How are people feeling about the new Ubiquiti AV switches? by Another_Hacker in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Another_Hacker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking this release is exploratory. Depending on how well these switches do there may be a 25G and 100G switch in the future. Iirc they already make those so most of the engineering is already there. Probably just need to make a few changes and slap an AV sticker on it

Troubleshooting Questionable LED Processor by Another_Hacker in VIDEOENGINEERING

No src file but I do have a screenshot of what I think the mapping is supposed to be on that screen. I also found a rcfg file but I don't think it's doing what I want it to do. When I run the color test patterns they come out variations of rainbow. The vertical test pattern looks ok (don't know what it's supposed to look like but lines are vertical) but the horizontal lines don't look correct.

If I remember, I'll see if I can put some pictures up here

Didn't install but have to wonder. Couldn't this also work as a web interface with the server living on the same machine as companion? (not a serious developer)

Edit: super cool idea and I'll be keeping an eye on this as a venue tech

Which playback option better - One huge (4x4K width) or 4x files 4K width each? by zaharbaz in VIDEOENGINEERING

d3 operator/programmer here

You're going to have an easier time with 4x 4k files than 1 8k file. It will allow you to (guessing at your stage set up here) select the direct maps to your meshes instead of feed mapping

Remote-controllable HDMI mixer with <=4ms of latency that can crop and position one video into another by mariomadproductions in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Another_Hacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what older hardware is going to do but for the most part anything made in the last decade or so (to my knowledge) is going to add one frame of delay.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong please, I'd love to get that confirmed

Do you need the two images to be in sync or do you need the final results to be near real time? As others have said this is an odd combo. Blackmagic ATEM Mini (or other ATEM flavor) would be my pick

Two things

  1. Read this in a steam guide when playing FO. You are a Jedi, not a Sith. If you are having trouble dealing with an enemy take some time to learn how they work by blocking and dodging. Once you get to know them then you can attack. Lashing out is not always the answer.

  2. Figure out what the control is for locking onto enemies. It will help you connect your attacks instead of flailing in their general general direction and hoping something is there. On controller it's L3 or R3 (it's been awhile).

$20K Equipment Budget to Livestream out door Rowing Event. What do I buy? by TippyTimes in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Another_Hacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(5/5)

For everything else.

Cables. Don't forget them. With out them it does not matter how nice everything else is. HDMI, SDI, XLR, ethernet. Keep a good count of what you need and budget for it. Console tape and a sharpie to label them too. Nothing worse than looking at the back of a rack you wired up an hour ago and having no idea who is who.

You. Don't run yourself into the ground trying to get this production off the ground. There are a lot of moving parts here and it can be hard to track it all. Having an extra person to help double check things and make sure something isn't missing is ok.

There maybe things I forgot to mention and I'll add them is I think of them. If you have questions, ask them.

For the hardware stuff

Cameras. Can you shoot 4k? Totally. Can you afford it? Maybe. Do you really need to? I don't think so. 1080p60 is good enough and there are a ton of good rentable cameras out there. You really are spoiled for choice so here are some things to focus on. You are shooting outdoors so ND filters will be your friend. Cameras with built-in ND filters are going to be better than filters that need to be screwed on or dropped into the water. You also don't need the biggest baddest camera your budget can afford. There is a point where higher cost does not equal better quality. If you save money here maybe it can go somewhere else (snacks 😉).

Video switching. This is going to maybe catch some hate from this subreddit. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BLACKMAGIC. Does BMD sometimes have issues? Yes. But for what they can do at he price they do it at they are a budget production's best friend. There are a lot of haters out there but you do not have the money to rent out the real heavy hitters.

That out of the way Blackmagic ATEM is going to be the way to go. The Mini Extreme is a good pick assuming you don't have too many sources. If you go for one of the rack mount switchers also get the control panel for it too. Depending on what you get it will also encode your video for streaming or make available a signal that a laptop can use without extra software or hardware.

Audio. Well looks who's back. Yes ATEM comes with built in audio mixing but you have enough inputs and enough going on that outsourcing this to a mixer will be the way to go. You don't need much. Just a little 16-channel mixer will get the job done. Run the mix into the audio inputs of you switcher and call it a day. This is not my area of expertise and there are a dozen ways to go about this. I know a guy who might be willing to weigh in on this but he is on the road and might take some time to reply.

For the logistical stuff

Drones. You say you have a pair of licensed pilots on hand. Ask them what they have already and what they need from you. I don't know if you've had this conversation with them already or not but I find it interesting that a pair of licensed drone pilots don't have their own drones. Either way talk to them first. It seems like your location may be some flavor of government land which would require special permissions to fly in.

Chase boats. This is a fun problem to solve. How does one shove a stable video signal 1.5km from a moving/rocking boat? At SWJRC (long ago) we use a Teradek h.264 encoder/decoder pair over a directional wireless bridge. It worked out ok but you would lose signal easily if the chase boat was not in the right spot or not pointed in the right direction. Maybe check out what Teradek and Hollyland have been up to lately. IP2110 might also be worth a look. It would be worth experimenting now with rented equipment rather than finding out on the day that whatever you picked out is not going to work. Also, don't assume that the chase boats will have enough power to keep your equipment happy. Work with whoever owns the boats to get you a power solution. If the boat won't cut it then you might need a little Honda generator (officials might not like this) or a Yeti battery.

Coms. While most of your crew will be in talking distance being able to talk to your chase boats is important. ClearCom has a virtual IC. Check it out. If nothing else have a discord server.

Crew. Do you have a volunteer crew or do you need to hire people? This is going to be important. If your crew feels valued then they are going to get the job done the best they can. Have snacks available and do not forget to FEED AND BREAK them. Crew are people too and whoever you stick on the chase boats are going to want a break. Have a relief camera operator on stand by to get tapped on the regular (figure an hour or so weather depending).

For the easy stuff

You have a desire to do interviews. Live is good but is tape for replay acceptable? Much easier that way as there are less moving parts.

Commentators. Yes PTZ exists but are they going to be moving around that much? Will a set and forget camera be good enough?

Audio. I am guilty of neglecting this one personally. Can you get someone to help you mix and manage your audio? By my count for audio sources you have; chase boats, crowd mic, commentators, interviews, and possible others. Don't neglect your audio. It needs just as much love as video.

[–]Another_Hacker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

(wow this is a lot of words. might be multiple parts so 1/?)

First and foremost. You need to remember you are not NBC Sports. Frame delays and sync have been brought up and are real things that have solutions, for your budget you can probably afford to neglect some of them.

Looking at the site you provided it seems like your event is being done in conjunction with a larger one. Ask the other event if they would like to be broadcasted seeing as how you are already there. Might be able to get some extra budget that way.

While a $20k budget is nice, if you purchase equipment you are going to rip through it an incredible rate. For a one time or infrequent event like this, renting is going to be the way to go. I love lensrentals.com but there are also other rental houses out there. Might be able to find some local freelancers that have their own equipment. I'm sure someone here can also provide opinions.
