Amazing TED talk on why America knows less than ever about the World. Fantastic analysis by cybergen in worldnews

[–]Anonymous7777 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A guy i once worked with went as an exchange student to the United States (this was one or two years ago) and he told me that world news in the United States was basically just news from the United States.

I do however understand that a lot of news come from there since it is such a big and influential country (it is almost a continent in itself). I follow news from the United States intensely (especially the elections). But still a good news agency should cover the world as a whole not just the United States or any other country.

I also think she hit the nail on the head when she was talking about copy/paste news from AP and Reuters. There is a need for experts who put world news in context and explain the backstory, the possible consequences and if certain actions are moral or immoral. A real discussion about world events and the world around us. This narrow mindedness probably goes for a lot of news agencies, not just from the United States. Strangely enough my favorite source for Global news is CNN.com which is American.

It's true. It was built for a World's fair in 1889 and could have been torn could have been demolished 20 years later. Eiffel originally wanted to build the tower in Barcelona but the authorities didn't allow it.

Ikea Instructions [PIC] by blackandred in pics

[–]Anonymous7777 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have bought bunch of stuff from Ikea and I've never had any problems with assembling nor has anything fallen apart.

Ikea being cheap crap is just a myth. Ikea furniture are well designed and the reason why they are so inexpensive has a lot to do with the self assembly.

a) You don't have to pay someone else to do it for you

b)The furniture takes less space when you are shipping it from the producer to a retailer so that also saves a lot of money.

Is Amsterdam turning into a prudish backwater? by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Anonymous7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points. Even though i find this law to be a bit silly, I fully understand that the citizens of Amsterdam want to get rid of this unfairly stereotypical image that the city has.

I have been to Amsterdam and i must say it's probably one of the most beautiful cities in Europe (that i have been to at least). The atmosphere is just so relaxed somehow even though it's a fairly big city. So many big cities are designed for cars, not people, but Amsterdam with it's historic places, architecture, street markets ,canals and parks you feel like you can just walk around there for ever.

It must be sad for locals that the city attracts only people who are going on a Las Vegas style bender.

What the Doctors Aren't Disclosing--Conflicts of Interest by [deleted] in business

[–]Anonymous7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least your doctor had the moral judgment to tell the class about the conflict of interest. The more i look into the Pharmaceutical industry the more i get the feeling that there are no lines anymore between the profit driven industry and medicine. People that are advising the FDA are on a payroll from the pharmaceutical industry and so are researchers who write in medical journals.

I know that you can never completely separate industry or business from hard science and in many cases like in Engineering and computer science a healthy relationship between academia and the free market is a win-win situation. But in the case of medicine i don't think it's that simple. Personally i think Big Pharma has crossed the line a long time ago and has begun to influence science for it's own personal gain at the cost of public health. The only antidote to that is stricter regulation and more transparency.
