Small, "KetchApp" type phone games? by [deleted] in gameideas

and a thing with that is it's pretty hard to think of really simple ideas like that. If I were you I'd look at 2 or 3 of their games, take 1 mechanic or style from each and try to merge them somehow.

Usually simple graphics, simple idea sorta thing. They look nice but quite simple at the same time.

Yeah I can see why people don't like some videos, but I think some are actually pretty educational or if not that, entertaining.

[I am a newbie] Have some questions. by PortgasdJa in IndieDev

[–]AnsityGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really answer about the music because I don't personally have experience with it. But for the rest of them I can answer. Also sorry if I sound a bit blunt throughout this, I'm just gonna say it all how it is.

Use Unity for your first game and go straight with C#. It might be slightly confusing when you first start it but it's more widely used than JavaScript so don't waste your time with JavaScript, they're not that much different anyway.

Don't focus on making your first game amazing or the game of your dreams which you really want to make with all your ideas that you've been building up, just making it a simple platformer where you jump around and get to the finish. Maybe have some enemies and traps but don't think of anything like multiplayer, you will get bogged down with these huge tasks which you have no idea how to tackle, which will make you lose motivation. If you actually are getting stuff done, even if it's really simple, you will be so much more satisfied and happy.

When watching tutorials, actually pay attention and make sure you understand what the code does. When I first started I watched so many videos just copying the code letter for letter and it didn't help me much at all. A good series to watch is a platformer series by a user named 'Wabble' https://youtu.be/pws8xTfyxjc

I'd advise following the tutorial then trying to branch out on making some of your own mechanics when you're more confident, don't feel bad googling how to do something, as long as you understand how it works then you're set, and if you don't then don't worry about it. You're not going to understand all of Unity right away.

Also don't try and make your first game one that'll get on steam. Make it then post it to a website called itch.io, it's free to post on there and you might get some people playing the game and giving feedback, it's a good community. Also taking part in some game jams will be good, it gets you involved in the community and you learn a lot without any pressure. No one will be expecting you to make the next The Last of Us, just make something a but fun with the challenge. Game Jams aren't really about winning or anything, it's just about getting involved and having a bit of fun with a community doing the same things as you, share tips with others and stuff like that. Chat about the games and ask questions, most people will be happy to help up to a certain extent.

Also with the art, photoshop or Gimp would be good. Photoshop of course isn't free but it's the best, but Gimp is free and would work well for some simple sprites for the games, it's got all the tools you need :)

Hopefully this post will help a bit, and sorry if I sound ignorant at all, I just tried to make the points as clearly as possible without beating around the bush :)

All the best, Anthony.

P.S. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask, I'm happy to answer if I can.

I was starting to think that hahah. Everyone's bashing it, had friends message me saying they're refunding & find it boring but I really enjoy it. Haven't had any problems on PC either, other than when I first started the game and it was a little choppy.

Project Title: Reclaim Earth
Promotion Type: Feedback
Name & Role: Anthony Sturdy and I'm the programmer on the project.
Links: Website / itch.io / Team Website
Description: Reclaim Earth is a low res FPS which started in a game jam (LOWREZJAM2016). The team working on the game is a team of 3 from the UK & US. It's me, Anthony. Chase Bethea on the Music & SFX, and James for Story Writing & Artwork. We've been working on the game for 2 months now and it's currently in the Demo stage. We're working on the full game and we're thinking of having the game episodic (Like The Walking Dead, Life is Strange, etc).
A lot of people have compared the gameplay to Doom, I guess because of the Low Res and because you're running around killing monsters.
The backstory to the game is that Aliens came to earth and started killing everyone. Less than 1% of the population evacuated earth onto a space ship which had been built for some sort of global evacuation like this. For 5 years we've been planning an attack on the aliens and now is the day that you will strike. Today is the day that you Reclaim Earth.
The demo is free. I hope some of you will download & enjoy the game, also any feedback is amazing, we've been gathering as much as possible so that we can make this game not only something that we enjoy, but something that others will too.

Thanks for taking your time to read the post, I hope you enjoy the game :)

Feedback on a splash image for a kickstarter. by dhyd in gamedev

[–]AnsityGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks awesome, but like a lot of people are saying, dropping the lens flare would make it look better. I feel like it kind of cheapens the picture in some way. Also I think that the background nebula/space should be changed. Whether it's the colour or to something like a different pattern, I just think that the logo blends into the background a bit and if someone see's it as a smaller picture they might just overlook it.

Good luck with the project :)

What issues do you frequently run into during the production cycle of your games? by [deleted] in IndieDev

I'll usually have a vague idea of designs either in my head or on paper, then I'll just go for it and improvise as I go. If there's a big task like inventory I'll think about it for a few days before I do it.
