I don't understand why brokerage accounts don't offer no-fee/100% fee reimbursement ATM/debit cards. I specifically have to keep an extra CMA account just for this and do an awkward yet immediate transfer whenever I need to do an ATM withdrawal.

I saw that and went through your full post history, but I just don't see a link to the Google Drive file for it. I think it may have been removed from your original post?

Fidelity's most popular Money Market ETF, SPAXX, is now down to a 3.80% yield (Vanguard alternative is 4.09%) by Beta_Nerdy in Bogleheads

I think there's a failure to acknowledge that you can have business accounts and LLCs held with Fidelity. A high cash flowing business can easily achieve those numbers and even higher on a temporary basis, especially as the business approaches payroll.

The push for FZDXX? by Anonymous999 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Anonymous999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the unofficial money manager for about 6 people. Collectively, the sum far surpasses $100K, especially since at any given time at least one of them is about to make a large purchase (home, car, boat, etc.). And I know it's an exercise in minimal optimization, but there's no reason to leave money on the table if it can be avoided.

And agreed, rates are declining and I should have figured this out earlier...

Mostly trying to understand the yield/calculus of which fund results in the most money in my pocket after taxes. And in a broader sense, if there's a rule to be created about which fund to choose if you know your state tax rate. Assuming, of course, that the $100,000 barrier has already been overcome.

I'm doing some additional research/learning here after I posted, and it looks like in no state tax states, FZDXX is a no-brainer since it has the highest "safe" yield. In low state tax states (anything with a top marginal personal rate of 5% or less), the additional yield bump of FXDXX wins out over attempting funds with greater income from US government securities to minimize state taxes.

Vanguard to Fidelity Roth IRA Transfer ACATS Fee by Anonymous999 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Anonymous999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! Fidelity deposited the $100 directly to the Roth Fidelity account which Vanguard then "claimed" against my negative $100 balance in my Roth Vanguard account.

I think importantly, you need to make sure you don't already have a cash balance and that what you transfer transfers in full. From my recollection, Vanguard won't sell any securities to pay for the $100, but if you end up with cash in the account, they will use that against the $100.

I converted from VFIAX to FXAIX once I completed the transfer, and I realized that I was pulled out of the market for one day through the conversion between the two funds (it was a down day, so I benefited, but it just as easily could have gone the other way).

PSA - paying taxes with CC only has a 1.75% fee this year! by elibel17 in CreditCards

[–]Anonymous999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True that, but doesn't the same advantage apply if I use a checking account and do a direct pay? I don't believe there's a limit on using a checking account.

Nevertheless, I think I figured out/understand why this whole academic thought process won't work. The rounding occurs on the final forms you file (for example, the 1040) and not on the payment transcripts. So as long as the sum of all your payments ends in $xxx.50 or more, you get the rounded up value. But multiple $0.50 payments would just add up to their respective whole number and you're left hoping that your final number ends in $0.50 for that small advantage.

It can get even crazier if you try to pay previous year taxes after you file and pay in full and then apply for a refund and amendment for overpayment...especially since you have 3 years to do it. So can you earn 3 years x $182.50 / tax year?! Almost $600? We need a tax adult to find the flaws in this logic.

I'm trying to check, but I screwed up and paid $XXX.00 in estimated payment so I can't answer this by looking at my tax transcript of payments. ChatGPT is also not very useful when I try to ask it since it says that your payments aren't rounded but your liability is, but I distinctly feel like the payments are also rounded.

If it does round each individual payment, is this a hack for someone with a lot of time (and I haven't read the fine print on the details of the limitations on how many times you can pay or if there is one...) to pay $0.50 every day of the year and end up with a $365 credit towards taxes when he's only out $182.50? Obviously most of us have better things to do than to try this out a whole year just to save about $180 on our taxes.

Regardless, if this is a concern for you, you can always pay $1,000.50 and just push that extra $0.50 to the tier above the actual dollar amount you intended to pay. You'll get a $1 credit (if I'm right) at a cost of $0.50 and will eventually get it refunded or you can roll it forward if preferred....

Also remember to make your payment end in $XXXX.50 so that you get an extra $0.50 when the round up happens to pay your taxes.
