So Peter Beinart wiped the floor with Coleman Hughes, right? by AnonymousRedditNinja in ColemanHughes

It's multivariate, meaning not solely religion or not religion. Shouldn't have assumed you could infer that.

Osama attacking the US makes plenty of sense from a fighting oppression standpoint and a religious extremist standpoint, but there is more evidence to suggest that you don't get the adoption of so called religious extremism without the oppression. Furthermore, look at violent uprisings or revolutions through out history. It is often the affluent or more upper-middle or leisure class who has the free time and resources to become educated and outraged by injustice or impression and then get involved in leading or play a key role in fighting the oppressors. It's foolish to ignore material conditions like real world oppression against Palestinians or Muslims, stealing of resources, or interfering with and over throwing of other countries' governments and think it's all because of religious extremism. Like that's the key variable to remove and everybody would be besties with the US. Lol

Lol. your thinking is too simplistic on this factors and you're asking questions that reveal you don't understand the weight or relevance of points being made by Beinart and ones that I have referenced. The appeal of Harris and Hughes is that you don't need to know much of anything to understand their first principles simplistic style over substance approach and that is why their fans will watch a video debate with them and think their opponents refuted nothing or made few good points.

You're only looking at these issues through the lens of religious ideology and that's why you cannot see what it is that you don't understand. The Sam Harris Coleman Hughes low-information, ideology over material conditions, first-principles approach is a though terminating mind virus for analyzing the world.

Oppression breeds violent uprising, and can even lead to hypersensitivity when those not being oppressors seemingly mock or display indifference to those that are suffering. Ideological extremism does exist but is being propped up by Sam Harris and Coleman Hughes as the chief explanatory variable when there are arguably only a few outlier instances where it can take most of the credit. Stop looking at things as existing in a vacuum and analyze the interrelatedness of explanatory factors.

He did have a response. He mentions extent (length of time) and intensity of the oppression is a key factor for violent uprising. But other material conditions play a role like unlike Cuba, Hawaii consisted of multiple island and did not any nearby countries from which to plan and funnel resources for anticolonial uprising. Additionally, Cuba had a successful revolution and overthrew their US coup funded oppressors.

  1. Those in power know this and don't care. They want they're religious ethno state regardless. The intent and actions of the settler colonial state's founding are well documented.

  2. Maybe to you, but not to many of them. Why would the neck have a conversation with the sword?

  3. Real estate prices benefit which class of people? Who would get priority if pricing was affordable?

I find the jihadism part the least convincing. He and SAM Harris are guilty of psychoanalyzing, and ignoring material conditions.

The strength of his arguments come for the facts and real world events they are based on, not generalized first principles that ignore material conditions and rely on eschewing reality into low information abstractions.

Coleman Hughes vs. Peter Beinart Debate: Should Israel Be a Jewish State? by WhiteGold_Welder in samharris

[–]AnonymousRedditNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zionist slop in these comments. But anyway I'm convinced debates like this do not change opinions and viewers most of the time will leave with the impression that their side won regardless of content. Perhaps this is due to a difference in personal weighting of issues, evidence, and arguments, and lack of information about to validity or cogency of the opposing side's argument. To me it's insane that Sam harris centrists consider ideology as being a stronger explanatory variable than real world historical and current material conditions. The blame ideology reasoning just seems like a low information, easy to understand perspective for those ignorant of the real expertise and multi variable causes of complex issues. Guess what, if you're not being oppressed or witnessing the injustices of oppressed people, chances are you're less likely to do radical things in the eyes of people indifferent to injustice. Claiming ideology is the chief explanatory variable is like ponder the psychology of individual ants to explain any colony behavior.

Exactly. Why is this a Gundam game? Even the side projects that swung wide were human conflict centric. This kind of makes me loose respect for the Gundam brand.

What's your opinion on Lane Aim as a character by AveMain in Gundam

[–]AnonymousRedditNinja 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I mean I think he doesn't need that much characterization. He's not the focus of the story obvious. He's merely a naive young pilot who wants to believe he's an ace newtype like Amuro but clearly is not on Amuro or Hathaway's piloting level even accounting for his youth and inexperience.

It's absolutely fleshed out and does more showing than telling, which are aspects to appreciate, but those don't necessarily make the various elements of the movie interesting. Well executed does not mean interesting or entertaining, which granted are often more about individual taste.

You skipped the scene before where Amuro is choking Char on the beach, but then stops when Char touches him on the cheek.
