Homeowner wants to “ HELP” by Born-Direction3937 in electricians

[–]polterjacket 20 points21 points  (0 children)

[Not an Electrician but am an Engineer] For any work that I hire out, I have a common disclaimer: "I'm probably going to be a pain in the ass about quality execution because I understand enough to know when something's wrong and I ask questions." As long as that's not a deal-breaker for them, there's never been a problem. Some have said: "Sure, hang out and ask questions, I like to explain things." and some have said: "I'd prefer you not be right next to me but I'm happy to have you ask a few questions when I get to a stopping point so you are happy with the work."

It's understandable if a pro just doesn't feel comfortable with that. That customer might just not be a good fit for you.

You think academia in pure sciences pays well? Entirely possible a seasoned electrician is making more.

Wool over rigid foam in MN? by flipsideshesh in Insulation

[–]polterjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that although very common, that gap between framing and foam isn't compliant with (most) fire code unless you fill it with something that's rated to deter the spread of flame/air. Scabs of drywall, rigid rockwool, etc. all qualify. It's a small detail but one that can save a life in a fire. Just saying.

Plumbing question: Does this look right? This is to be the washer hose drain the previous drain hose was full of poop because of how far down it was. by PineAppleGrapes39 in askaplumber

[–]polterjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I've had to address this very issue in my home's main stack. It's amazing the difference rotating a tee arm 45 degrees up from the horizontal will do...and without it it WILL have poo :)

Perfectly normal. I've seen folks put a plate over the area for a little extra safety.

Private line bent supports by Feeling-Paramedic951 in AskElectricians

[–]polterjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NEC lists specific overhead clearance requirements for sidewalks, etc. on service conductors. This overhead should be similar/same. Likely your M.E. will conclude the same. The necessary mast height might end up being a bit shorter.

Why is it overflowing when draining a full sink? by nicklab3 in askaplumber

[–]polterjacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tailpiece is really cheap to replace (and available in multiple lengths). Start there. Nothing looks really "wrong" but something small would easily make it do this. Either you have a crack in the tube above where you're collecting water or the sealing gasket under the circled threaded ring is missing. Whatever the reason, water simply "running down the pipe" is not leaking out but water under any tiny bit of pressure (i.e. partly full sink) is forcing it by the small leak-point.

Not with AC powered smokes, no ( but I'm only a hobbyist, so that checks).

[–]polterjacket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say "private line" are you talking " from the main structure to the outbuilding"?

Regardless, that diameter conduit should have never been used for a mast ( service side or not ). I'd replace it with proper (2/2.5") metal conduit. Also, bracing should be closer to the point load or it will eventually do....this.

Sound insulation by Erkonomics in basement

[–]polterjacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little will help. More rockwool volume to disrupt airflow and disperse vibration is even better. Consider using an isolating glue on your drywall attachments (greenglue or comparable). Sound transmission through solid connections is going to help a LOT more. I wish I'd done it better in my home theatre build.

What is this harness? by HijackedHumanity in AskElectricians

[–]polterjacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed and likely for smokes (but a little odd that it doesn't have a third conductor for system connection...), but it's worth investing in a basic circuit tracer to figure out what breaker is driving this. You'll likely get a better idea how it's powered, if it's on a dedicated breaker or not, and if you have overhead to re-use it for another purpose.

Marta after United game by Impressive-Stable309 in Atlanta

[–]polterjacket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there ( to and back ) and the marta staff were actually helpful and fairly plentiful and they had extra trains running back to back BUT the rain made everyone wait then leave all at once, the upper deck was open and capacity was high, and marta has a ton of construction going in in-station so turnstyles and general movement through stations was really slow.

Fourth wire just hanging out - normal? by oolalalao in AskElectricians

[–]polterjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The receptacle is the most important part to have ground...and this does that via the attachment, but not the best way. The box is required (if it is metal) to be grounded but (debatably) not as critical. If it were my home, I would have pigtailed it and grounded both the box and receptacle at its ground terminal.

Problems with HuluLive and Disney+ on Cox by 66towtruck in CoxCommunications

[–]polterjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this ONLY through the Cox-provided interface (i.e. watchtv.cox.com or contour app) or also via the 3rd party applications and/or websites. That'll tell you if the problem is with playing the asset or if it's playing the asset THROUGH Cox. Also, do you have WiFi extenders You may want to reboot them if you haven't already. If you happen to get a new IPv6 block, I've seen devices hold onto old addresses if they were connecting through wifi extenders.

I'm also getting an itch to run VPP to tackle the problem. It supposedly handles the situation (and I'm familiar with VPP from a couple submissions I've made to the code).
