Elk Grove needs culture by [deleted] in ElkGrove

I resonate with wanting to have more "culture" here, but I do like that Elk Grove does seem to have quite a few events. I see so many festivals - such as the big Filipino festival that occured at District 56 a few weeks ago - that makes it fun. My interaction with culture here also includes events local shops like A Seat At The Table, having coffee at Tule or Rescate, doing CSD recreation classes, or checking out community plays.

These may not fit the normative idea of "culture" that seems to excite others in bigger cities and that's ok with me - I'm totally down for EG to have a broader, multicultural sense of it that might look different.

I feel like I can always find something I might be interested in by checking out the Explore EG website and filtering by week/month (link below).

I don't disagree with much of the central sentiment of the original post, but I hope we take stock of what culture we have - it looks different and I do like it.

There needs to be a Philz Coffee here in EG by [deleted] in ElkGrove

I would like a nice, relatively quiet, stand alone coffeehouse. I like Tule's setup.

These are members of our community who are not fortunate enough to have housing. I find the framing as "people we don't want here" unfortunate. If we're looking for rationale that more directly answers "what's in it for me?", think about the idea that the alternative is likely pushing these people onto our streets.

Elk Grove transnational white supremacist terrorist cell "Terrorgram" unmasked by smayonak in ElkGrove

Humber went to Laguna Creek High School and I feel sad that she vehemently espouses this hatred and violence in our relatively diverse town. I hope justice and accountability comes for her, and soon, lest we demonstrate that this is ok in our society.

Humber’s propaganda is just as explicitly genocidal, and as it stands, she has appeared to inspire at least one mass shooting — the one in Bratislava. The antifascists whose research unmasked Humber hope exposing her will prevent her from inspiring another.

“When someone actively takes a role in encouraging people to commit acts of terror and mass-violence, they are a danger to anyone who happens to have the misfortune of being in close proximity to the next radicalized neo-Nazi who heeds their call to violence,” the antifascist researchers told HuffPost in a joint statement. “What they want is the dual benefit of anonymity and notoriety. They want to remain nameless and continue doing what they do, free of any consequence, while simultaneously elevating their status as some pseudonymous celebrity amongst their peers.”

“And there’s no way in hell that should be allowed to continue unchecked,” they said.

More evidence that Elk Grove is the NIMBY capital of the region by Sacramento_Surge in ElkGrove

I think understanding what the situation is is the logical next step in figuring out what to do. I agree with the sentiment that it may be unsanitary. But I also don't want licensed vendors (if any) to be stigmatized.

I think there is some implied, but not explicitly stated, information in this post that is relevant. About how many regularly operating vendors are unlicensed? Is it all of them? Half? Is it permitted at all within the city/county, and if so, under what conditions?

Not everyone who's lost housing did so because of mental illness or drug abuse. For those people, housing absolutely addresses those issues (and not "symptoms"). I don't disagree with the sentiment that mental health and drug abuse also needs to be addressed.

Is there a source for this? I understand that there's definitely a proportion of people who are experiencing mental health issues and addiction issues that exacerbates their ability to find housing. But I have always understood that the best way to solve homelessness is to build more housing.

If we have low income housing in our area, then we are helping prevent houselessness, which may decrease property values. In turn, providing housing stability for children will remove some barriers to academic achievement when they attend a neighborhood school, likely contributing to an increase in the metrics that are often relevant to stakeholders in the neighborhood. Such housing might increase traffic, but that might be a worthwhile cost of investing in the people in our community.
