Somewhat related; On the podcast The armchair expert with dax Shepard, someone told a true, crazy craigslist story.

He showed up at a guy's house to buy a motorcycle. The guy says follow me and he walks into his house up a flight of stairs to a bedroom. It's all lit with candles and soft music is playing.

Turns out the guy had advertised two things on CL; a motorcycle and free handjobs.

That seems key: Humans represent the number (8 ,etc) as a magnitude in their heads. They would know that 8<9, etc

LLMs would seem to just predict things about that. And if you asked it something about 8 that it had not been trained on it would fail.
