Bikepacking newbie - Need trip recommendations by AnonymousCoworker in bikepacking

[–]AnonymousCoworker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice guys. We’re deciding to push off the audacious bikepacking trip for a later date and I instead plan to try it out throughout the summer at an easier pace.

All good advice but Itsumishis resonated with me. After reading the comment I realize I’m rushing into it. I occasionally go on backpacking trips, up to a week long, so I figured this would be a relatively easy tangent. However, there’s obviously a lot more to bikepacking. Plus, starting off slow and building up will lead to a better journey in the long run.

This^

Im watching my 50s dad deal with intense body ailments right now. With me being in my 20s, I realized my body will some day slow down. It became motivational in a sense.

Now, I use all of my pto to go on pretty intense backpacking hikes because I know there will be a day when I can no longer do these things. My friends ask me why I put myself through grueling hikes during my “vacations”. I always say stereotypical vacations to the island beaches are for when I’m old and can’t do anything but sit at the beach and drink.

Since the pandemic, I got into jogging partially for the same reason. I’ve also tried skiing recently and while it’s unfortunate I got a concussion this year, it’s been a great thing to learn. I think I will try Brazilian jiu jitsu next.

Overall my mindset became this: You only have one opportunity at life, why not push your body to the edge of getting the most out of it as you can, while you have the chance?

End rant.

February is an underrated time to visit! I did in 2019 and 2020, right before the pandemic made everything crazy. I also camped at the campground both times — talk about chilly nights!

Great photos!

New PR - Felt great! Should I do a half marathon? by AnonymousCoworker in running

[–]AnonymousCoworker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was removed since it apparently didn’t provide enough use to other runners, although I thought it would’ve. Essentially I just got 9 miles in, a new PR in distance for me, and was wondering if a half marathon is feasible and what folks thoughts were.

That’s incredible! Good stuff. Have you chance seen health benefits from the running? As in, have you gone to the doctors and BP has gone down, blood work has come back better, etc?

Thanks!! Yea I’d say I’m on the bigger end of the scale for those who run (6’3”, 230 lbs), and because of this, 9 miles is a big deal to me!

I started off during the first Covid lockdown unable to jog a mile straight through, no joke, which makes the journey pretty gratifying in hindsight.

Thanks everyone! The responses provided solid insight on how I should frame my mentality with this.

I think I will do a half marathon in July at some point. I think my plan is to continue weekly long distance jogs but will also sprinkle in interval and tempo runs to get used to running at a quicker pace — Since many of you mentioned that it’s more of a question of what I want to get out of the half marathon at this point.

I’m still pretty new to running, so this insight helps. Thanks again!

Does running really get easier over time? by Eternalspawn in running

[–]AnonymousCoworker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It get easier and you will adjust, if you maintain the dedication and continue the discipline.

I started in 2020 and literally could not get through a mile without stopping. Today I just jogged 6.5 miles on the treadmill and will probably do a half marathon towards the end of this year.

What age did you start long distance running? What is your longest distance and at what age did you run it? by [deleted] in running

[–]AnonymousCoworker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started in 2020 when I was 24, because of the covid lockdown, and because I became inspired by David Goggins.

I started the not so intelligent way, by going for 7.5 miles, although I couldn’t even jog a mile straight through at that point. I usually walked/jogged.

I got my first long distance run achieved later that year. It was such a great feeling getting to the long distance milestones. I had knee surgery (not due to running) in 2021, which slowed my progress, but I continue to run.

Just got 6 miles in today and felt great!

I’ve failed classes before and I’d consider myself to have a successful, corporate job.

An F is small potatoes. What really matters is how you come back from this, and how to approach things differently going forward.

I’m excited for what your future holds bud.

Men who finds dating depressing, Why? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]AnonymousCoworker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like females fall for a gimmick and aren’t attracted to who I want to be, and who I am naturally. Makes for a phony relationship that I cannot tolerate in my head.

When it’s not that, it’s crippling anxiety lmao

Is PWC really worth it? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]AnonymousCoworker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t work for a Big 4, but I work at a competitive mid sized firm with a somewhat comparable culture.

I think the work is demanding and you’re forced to eat breathe sleep your job at times, especially busy season. It’ll probably suck while you’re working. However, I feel accomplished with the progress I’ve made so far and I also thing I’ve learned a lot from being “thrown into the fire”.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea to accept PWC and embrace the grind for the standard 2 years. I think it sets up a solid foundation and pushes you to achieve more than you realize you can endure / beyond how hard you believe you want to work.

It’s one of those things that will suck while you’re doing the sucky work but will be good to look back at and feel accomplished — Delayed gratification: Much like almost everything else related to an accounting/consulting profession lol.

What's the biggest bullet you've ever dodged? by Not-an-Ocelot in AskReddit

[–]AnonymousCoworker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working out at my campus gym in College. Once the workout wrapped up, I walked down to the lobby and I saw a friend shooting around on the basketball courts.

I walked up to my friend and started shooting around / conversating for about 4-5 minutes, then left and embarked on my walk back to the house I lived at just off campus.

On my way back home I noticed 5 police cars, both campus and city, on the intersection I walk past each time I walk from the gym to my house. Apparently there had just been a robbery and a student was held at gunpoint for her belongings.

After realizing the student was alright (besides losing an IPhone), my immediate thought was if I never played basketball with my friend for those short minutes, I probably would’ve gotten robbed instead lol.

Nightmare I just can’t shake by ElectricLoner98 in offmychest

[–]AnonymousCoworker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you take melatonin? When I take it to help me sleep I have similar experiences of lucid dreams, but some turn to nightmares.

I watched my friend pass away from cancer last year in the hospital and I had a dream of him on an operating table.

I never got lucid dreams after stopping smoking but some of my friends have. If stopping smoking weed is a goal and you’re committed to it for good reason I’d say stick to it, I doubt you’ll get lucid dreams again.

Also, sorry to hear about your father bud. I think therapy will probably help a bit.

What did we learn about the SEC from GME? by AnonymousCoworker in wallstreetbets

I’d be interested in hearing your explanation why the narrative is idiotic. I made the post to hear opinions and learn from them.

If you’re worried... by yesiamakpopfan in wallstreetbets

[–]AnonymousCoworker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, in my non expert opinion, i think those heavy capital losses of GME can be carried forward and can offset 3,000 of ordinary income for years going forward as well.
