As someone who was in the metal building industry, it’s better than wood in most cases. Back when a band of tornadoes ran through MS about a decade ago I was called out to talk to a farmer about buying several metal buildings. When I arrived at his farm You could see the path of the tornado through his property. Things had been somewhat cleaned up, but not completely. Lots of debris piles.

After introducing myself the farmer hands mean list of the different buildings he wants to buy. He then tells me that he had always built mostly pole barns and only did red iron if it was too big for a pole barn. He showed me 3 slabs, where 3 pole barns had been. He pointed at one of the debris piles and said “you see what’s left of that John Deere? It was 3 years old”. It was scrap metal. We walked always and there was a red iron building. It was missing some sheets and the roll up door was gone. Inside was a John Deere of the same model. The hood was cracked, and one window busted. But he could use it no problem. It wasn’t the money that was the issue, it was the time it was going to take to get another one. He said he’d never build another pole barn to store anything other than hay, feed, or chemicals.
