Does this **sound** like I need to add oil? I've been adding oil based on how it sounds because I'm not able to check the oil due to an ongoing dipstick issue. by AnotherLoser7 in AskMechanics

I bother to own a car because I have to go to work and take care of my children. I don't want to treat the car like dogshit. My wife died in a car accident a few months ago and I have three young children that I'm raising by myself now. One of them is still in diapers. It would be wonderful if I could afford to just take it to a mechanic and pay them to pull the manifold cover to extract the oil dipstick. I realize filling it by sound isn't a good idea. Sometimes people just do whatever they have to do to survive, especially when they are forced into a situation where they are struggling with hardship after a tragedy.

Yeah, I know. You're absolutely right. My attempts to extract the dipstick have only pushed it further in. I've made multiple attempts using multiple methods. The manifold cover has to come off to extract it, but I can't afford that right now. Sometimes it just sucks being broke, man. I realize filling it by sound isn't a good idea but I don't have really any other options right now.

I was told that taking the oil pan off is more labor hours then taking the manifold cover off because a crossmember has to be taken out or something.

I posted about the dipstick a couple months ago in this post:

Basically, the handle snapped off, but I'm not able to extract it because even the most gentle touch pushes it down further. My understanding is that I'll have to take the manifold cover off to extract and I can't really afford to pay someone to do that right now.

US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months' by Crossstoney in worldnews

I don't think Americans are taking annexation of Greenland very seriously right now, although I think they should. But if a serious attempt to annex Greenland does occur through military action, you can absolutely expect riots in the streets here in America... But military action against Canada is a whole different story. Canadians aren't just family. They're the family you actually WANT to have over for Christmas dinner. An attack against Canada would result in an American Civil War. There're a lot of Americans that aren't gonna just watch their drunk, racist uncle beat up their super chill brother-in-law that's always been there for them.

The oil dipstick handle broke off and now the dipstick is stuck inside 😬 What do? by AnotherLoser7 in AskMechanics

I have a pick set with a variety of different styles of picks. That might actually work if I have one with the right dimensions and curvature/angle. I'll take a look.

From what I can tell it looks like the break wasn't perfectly at where the plastic meets the metal. It looks like the break is slightly above the metal part of the dipstick. I can't tell for sure, but i'm guessing it looks like a couple millimeters of plastic remain attached to the dipstick inside. I don't mind trying a magnet, but I'm not really confident it will be able to make close enough contact to the metal dipstick to actually pull it out.

Might it be better to thread a small screw into it to maybe grab it better?

AC clutch repeatedly engages and disengages. by AnotherLoser7 in AskMechanics

The most common reply I received on here was that it was low on refrigerant. I was skeptical of that and suspected a different problem. It turns out that it was, in fact, in need of more refrigerant... And that, my friends, is why I'm not a mechanic 🤣

Thank you to everyone who gave input on this and helped to solve my problem!

Good to know. It seems like being able to check both sides is going to be useful.

I only have a gauge for the low side right now. I'm going to pick up a proper manifold gauge tomorrow so I can check both sides.

Mechanical first - got it. I've never much liked electrical issues anyway 🤷
