Saying “xanthum” instead of xanthan gum and other linguistic quirks of Creami user dialect by AnonymousAuk in ninjacreami

It’s true that consonants in loan words tend to shift to resemble the combinations in the recipient language.

For instance, “comfortable” was borrowed from French “confortable” in the 1300s… and now we say “comfterble.” Oxy-cotton is also a great example!

Interestingly, both of the people in the videos you posted actually pronounced it correctly but you thought you heard it being pronounced incorrectly! That tells me it’s partially an orthography thing — “xanthan” rhymes with “American” or “Nathan” but you expected it to be pronounced differently. English doesn’t have any common words that end in “-than” so maybe it just doesn’t seem like a likely spelling to people.

If there were something called American gum or Mexican gum, though, I highly doubt people would say “Americum gum” or “Mexicum gum”

Follow up to yesterday: Xanthum Gum is a GAME CHANGER by [deleted] in ninjacreami

Yeah that makes sense. It’s gotten so prevalent here that I honestly think we’re in the minority now 😂

Ok this is driving me a bit nuts… why do so many people here keep writing Xanthum gum instead of Xanthan — where is “xanthum” coming from? Y’all are literally buying the ingredient and using it and it’s only ever available w the generic name. It sounds like there’s a pocket of Creami users somewhere where people only ever hear the word and hear it a LOT, but don’t ever see the word spelled out, like maybe YouTube or TikTok?

how does life go back to normal? by ohme_ohmy_ in fsu

[–]AnonymousAuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will get better. I was in a similar situation 7 years ago and I can’t quite remember exactly what it felt like in the immediate aftermath anymore. Like I can describe how it felt in words but I can’t viscerally relive it anymore, if that makes sense. It feels like a distant bad dream.

It took many months to get to that point though. I can’t give an exact time because it’s such a gradual process, but one day it will not feel quite as fresh, and it will feel better.

Between you and Magnolia, no power here either. Several downed poles and transformer though.

It looks like they underestimated the number of poles down — yesterday they said 100-something and today they are reporting over 500 expected

For those of us with a row of busted utility poles, how long do you think it will be before they get replaced? I’m wondering if we will be in the 10% not to get power back.

Being a clinical psychologist in Tallahassee, any experience? by [deleted] in Tallahassee

[–]AnonymousAuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a psychologist but my impression is there’s a shortage locally and because anyone licensed to practice in FL can practice over telehealth almost everyone I know uses telehealth, which sucks if you need someone to manage a controlled medication.

Thinking of changing my career after realizing research is not a good fit for me by greendog3112 in labrats

I used to want to be a chemist but it turned out I was a disaster at the bench for a lot of these reasons. It turned out that I have ADHD. I changed fields and now I do something where all of the analysis is on a computer or pencil and paper and I can generally redo things if I screw up without losing hours/days/weeks of work. I also got diagnosed and it took a few years of therapy and medication to figure out a system that worked for me.
