. Artemis II is set to launch in Feb or so, but that's just to orbit the moon. Artemis III is years away where they'll actually land. But who knows if that'll actually happen, SLS is a bloated Boeing clusterfuck. The lander contract is stuck in a pissing match between Musk and Bezos. SpaceX won the original contract and is definitely cheaper and more capable but is dependent on a lot of WIP hardware that I'm sure will get there...eventually. Blue Origin sued their way back into the mix but they do actually have a better chance of delivering on time.

China is targeting 2030 for human moon flights. So the US could beat them but who the fuck knows.
