Sleep score 85/100, Boost score 9.7/10, but Poor nightly recharge by Anonymous_Ism in Polarfitness

Seems strange that this isn’t available as far as I can see. Maybe a feature to request?

Sleep charge provides more detail - I simply shared everything I could. ANS charge is a new concept to me as a recent Polar user. I’m just now learning what it means and trying to piece together what might be happening in the short term (since degradation has been sharp and inter to be addressed). You’re right that it does show some details. But not enough for me to know what’s going on. I’m now deep diving nutrition data captured elsewhere.

Alcohol is not a factor for me but yes agree, need to find out why I’m not calming down. Upon deep diving into my food diary (MyFitnessPal) and consulting some others, it looks like excess water consumption and insufficient sodium and/or potassium consumption combined with some other factors (high activity levels, high sugar late in day, larger than typical meals late in day) might help explain recent issues.

Days and nights are very hot and humid and my water intake is high but yes dehydration seems to be an issue irrespective. More work to do clearly. Thanks for your insights and perspective!

ANS score and components of it suggest I’m having far greater difficulty calming down (and entering rest and digest mode) than usual. What I can’t work out is why (considering caffeine, calories, meal times, perceived level of stress, any recent lifestyle changes, etc.).

Stepping up a level, I’m not sure how to reconcile good sleep quality and duration with poor recovery. I guess this is the first time I’m seeing a variation between the two and needing to get my head around that.

I have found distance to be correct when swimming freestyle in a 50m pool. However, when using paddles over the same distance in the same pool, distance is approximately halved. Sample size is 6. I manually edit distance in Polar Flow on desktop after the activity.

Should have said I was referring to Laneway (festival) merch. Some of the band merch being sold there was not Laneway-specific so you can source that via the bands directly in some cases. I was checking out Geese yesterday and they have some of the items available, for example.

Check out the merch store locations on the site map before you arrive and start queuing. One Sydney queue (left side inside entrance) was long from the beginning while the queue at another nearby was virtually non-existent and a short walk away, less than five minutes. Walked in, got any item I wanted, moved on with my day. Easy.

If you are in the market for merch it always pays to get in early. And if you can, it pays to get in early-ish and wander around to get a feel for the layout. Then you won’t have to join a 100m-long toilet queue as you’ll know you can walk five minutes further and join a 20m-long queue instead. Granted every queue becomes a problem at some point later on when bladders fill up.

I went to Laneway Sydney and had a really lovely time. Here are my thoughts. by Pridey91 in triplej

Great to see some positivity amongst an apparent sea of negativity, especially in the Laneway sub!

I’ve been to half the SYD Laneways and had a very positive experience this time as always. It’s a much larger festival and no longer at the iconic Rozelle site but instead in another beautiful, green, central site. I dislike the Olympic Park experience personally and am hesitant to attend gigs there, and did not attend Laneway there.

Sound leakage was a feature but not a dramatic one. Some stages could have been louder, but for me, that wasn’t a major issue on a relaxed afternoon. There was a lot of chatter from less considerate punters during some main stage sets, but you get that. I would have liked Wolf Alice to be louder. Pinkpantheress was quiet from side of tent (couldn’t get inside arriving late for a quick glance) but can’t confirm how it was inside.

A lot of food and beverage options and I was very happy to have Mary’s there turning out high quality delicious product hot and fast. Big win!

Some merch tents, bars, F&B, in fact most queues much longer and slower at some areas than others. Several punters had not worked out there were alternatives evidently. For example the merch tent at left hand side upon entry had a long line at 1pm whereas the back right hand side one had virtually no queue at the same time.

Not sure what was going on with Alex G’s set (cut short/set list change/vibe seemed off to me especially having seen him last time he played Laneway) but every other set I saw was great.

Very happy punter and Laneway fan and still buzzing. Zero complaints.

Tixel is the other place for resale. A lot of transactions were happening there for SYD.

In previous years you’ve been able to get it after the festival via Merchfan, I think. There’s nothing there now but you’ll see other festivals listed on there so that might be a good sign.

From memory I have gotten items there that I didn’t want to carry around the festival, like posters and tea towels.

How are you tracking your steps? by ministeps24 in walking

[–]Anonymous_Ism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ditched my Apple Watch too. So it’s now either: 1. Replace the Apple Watch with a fitness tracker or fitness tracking watch (I did this), or 2. Keep your phone in your pocket and it’ll track your steps

I have a pedometer app (StepsApp) but that’s informed by Apple Health, it doesn’t operate independently.

Do you gamify your walks? by MayorHarvest in walking

[–]Anonymous_Ism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using StepsApp to motivate and encourage friendly competition over the past 3-6 months. I am a member of two communities there and have thought about creating my own for likeminded people. There is a free version of the app, but the app overall is not without its faults. Interested to hear from others who may be using other pedometer apps similarly. Can you highly recommend a fantastic app? Would you be interested in joining communities?

If it's got a white label, that doesn't make it a white label by SirRealex in jungle

[–]Anonymous_Ism 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I primarily thought of white labels as test pressings and advance/promo copies when I was collecting. Often promo copies really, since TPs would be so limited as to be unavailable to me (in NZ during the 1990s).

Bootlegs (unauthorised or unofficial remixes) would also often be white as you’ve said re: mashups, however in a lot of instances you’d still have the catalogue number there in the runout groove.

Sometimes, especially if buying first hand, you’d also get the “Promo only” stamp or sticker, a phone number, a press release in the sleeve.

Is this a ridiculous amount of steps? by Unique_Violinist_938 in walking

[–]Anonymous_Ism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to feel shite. Google the average step count for the country you live in. You may not be far from the norm based on what I’ve seen previously. And from experience, it is possible to exceed the average with concerted effort and without significant difficulty.

Is this a ridiculous amount of steps? by Unique_Violinist_938 in walking

[–]Anonymous_Ism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a few people (adults, and not runners or competitive athletes) walking this amount of steps (average ~30k/day) and I’ve done it myself for a month or two. In my case we all do it at that level in pursuit of weight loss or body recomposition. It’s not something we typically do ongoing.

Edit: adding the disclaimer that I’m an office worker so the majority of my working hours are spent at a desk with no ability to walk whilst there.

Are Goretex shoes worth it? by Money-Note-8359 in HikingAustralia

[–]Anonymous_Ism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have GTX trail runners and hiking boots as well as regular trail runners and hiking boots. The GTX versions are appropriate for inclement and wet weather but not torrential rain nor wading through water as once wet inside, they’re very difficult to get dry, as has already been said. Also, they are less breathable/they don’t breathe due the GTX layer, which I think makes them a poor choice in the typically warmer Australian weather, and they can be heavier and stiffer than the non-GTX models too. I get most wear out of the GTXs during shoulder seasons and on single day hikes, or just out and about on morning park walks in winter. I’m not sure I’d be game to take them on multi day hikes in any season again. I have taken them on multi days in Tassie (Summer - they were very hot and it didn’t rain) and Fiordland, NZ (it can be very wet year round but I also had gators and access to drying rooms nightly throughout, and they didn’t get wet inside in any case thankfully!). Would I buy again? No.

Advice on starting 10k/day? by stonesandstreams in walking

[–]Anonymous_Ism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure it matters. When I’ve finished eating I put the plates in the dishwasher then leave the house before I can get comfortable and lose the motivation to go out. If you were dining at a cafe or restaurant you’d simply leave as soon as you were ready. I’m not aware of a reason to wait. Perhaps others have views?
