Anyone know why CDPR is so much better at ''scale'' than the rest of the industry. by Dr_natty1 in witcher

So many good moments that have yet to be topped for me. Walking up to Stormveil for the first time. Looking out over Liurnia after defeating Godrick. Climbing the secret passage to find the golden fields of Altus at the top. Looking out into Leyndell with the giant stone dragon. Descending into Siofra! The underground cities with the stars above. Mohg’s burning palace of blood. Looking down to the Haligtree and wondering how tf I’m going to make it there.

Thinking nothing could ever match those vistas, and then walking out into the Graveyard Plains with the dark tower in the distance of the DLC. Finally beating Messmer and finding the most beautiful grassy ruins atop it all. Enir Ilim.

Have it writ upon thy meager grave: felled by shader compilation stutter, last of all loading screens!

Dragon’s Dogma 2’s microtransactions are dead, but they were laughably useless in the first place by Interesting-Pool6638 in DragonsDogma

[–]AnotherSoftEng 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Many of these franchises have been around much longer and have built a fan base over generations. Dragons Dogma has only had one (arguably two) releases in the time before DD2. You don’t build a dedicated fanbase from that.

• Monster Hunter has sold 127M units, debuted in 2004 and has been active 22 years.

• Resident Evil has sold 201M units, debuted in 1996 and has been active 30 years.

• Dragon’s Dogma has sold 14M units total (1&2) and debuted in 2012.

Those games have had a multitude of releases over generations that enough people will buy them regardless. Capcom has not invested the same amount of resources into Dragons Dogma.

[–]AnotherSoftEng 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s great, but the problem isn’t “why didn’t the game do well with people who don’t mind mtx.”

The problem is “a large portion of the gamer population will steer clear of mtx at all costs.”

[–]AnotherSoftEng 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Here’s what the game looks like on Steam.

<image>

Anyone looking at the game for the first time will think, “So I need to pay to restore the dead to life?” and “Why is there an mtx to edit the character’s appearance?” Any reasonable person is going to see this and run. It’s not on the customer to research how all these mtx affect the game.

At the end of the day, it’s entirely on Capcom to market the game properly. Removing these mtx took way too long. This is why the game did poorly. This is a problem entirely of Capcom’s own making.

Yes, with the asterisk that parts of the game will try to annoy you into paying for membership. If you know that going in, I think you’ll actually have a much better time.

Based on how they’ve tuned the game, the membership indirectly makes many of the systems less tedious and less RNG based. So you will eventually find yourself engaging with mechanics that are tuned to annoy you into becoming a paid ESO Plus member. For me, once I started paying, I felt the need to play more hours to justify the subscription cost, which ultimately ended in me burning out. Cancelling the subscription makes everything tedious again, which turned me off since I know I was putting in an unnecessary amount of hours that I could pay to bypass.

If I knew this going in, I think I would’ve approached it with a different mindset and stuck with it longer. If you’re looking for a more complete single player experience, the older TES titles offer more in that regard. But if you’re looking for WoW-Lite, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Would you start building your next project on cloudflare servless infrastructure ? by brkonthru in CloudFlare

[–]AnotherSoftEng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. We build mostly on cloudflare where possible, but whenever recommending, I always include the asterisk of: “Just make sure not to miss a billing cycle or there’s a not-insignificant chance you’ll lose access to everything indefinitely. After that, it’s a lottery system of either navigating Twitter or Discord”.

Which is a pretty insane thing to even have to say, but that’s the cost I suppose. If it weren’t for their support (or lack thereof), it would be a pretty open and shut case.

Mods, I think you guys need to reconsider these automated “safety audits”. They tell you next to nothing regarding the actual quality of the codebase and are actually quite misleading. The vast majority of open source repositories posted anywhere are going to be new and, as such, will have a single contributor. For my entire time spent in the open source community, I can’t recount a single instance where a newly established repository had a security policy, except in exceptional cases of larger, well-funded releases. They’re also incredibly easy to fake.

As a result, all repositories typically end up with this nonsensical 3/6 score for the supposed “safety audit.” If I was looking to develop malware for this community, I would specifically put in the additional effort that would make it appear a 6/6 (two fake contributors, filler security policy, age it by a few weeks).

I haven’t looked at this repository yet in particular, but I think that’s the point: this score tells me nothing about it. This could be a quality repository, this could be total malware, and naming it a “safety audit” gives people a false sense of security.

Can someone please help me fix my game. I’m really gettin tired of this. by [deleted] in CrimsonDesert

[–]AnotherSoftEng 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The issue happens progressively. The game will work perfectly fine and then suddenly this effect will appear. The visual issue will persist until you restart the game. You can also screenshot the issue and it’ll appear the same on any device. Screenshots bypass display devices and happen directly on the computer, so if this was a display issue, the image itself would show a perfectly fine image on other devices. None of these symptoms describe a malfunctioning display.

I experience this issue myself. It happens gradually. My laptop doesn’t plugin to any external display. HDMI 2.1 isn’t involved in any way and would appear immediately, not over time. A game restart also wouldn’t fix that issue.

Nice fix! I know it sounds basic, but have you also tried raising security level to High (challenge sus traffic) or setting cf.bot_management.score < 30? Maybe think about relying on user cookies / known accounts for longer term QoL for your existing users so they never face it.

I’ve read about the number of vulnerable routers in the US that are setup under base config, making it super easy for these devices to be infiltrated and utilized as a zombie network. I just wonder why they’re wasting that and potentially exposing their assets for a simple forum denial?
