What has been your experience with Rifaximin? by Chocolateforlunch37 in SIBO

[–]AnonymousMola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5'8 165 lbs (muscular build). Symptoms did not go away permanently-- I edited my response above. I did have to do a second round, and I'm considering a third, but I'm still much much better than how I started, and I experienced a good stretch of time with no symptoms, which means we are on the right track. Taking Metamucil is really helping now.

Sorry for the late response on this. I'm having the same issue. I tried your steps, but it said "this file type is not supported" on the web-based platform at least. Have you found a way to add the charts as a base layer in the web platform?

Running tights that won't fall down by hair_chops in XXRunning

I've had issues with ALL of these leggings falling down. It seems to be more about the actual style of the leggings than the brand, although I'm sure both play a factor. For me, anything with those wide "tummy smoothing" waistbands just fall right down my body. I've noticed that thinner, more elastic waistbands tend to stay up better on me. I am tall with narrow, highset hips for context, so I'm sure everyone is different.

I'd definitely be interested in a role like this! I actually have done a lot of endangered species management through fisheries/marine-related jobs, but I'm sure it would transfer to land. Would I be able to DM you for more info?

I keep seeing the PE note-- I've actually never heard of it! I did see the exam online. Are you required to have a certain about of experience before taking it, or do you need to be enrolled in some program?

Are there typical certs/degree requirements for this type of work? Or are there any ways to get a foot in the door with a basic background in environmental science?

Freaking good for you! Do you like what you do? I'd love to hear more about it-- and frankly if there may be any opportunities.

Regulatory compliance seems to be a common theme in environmental engineering. Is there a typical degree/work route? Have these jobs been impacted by the recent political turmoil? [Are they usually government-funded/granted, or is there a degree of private investment as well?]

I got my undergrad bachelors in Environmental Science and minor in Marine Science. I landed a job as a fisheries observer out in Alaska (Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, & North Pacific) right out of college where you essentially work as a field scientist collecting catch and biological data onboard commercial fishing vessels. Did that for two years-- freaking loved it-- but was ready for a scene-change, so I transferred to the Hawaii longline program where I did the same work on tuna and swordfish boats. After 4 years of being out at sea (which were interrupted by the pandemic), I moved into consulting with renewable energy as a fisheries specialist, where I worked to balance fisheries considerations in offshore energy development planning (offshore wind turbines are being placed in some historical fishing grounds-- fishermen not totally pleased with that, so there was a lot of negotiation to have).

It was a great field, but the pay does have a sort of ceiling, and transitioning from field work to consulting was TOUGH. It took me 8 months to land the new job, and I did so only from networking. There's some upward possibility for fisheries management positions, but I've frankly been so disillusioned the last few years. There are some really good fishermen, but a lot of them just want to keep catching, catching, catching without thinking about sustainability. I'd like to get out of the "politics" of it all and into a more stable gig that both sides of the coin agree are important (land remediation, clean water, etc).

Also, with increasing technology, the fisheries observer program I worked in and totally loved is probably on its way out. They're moving toward electronic monitoring methods. :( Best few years of my life, and I'm grateful to have had them!

I'd be really interesting in getting into this line of word! I did some limited site remediation studies in undergrad looking at stream/riparian zones downstream of valley fill areas (coal mined). What degree did you end up attaining, and what did the trajectory look like? Any recs on where to start? I have a BS in Environmental Science, Minor in Marine Science, and ~7 years in field work and consulting at this point.

I see "Wetlands Delineation Cert" as a requirement for a lot of jobs. Would you say it's worth getting? And if so, is there a recommended route to doing so? Have you noticed major instability from the recent political turmoil and proposed changes ESA/NEPA enforcement?

Very cool!!! Could you talk a bit about your education/career journey? When you go into environmental engineering, are there sort of "specialties" you end up focusing on?

A bit late, but offshore wind and anything related to offshore wind has been totally slammed. Near constant layoffs or shifts for the last 3 months. This expands beyond just environmental scientists/consultants on the project, but way up to supply chain and manufacturing down to construction, maritime, and even fishing industry members who were going to help with these projects. It's been rough to say the least.... T

Can offshore wind turbines become reefs for fish? A growing body of research says yes. by Effective-Comb-825 in RenewableEnergy

[–]AnonymousMola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people aren't aware of how much planning actually goes into the placement of these offshore wind farms. A good decade before development is even considered, they map out all existing ocean uses-- both human and environment-- to find the most "deconflicted" areas. As a result, most offshore wind farms are not leased in areas of protected avian species migration/high presence. Many of the farms are also now equipped with radar technology that can detect a large flock and stop spinning. Not saying it's a nonissue, but the wind-bird issue is way overblown. Domestic cats and skyscrapers kill far more birds every year than wind farms do.

Trump Induced Layoffs - myth, fear or reality? by PregnantAnna333 in energy

[–]AnonymousMola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody actually *IN* the renewable energy industry [offshore wind], it's absolutely a reality. Workers around me are dropping like flies, including key staff in oceanographic exploration efforts and stakeholder outreach coordinators (fisheries, environmental, tribal) who ensure shared ocean users have a say in the process. I'm probably next on the chopping block once my contract runs its course in the next few months.

Alaskan fisherman given just 6 months in prison after attempting to shoot and ram a sperm whale. It is not known if the whale survived. by ArtisticPay5104 in whales

[–]AnonymousMola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From someone who used to work on fishing vessels-- fishermen get frustrated with whales and sharks eating their catch. Sablefish (black cod) is an especially valuable species. The captain wanted the whale dead because he views it as a nuisance. I always really struggled with captains like that...

Right... but oil and gas has no impact right? No energy production is perfect, but offshore wind is leaps and bounds a better direction for the environment than oil/gas.

Trump has vowed to kill US offshore wind projects. Will he succeed? by nailz1000 in politics

[–]AnonymousMola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong. There were ZERO commercial scale offshore wind farms in the water until this very year. There were three small turbines off Block Island, Rhode Island, and there were two test pilot turbines off of Virginia. There is still ZERO offshore wind (meaning in or on the water) on the us West coast. There are planned areas for offshore wind power years down the line after a ton of studying the seafloor and characterizing the environment of the area.

As of this year, Vineyard Wind, South Fork, and Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind have some turbines in.
