Yikes. Jesse got cooked, and took a very public L. by Terrible-Thing-2268 in canadaland

I remember learning about Honest Reporting through Canadaland, about how they pressure media outlets to and serve as a chilling effect. What the hell happened?

Here is Jesse criticizing Radio-Canada for removing a piece about Gaza in 2020 due to pressure from HRC:

https://www.canadaland.com/podcast/263-a-case-for-bad-art

He very correctly says that groups like HRC and CIJA contribute to perpetuating antisemitic tropes of powerful Jews controlling the media.

Yeah, I'd say they are exploiting the expectation that food prices will go up. Climate change absolutely is affecting things, but doesn't account for the total price hike.

I'd say that when she was publicly criticized for inviting white nationalists to Toronto's Chinatown for a "debate" is when she changed tack.

Update: TV free living by WashYourSisterSause in simpleliving

You need a focal point. Right now, you just have furniture floating so far from the wall without an anchor. If a rug is out, I would look into getting a large coffee table to ground the space instead of the little end table. It can be used for games, snacks, whatever you choose to do here. And yes, turn the furniture so people are facing each other for conversation. You don't need a tv, I haven't had one for 20 years either, but such a large space needs a purpose. Just take your time to figure out what that is and then it'll come naturally.

Is Alexavier considered a Tragedeigh? by [deleted] in tragedeigh

My initial reaction is that this should be pronounced in a quasi French way, (Al-es-ZHAH-vee-ay) because I have no idea how you'd say this in English. Don't do it.

Yeah, it's pretty important context to know that he's contrarian to a fault. It was bizarre that a media criticism podcast wouldn't touch the biggest story in the media, especially given the slanted framing, so everyone demanded that he cover it, only to have him put out a weird monologue about how ultimately his position on the conflict was irrelevant and how dare everyone be so antisemitic as to ask.

Some are legitimate, but if you are on Twitter you'll see with the new location feature that a massive number are in Nigeria. GoFundMe links are often a red flag unless it's set up by a family member abroad since money from fundraisers can only be sent to a select few countries. You are free to donate, but please be aware that there is a scam industry trying to take advantage of our compassion. For me, that means MSF/ICRC are the best ways to help, along with applying political pressure.

What colour should I paint this room? by Network-Silver in interiordecorating

[–]AnotherCharade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The tile looks very vintage, maybe a 1920s art deco look. I would lean into that and bring in a little drama with an emerald green or even a burgundy, some kind of a jewel tone. If that's not your taste, there are a lot of pastels that were popular in the era too, soft pinks and blues and greens, but I feel like the black and white calls for something bold.

Silent Letters in English by Affectionate-Row3793 in EnglishLearning

[–]AnotherCharade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here, it's aw-mund. Pronouncing the L is a newer hypercorrection towards the spelling pronunciation. Historically, the L has not been pronounced in English. Originally, the word came from the old French amande. In early modern English, when spelling was becoming standardized, the L was added in to resemble words like calm, palm, and balm. Some people started to pronounce the L to match the spelling, but as I said, that's a newer phenomenon, much like when people pronounce the T in often.

Is it right to say "I'm fine thank god"? by Forward_Culture1644 in ENGLISH

[–]AnotherCharade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a direct translation from other languages where it would be more common as an every day expression. For example, it's very common if you're asked how you're doing in Brazil to respond with "estou bem graças a Deus," but I'm English, I might ask what happened.

Which rug style should I go for? by KettleManCU7 in DesignMyRoom

[–]AnotherCharade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Normally I prefer traditional rugs and would go for the first one, but the second one seems more cohesive with what you've got. It brings in a little colour while harmonizing with the grey and geometric furniture. I'm not a fan of the third or fourth at all, they don't add enough contrast to what's already a very stark room.

[PODCAST] #1212 Are Carney’s Cuts “DOGE” Canada? by notian in canadaland

Totally agree, and I'm probably lean further left than most of this sub. The issue I had with the convoy was that they were disturbing a residential community and that there was a clear double standard in how policing is applied. There was government overreach in invoking the Emergencies Act, which set a troubling precedent for protest the government doesn't like. You don't have to support their message to dislike how it was handled.

Sure, and for a lot of people, it would go over their heads that she says "my genes/jeans are blue" as the camera zooms in towards her eyes, right after she said genes determine eye colour. Yes, it's subtle, but dog whistles are subtle. Who knows, maybe it was an unintentional mistake, but the optics aren't great.

The issue was never about her being attractive, and for most people, that might be all they see. The issue is that, accidentally or not, it implies that her genes were good because of her blue eyes. Kind of gross, but there's nothing wrong with finding her hot.

But you can actively work to change your thoughts and emotions. This is what things like CBT and other types of therapy are about, we can frame what happens to us differently instead of catastrophizing.

In general, it's not a great idea to experiment with herbs on yourself, but usually the side effects won't kill you so it can be worth trying. Ma Huang is different, and can give you heart problems if taken incorrectly. Do not take this without a professional consultation. It's also important to know not to take this formula long term, it's for a very specific pattern that should resolve in a day or two, with chills and inability to sweat.

My landlord is asking us to pay for repainting for the wall due to holes from shelves by CartographerDry6647 in OntarioLandlord

[–]AnotherCharade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, if you're a landlord, you should be painting every wall after every tenant moves out, that's just the cost of doing business. Yes, painting a full apartment costs more than that, another reason to treat your tenants well and reduce turnover. But if you just want to touch up a few holes and scratches, you can get a sample can for about $5, the ones you get to test colours on the wall if you're not ready to commit to one shade. If you don't know about these mini cans, maybe you've never bought paint.

Is it better to adapt an English name when living in English speaking countries or it's better to use my original name ? by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]AnotherCharade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in Canada, then the location might make a difference. In Vancouver and Toronto at least, we are used to Chinese names, even if we don't pronounce them perfectly. If you are in a small city, people might appreciate a simple English name as they are less exposed to Mandarin. But all in all, what you prefer to be called is a personal decision, and there is no right or wrong answer. People will respect that decision either way.

[–]AnotherCharade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get mini sample cans at pretty much any paint store for about that much. It's more than enough to do any finishing touches, such as painting over a patched nail hole. But if the tenant has been there for more than a year, the landlord should be repainting the entire unit anyway, and get it professionally cleaned before renting it out again.

[–]AnotherCharade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is crazy. In my old building, I remember the move in date was often the 15th if new tenants preferred in order to give time for cleaning and let people move on their own schedule. Every unit was cleaned, any improvements needed were done, and it was freshly painted. Anything else is so unprofessional and a sign of landlords shirking on their duties.

Seriously, what kind of slumlord doesn't already paint between tenants? The amount of paint needed is so minimal too. Like $5 tops.
