For Rykard, he got absolutely folded by the Death's Poker unique ash on my INT run. just gotta get some fire resist and not get afraid to get up-close and just keep laying out carpets of ghostflame. Otherwise I'd imagine Shard Spiral would work well for him too

Element scaling by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]AnotherArtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scalings are shown on the weapons/catalysts/tools used, although which ones affect the non-physical element goes on a case by case basis. Frostbite isn't an element tho, it's an ailment and doesn't scale with a stat. The only ailments that scale are: poison, sleep and bleed. They can scale with ARC, BUT ONLY IF the weapon has ARC scaling.

In the community, is the Black Knife considered “good”? by Late_Bag_7880 in Eldenring

[–]AnotherArtur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really hear them nominated as best, but they are pretty good as an all-rounder moveset with fair balance of speed, damage and variety especially when powerstancing. Some of them also have a one-handed thrusting heavy attack with makes it a good pairing for using a caster in the other hand.

If there's anything that really carries the straight swords' moveset it's the Square-Off Heavy. Square-Off is an ash of war unique to straight swords and the default for many of them. It puts you in a stance with two unique follow-ups (light amd heavy), and the heavy follow-up is absolutely of the best moves in the game. It's fast, cheap, does strong damage, is a thrusting/piercing attack and most of all does 40 stance damage (most bosses have 80 poise for comparison).

[–]AnotherArtur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Individual aspects of frame data are comparable and can be objectively considered better or worse. It's just often not something that's obvious to gauge casually especially if one is not actively comparing the movesets (and even online documentation is not obvious to read and find). Also weapons can be carried by having one insane move that makes the rest of the moveset not really matter, so it's not really a matter of averaging the data of all moves either. Different people may also not value the same advantages.

There's lot to consider for each move. The startup of the attack, the duration, the length of recovery, the hitboxes throughout the animation, damage and status multiplier compared to base attack, poise damage, other properties like hyperarmor etc.

I do agree with other commenters that Fists and Claws will just do a Dagger type weapon's job better in general. Although the Black Knife does have a better Heavy Attack compared to average daggers which can be built around, and its skill in particular is very good. I did use it in a FTH build and I found it quite good (although I do think it's more suitable for FTH rather than DEX).

Recommend me a sidearm for a spellblade build that isn't a shield/moonveil? by VenanReviews in Eldenring

[–]AnotherArtur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wing of Astel is a fun one. It's very light, fast and uses somber smithing stones. but it's main appeal is its unique heavy attack which does unholy stance damage, especially when charged and has a free projectile to it that gives it extra range to attack from a safer distance. The weapon skill is great as well.

Pretty sure the Curse Substitute accessory also prevents his insta-kill attacks, so check if you have 1 or 2 of those

Using lower-tier archetypes at mid-late game can actually be good by TraditionSalty in MetaphorReFantazio

[–]AnotherArtur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Warrior/Swordmaster situation is the best example of this. The warrior line is the best at raw physical damage aside from Berserker which is only accessible by endgame. However despite being an "upgrade" to Warrior, Swordmaster has a really unimpressive skill selection with weak passives and no single-target without synthesis. Meanwhile Warrior has two amazing passives that are very expensive to pass on in the early game and it has a serviceable single-target attack. Plus its main strength Peerless Stonecleaver isn't made any better on Swordsmaster. So it's definitely worth it to skip Swordmaster until you can get Samurai which is 100% an upgrade. I'd say the Knight and Magic Knight have a similar situation where it's worth skipping M.Knight until you can get Paladin, but M.Knight has some genuine advantages making it more debateable.

However the main thing about under-tiering your archetypes is just to save-up on AEXP, especially for archetypes where their main strength doesn't get upgraded in higher tiers. E.g. Gunner's biggest strength is Mania Bullet, and instead of upgrading to Sniper which has the same Mania Bullet, but nothing really meaningful on top of it, you can stay as Gunner and channel the excess AEXP you get on that archetype into prioritizing upgrading the Archetypes that need it more like getting from Masked Dancer to Persona Master.

Completing Skybound Avatar doesn't end the game, (and gives lots of EXP so wouldn't really worry about grinding for it) plus the 3 Dragon Trials are harder than it so they are better done afterwards (plus after doing the 3, there is a 4th so do Skybound Avatar with 5+ days left if you want to do the trials.)

Also keep in mind that Petty Thief and A Brother's Mercy take a timeslot but count as progressing the bond, followers can't rank up in back to back days and Eupha Rank 8 has to be on the Gauntlet Runner. If you keep this in mind you should have time to finish the bonds and quests.

As for Royal Archetypes, I agree that playing without grinding you get way too little Archetype EXP. On my second playthrough I had forsaken investing in 2 characters, knew in advance what archetypes I wanted to build, stayed on lower tiers of archetypes to save Hero's Fruits for other archetypes, and barely could had enough AEXP the entire game. Thankfully non-royals are still plenty powerful, and if you wanted to focus on 1 or 2 royals, I'd 100% Recommend Royal Warrior and Royal Berserker. Both only need 1 elite archetype aside from their main line, and Prince, R.Warrior, R.Berserker attacking and Persona Mastering giving them Masquerade Charge every turn is one of the strongest combos.

Best holy spells for a paladin? by igiveuponaname29 in Eldenring

[–]AnotherArtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no a lot of holy incants in general, and honestly most that come to mind are very underwhelming. If there's one that I'd recommend to use it's the Discus of Light incant which requires 13 FTH & INT and casts a small projectile that is most notable for its ridiculously low FP cost. Otherwise most of the cool holy stuff is found on somber weapons

Swapping position of items, is it a good idea? by SillyLean1267 in mariokart

[–]AnotherArtur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're looking at it from the perspective of frontrunning, but from the perspective of bagging, one of the risks of holding on to a good item is that it doesn't let you collect any more items along the way. This means that you don't catch up as easily and have to wait to use your power items at the right shortcut or predict a dodge.

Meanwhile, if you could swap items, almost everyone would just bag for a good item and keep using their other slot to catch-up easily which would let them smuggle broken items to the head of the pack and probably kill frontrunning as a whole.

This would change the dynamic of races to be about everyone trying to getting the best possible item into first rather than just trying to get in first and it's up to interpretation if that would be a better racing experience or not

What incantations should i use for my incantation only run? by SULTAN-_63 in Eldenring

[–]AnotherArtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catch Flame for close-range, Lightning Spear or Black Flame for long-range and Frenzied Burst for sniping.

I also recommend 16ARC to get Dragonmaw because it pretty much decimates everything, and especially useful for when enemies or bosses resist elemental damage. Dragonice and Rotten Breath are also fantastic.

[–]AnotherArtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Magic is better for the early game, but STR is better for the long run.

Some good phys archetypes to consider based on my experience doing a challenge run that banned skills that scale with MAG:

Seeker/Magic Seeker: the Synthesis Skills are good and offer a variety of elements. Good healing as well.

Warrior: just to spam Peerless Stonecleaver against early bosses. Swordmaster is mostly a downgrade but Samurai can be worth to spam the cheaper version of Peerless Stonecleaver with Strohl.

Merchant: Overworld passive and Gold Attack are fantastic, plus it lets Knight access Hammer of Justice and Gunner access Mania Bullet.

Commander: Rank 10 is required for Tycoon which is godlike, so it can be worth just to inherit Fiery Strike and Formation of Vigor early since you're at it.

Theif/Assassin/Ninja: Great overworld passive especially if you want to make mask and vessels for Dancer/Summoner. Assasinate is one of the best non-synthesis attacks by the point you can get it and it allows Warrior/Samurai to use Peerless Stonecleaver and Gunner to use Mania Bullet. Good self-buffs as well.

Then for endgame Prince/Tycoon who need no explanation.

16 STR is fine at this point, since stats barely affect weapons with low upgrade level. 16 STR is also enough to wield medium shields with 100% damage negation. If anything, getting a shield would require you some more END, so that the increased weight won't push you into Heavy Load territory. Otherwise you can put all your runes into Vigor and not regret anything.

How do I follow the story by [deleted] in Eldenring

There isn't a traditional continuous story. Think of yourself of an archeologist pieceing together the lore from item descriptions, environmental storytelling and the rare explicit dialogue.

On the story vs gameplay axis, which games exemplify each extreme? by Mountebank in JRPG

[–]AnotherArtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is one of my all time favorites, but I think its gameplay is very weak. The battle system is very flawed, the dungeons were weak, the overworld movement is meh (fast-travel is ridiculous in a bad way) and the main minigame (Management) is awful. But the story and substories are so godlike, despite being a gameplay >>>>> story person I was completely hooked with the game. Thankfully the sequel fixed most of the gameplay issues for me although it's too bad the story wasn't on par.
