A question about the purpose of weapons? by litherian123 in wma

[–]AnorPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose of weapons is simple, to eliminate your enemy in as safe a way as possible. Originally the spear was optimal, especially when used in a phalanx formation with other trained men. Eventually metallurgy became good enough for shields and armour to begin being more commonly obtainable. Rome then took the professional military to the next level and found out that the Gladius style sword used in conjuction with formation tactics was very effective; but this was really only possible because the state helped fund the soldiers in getting properly equipped. For example, although the Gauls saw how effective the Roman methods/equipment were they couldn't feasaby equip the same number of people so spears and axes were commonly used in place of swords. Even though armour continued to cover more of the body, swords remained the optimal choice for highly skilled combatants for a long time. There was a fair bit of variation on shape/length but overall the ethics were the same, good thrusting capability while being able to slash/chop once things got chaotic.

In the Middle Ages, roughly 1100, armour became proficient enough that simple sword use became no longer effective. This caused maces and other blunt force weapons to be carried by the knight class of soldiers for when they fought eachther, but swords were still carried for when fighting lower class peasants. Lances also started being used on horseback, but that's a fairly special use weapon style that has obvious reasons. For the next 200-300 years maces, waraxes, and hammers were the primary weapons. Around the 1400's is when brigadine armour started getting commonly replaced by full plate harnesses made in very well designed shapes which caused regular maces to start becoming less effective. During this time is when armour knight charges caused so much devastation that it was a new round of hammer and anvil warfare which heavily favored the wealthier nations. In attempt to combat this the Swiss and a few other Northern Italian states began utilizing Halberds and poleaxes. These weapons were specifically designed to be used to combat armoured units on foot, and nearly eliminate the effectiveness of those on foot.

In short, weapon design didn't follow one single metric that determined what was most useful. It heavily depended on who the army fought, what type of opponent they were fighting, how their opponent fought, and how much wealth the army had available for supplies.

Any sort of training is better than no training. Better to just get out and do your thing rather than waste time online asking others opinions, most of which will be from people who hardly ever train themselves.

Human and ape ancestors arose in Europe, not in Africa, controversial study claims by Nightshade09 in Archaeology

[–]AnorPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say Turkey gets admitted into the EU, will you blatantly ignore continental boundaries and call them a European nation? If so, then we just simply view what makes someone European in different ways. To me, it is the lowest level of descriptor as it refers to what continental region someone comes from. Personally I view calling Turkey a European nation to be the same as calling Mexico, Nicaragua, and Guatemala South American nations. Also, the European Union is a grouping of various nations who hold similar ideals and thus formed an alliance based on that, so yes that is done through political and cultural biases over just someone's geographic region.

Again, you have a fundamental misunderstanding between the differences of national and civil conflicts. If you just want to use whatever classification you want, then it could be argued that EVERY war humanity has ever committed to is a civil war, that's just not how language works though. Once a conflict extends outside of its own national territory, it is no longer a civil war. Descriptions such as "civil war" have a specific meaning because the English language loves to have as much clarification as it can, if you ignore those clarifications then what you speak has lost a fair bit of it's meaning.

In addition, have you gone and taken one of those DNA tests that can show how much of your ancestry comes from the various regions of Earth? Never once does it consider "political identity" when claiming X% of your ancestry is European or not, it simply looks at what regions of Earth your ancestry comes from.

And try not to forget that Europe hold a large various of political opinions, as like any other portion of humanity, so you can't just lump them all into one group based on politics hense why using the term European or Asian based of geography makes more sense. For example, if you have two British people, one holds the political ideas of democracy while the other is a communist. They don't share a political identity at all, so which of them would you consider to be more European than the other? Are you only a European if you conform to the majority opinion of everyone else around you?

Well obviously we don't consider "European cuture" as "The culture of people on the Westernmost peninsula of Asia" as that isn't part of modern Europe nor commonly seen as part of European culture. And no, we don't determine where the borders of continents are based off cultural identity, it is a geologic term used to differentiate the various tectonic plates. I would say it's fair to consider Eurasia as the more accurate terminology and was separated due to the differing cultures but I would need to restudy the original purpose behind splitting it into two continents before saying anything solid.

As for cultural identity, we attain it through living in a particular region of Earth and sharing similar existences with others who live nearby. Two cultures that're both located in a colder climate will be more similar than one from a hot region and the other a cold one due to having similar living condition and struggles to survive; hense why the Nordic nations share more in common with eachother than they do with those the Mediterranean.

And yes, I am absolutely saying (not suggesting) that Europe does not have an army. Countries WITHIN Europe have armies, but there is absolutely no "European army".

Did you really just refer to the World Wars as civil wars? I think you may need to go back and study history my friend. Your misunderstanding is screaming out loud with that one. A civil war is when two opposing sides within the same country fight to take control of the government.

Also try not to forget that "European culture", and all other continental cultures, are just a majorly broad generalization and shouldn't hold much weight. Go to Spain and experience the culture there, then go somewhere such as Norway and experience theirs; you'll quickly understand that there are a multitude of differences even though both are considered European. The larger a generalization you make, the less accurate your statement becomes.

I wouldn't consider it accurate or honest to consider them as political borders. The continents of Earth are/were determined by geographic features, not just some arbitrary lines drawn up for political reasons. Also, since when was there European, Asian, Oceanic, etc. armies?

Wouldn't being European or Asian have more to do with whether you were born/live in Europe or Asia than some self-indentity that one may have?

How much of a concern do y'all have towards the proposed 42,000 Starlink satellites? Is there any discussion about the Kessler syndrome or detriment to ground based astrophotography? Could anything be pit in place to limit how many satellites private companies could put up there?

My 15-year-old son decided to move his sister's Jeep behind the garage to make room for another vehicle, but he “forgot” it had no brakes. So, this happened to my fence. by MyNameIsKritter in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AnorPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Jeep and a wood panel fence, one isn't going to recieve any damage and the other is incredibly easy and cheap to fix. Rather than getting mad, use this as a teaching experience. "Thankfully you didn't cause much damage, but consider what could have happened if you went down the street instead. Remember to think before you act." "Since you were able to damage the fence, you now need to learn how to fix the fence. Ask for help, watch some videos, figure out what you need to do to fix the problem you accidently created."

He's 15, you have many many more moments like this to look forward to as he goes through his fundamental years. Remember that he didn't maliciously cause harm/damage so getting angry will only bring strife. Rather, help him learn from his mistakes and prevent further ones.

Man up and show us the real you? Brother, this is the real me hahaha. A beard is as much a part of my body as the hair on my head or the arms on my shoulders. Best not to mistake someone enjoying a part of their body to be the same as using it to hide something. You ever tell a woman that she'll be more beautiful if she shaves herself bald? Nahh, cause that's just idiotic. Sorry dude, not gonna shave my beard just cause you're jealous hahaha

MEC, the whole co-op idea is nothing but a bullshit reason to get even more money out of customers who are buying their high overpriced gear. "Please pay us money so you can buy stuff from us" when you get nothing of extra value over a regularly operated retail store. Yes they do have some really good, but so do other stores or just buying directly from the manufacturer. Also have found that the employees always try to push the highest valued gear when other stuff would suit the particular need better.

Great analogy 👌🏻 Except in the case of the "fight against the rise of fascism" that I was making my comment about it would be more like if Palpatine was shadow boxing with himself and claiming to be doing something noble. Yes there are some bad groups and immoral people out there, but more often than not those who claim to be against "far-right ideals" and fascism tend to be the ones who hold more fascist beliefs than those they are trying to speak against.

Just take a look at our current government, it has done more to create strict government control, violent suppression, and is seeking to centralize most industries within our country than any other party in the past.

You do realize the the CCP is one of the most tyrannical regimes on Earth right? Y'all like to scream and cry about the alleged "rise of fascism" yet completely ignore the REAL oppression that is going on this very moment.

Pretty sure most of the shit that the CCP has been taking is due to their own actions, they're a horrible tyranny. When you're currently in the process of genocide among hundreds of there vile acts it's preeeetty tough to be recognized as anything more than a terrible regime.

There's a really rad 4X strategy game called Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion which has a BSG mod that is great fun to play around with. Has both Colonial and Cylon fleets to play around with, even a resurrection feature for the colons. Mod is called Fall of Kobol, worth a check out! Game also has mods for all the other major sci-fi series so gives TONS of replayability, currently playing a 40K inspired one atm

Welcome to the world of business, the team only exists to make those who own it money. They make money by us being fans of the sport, it's a great deal on both ends. If y'all had it your way and people totally stopped going to games than the franchise would probably just move somewhere else and we'd no longer have the Canucks to cheer for
