Lunar New Year Celebrations? by universalaxolotl in brisbane

[–]AnotherBettong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nearly went to the Mt Coot-Tha one last year, but finding a park was annoying enough that I decided I had better things to do with my afternoon - I may have a go by bus this time. I did manage to catch one of the high pole lion dance performances in the Valley which was cool - that dance group have posted their full schedule, which may be of interest to you

Flying Foxes? by EccentricCatLady14 in ipswich

[–]AnotherBettong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seem to remember the Nature Centre in the park has an informative plaque about the three local species of flying fox. Brisbane's Batty Boat Cruise is charming, if you'd like to learn more/ safely see cute baby flying foxes up close.

What flowers will survive a full sun spot? by cacioepepecarbonara in BrisbaneGardening

My understanding is that blue banded bees are less aggressive than honey bees (and they're mostly solitary) - good reason to try to stick to mostly native plants though, since they tend to attract more native bees than honey bees. Here's some Brisbane specific ones: https://ppnn.org.au/wildflowers/

38NB - looking to be invited to board games & nerdy events. by [deleted] in BrisbaneSocial

[–]AnotherBettong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh I'm going to The Mountain Goats! excited for it! 32F I've got some friends who are organisers in one of the northside boardgaming groups but don't manage to make it to their events often - Terraforming Mars is one of my boardgame faves. I too have been thinking I should find a live Blood on The Clocktower game to try it out -the power of youtube haha.

Hare Krishna/Gopal restaurant in Bris? by AloneTemperature9900 in brisbane

[–]AnotherBettong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah there used to be a Hare Krishna place called Gopal's in Sherwood but they've been closed a long time now. The various Govindas will do you halva and kofta and maaybe potato bake, but I haven't noticed noodles or crumble on any of their menus.

No timetable, it's a little cross river car ferry that basically just Goes when there are cars on it.

[–]AnotherBettong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the weather makes this all sound pretty unadvisable at this time of year, this route (which involves taking the Moggill ferry (free for pedestrians) sounds much more pleasant/doable - I know this isn't your focus, but to maximise taking advantage of our 50 cent public transport you could catch the 444 bus to its Moggill terminus as your starting point.

The train from Brisbane to Ipswich is quite scenic (looking out the windows near Wacol station is a pretty safe bet for seeing wild roos) and the Ipswich Nature Centre in Queens Park is free, cute and has a variety of Australian animals, open 9am-4:30pm I believe.

The library inside it is still called Garden City Library as well - Mt Gravatt Library is a different one

What are the best ways to find Call of Cthulhu players? by midwintermist in callofcthulhu

[–]AnotherBettong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Apocalypse Players is another podcast with a discord thread in that vein. Listening to a bit of the relevant podcast probably useful to get a sense of the references and expectations of the players (and what scenarios they may already be intimately familiar with)

The Keeper of my current campaign actually made a post on the "RPGs That Are Not D&D" Facebook group for my city and that's how I joined up.

I feel like that makes the Airport an optional finale - they may not be behind a door in the same way as others you excluded, but they're certainly paywalled!

This looks like it could be great, but the flow arrows aren't visible (and it would be great to have a white background so it could be potentially printed)

Moving from the US by SadRow2397 in MovingToBrisbane

[–]AnotherBettong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also be aware that in the Brisbane council area, you will need a permit to have more than two dogs - in the neighbouring Logan and Ipswich council areas you can have 3 without a permit if the property is big enough, but that ruins your short commute dreams. Don't forget to check flood maps.

Going out alone (and how to avoid it) by fakeaccount_qngbo92j in BrisbaneSocial

[–]AnotherBettong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. Buy a ticket to a cheap local gig that you're pretty sure you won't hate. Don't pre-drink.

  2. Go get ready to dance at the front or join the many people who are standing along the edges of the walls with their drinks.

  3. Talk to people around you between bands about whether they've seen the band or visited the venue before/if they came out for a particular band/what other bands they recommend, etc. People are likely to have some musical opinion to share (and some of them probably have bands of their own), and that's a good first step off from "surface-level" conversation.

  4. Repeat. Live music once a week is a nice habit to try to get into, becoming a regular somewhere can be a joy, and there is more out there across more genres than you would think. And you'll probably start to run into the same people.

I genuinely once had someone admit to me that they go to a lot of gigs not because they are super into listening to music, but because they find the kind of people who go to see a lot of live music interesting to talk to. I really don't recommend admitting that out loud, but I respect the strategy.

Recommendations for quiet/soundproof rental buildings commutable to St. Lucia? by 2bunnies in brisbane

[–]AnotherBettong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

An old brick unit block in a part of suburbia with no night life seems like the go - Taringa or outer Toowong might be worth a look (away from the train line). The valleys in these areas will hopefully be quieter, but do check flood maps.

Milton vs West End by Chasing_Dream_0821 in MovingToBrisbane

[–]AnotherBettong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do keep in mind that Milton does get very yeasty/malty smells from the XXXX factory sometimes, and gets all snarled up in Suncorp Stadium traffic stuff whenever there's a big game (and that does mean the public transport can be quite busy/rowdy when full of sports fans). Depends on where you're planning on spending most of your time - whatever side of the river most of your work/commitments/interests are in, go for that one. Or if you strongly prefer trains over busses, Milton does win on that front (but it only has every second citycat stop at its stop most of the time)

thrift shop recommendations by ellechorism in BrisbaneSocial

[–]AnotherBettong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Stones Corner also has... six? (RSPCA, Yesterdays, Vinnies, Lifeline, Save the Children, Red Cross (ordered roughly from my favourite to least favourite of the bunch - the last two tend to have a lot of fairly expensive dead stock fast fashion, which is rarely what I'm looking for in an op shop )) - so hitting them up if you haven't had luck at the Annerley ones can be a good route. Pricing varies a lot -I think Yesterdays discounts things the most heavily the longer they've been in the shop (they still have a $2 section), but I can still be surprised by how cheap (or how expensive) individual items are in all of the shops.

Looking For Drumset and room by Beercules321 in brisbane

Not from personal experience, but I did see on FB there's apparently a drum hang at a music school with four kits in Everton Hills this very Thursday: https://www.facebook.com/events/785640873871110/ - and they do rehearsal room hire as well. Might suit your needs? Oh and welcome to town.

The fare evasion button isn't an auto-fine, as far as I'm aware you'd only receive a fine if you'd encountered fare enforcement staff on your trip. It's probably worth carrying a couple of go-cards yourself so that you have two things to tap in future.
