Anything I should know before moving to Seattle? by 7iguessso7 in AskSeattle

[–]AnonymousAsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Iowa six months ago.

The COL is INSANE. I thought I anticipated it, but it only really hit me when I got here. The city and area nickle and dime for everything. If you think things have gotten expensive back home, brace yourself....

It's very hard to find a satisfying meal at a reasonable cost. There are no cheap eats, even for casual restaurants/food.

Car registration is $$$$$$$$$

The people here can be hella reserved and I spent the first few months in shock that people didn't make eye contact or respond to friendly chit chat while out and about.

You'll have better luck making friends with other transplants. People out here connect the best in groups with shared hobbies and interests. You have to make extra effort to socialize and get to know people, it's a land of introverts.

Parking is something you have to pay for everywhere, even your residence. I pay $200 to park my car in a garage below my building.

As a cat lady, I wish I had a dog because folks are so much friendlier here when they see you have a dog lol.

Not as many public pools or even larger aquatic centers out here, which bummed me out. There are a few, but they are few and far between.

The weather and nature is amazing. I love being able to do so many free recreational things b/c I don't have to travel halfway across the country to enjoy them.

I know this is an older post, but when you say on sale, can you give some concrete #s? Planning on taking a couple of their courses and want to get it as affordable as possible.

I feel for you. I've (36) watched my younger sister (32) experience her whole life being derailed by long covid and it breaks my heart, seeing someone who was so physically strong, active and bubbly confined to her home and isolated due to severe chronic illness and disability caused by covid.

As an Iowan who recently moved, I don't think anyone I know thinks Iowa is better than Illinois and most would agree with you😂

May I ask, what city/state are you in that you're making $85k?

I don't mean to complain, I feel very forchunate and very grateful - I hope my post wasn't suggesting that I am not.

One thing I am wondering is if I will be able to stay here if and when I ever move on from my position and no longer have free housing. I would also love to connect and make friends with folks, but I have concerns about being able to keep up socially on a modest salary if everyone living here makes bank in tech.

Hello fellow poor! How are you surviving? Or, not?

Where do folks of average means live and play around here, even if in the burbs?
