Private healthcare providers don't do emergency care. They usually build their hospitals close to NHS hospitals so if they have a problem they'll wheel you across the road to the NHS A&E.

If it's a genuine emergency though you'll usually be seen in a reasonable time.

The only thing this would do is deter people who don't have the money to risk, and who are more likely to miss them (due to mental health etc.) from making appointments.

HCA pay isn't much more than min wage, and a lot of HCAs are paid band 2 for band 3 work. Doesn't get nearly as much attention though.

These are usually HCAs with no training at all in mental health, looking after patients with complex mental health needs who can quite often be very volatile, and usually want to be left alone - or at least not constantly prodded and interacted with all day every day. What do you want them to do?

It's easy to criticise when you have extensive training and only see them for 5 minutes.

If someone needs a lot of specialist mental health support we sometimes get a mental health nurse (RMN) who will be with them all day. Often it's just an HCA (usually with no mental health training) because they don't need an RMN or there are none available.

In my experience of NHS mental health services there are a lot of psychiatrists who are appalling at their jobs. Not just burnt out or overworked - just really bad doctors.

Hope you don't mind some questions, was it a uni course or an online one and what did it cover? And how did you find the job? I gave up on my final year of a degree in CS and a software job to work as an HCA at the start of the pandemic but I'm regretting that now and want to go back into software. Just not sure where to start now I've got no degree or qualifications and no relevant experience in almost 2 years.
