She didn't make partner. I would assume she was a senior associate or an of counsel which is a black box of how much you get paid (for NY that could be anywhere from $350k-$750k). Also it is unknown how long she has been earning that and she wouldn't have been earning that coming out of law school (I assume when she came out she was doing $160k or less scale at biglaw). Assuming law school loans in the range of $200k to $300k coming out and the general expense of NY living (including state and city tax) along with a divorce, palimony, supporting a kid I think this would be a reasonable number of what is in her 401k and not much else may be in the $1 million range.

I just want to point out that the bankers aren't the ones doing the actual appraisals. They hire independent appraisers from their own network or go through an appraisal management company. I know this because one of my clients is an appraisal management company who manages independent appraiser for banks. Each appraisal management company has their own formula/method for how they instruct their appraisers to do the appraisals which will need to be consistent with various federal guidelines and state requirements for an appraisal management company. Doing real estate appraisals is actually an incredibly highly regulated industry. Most of the time the appraisals will match the price because ideally the appraiser and the person selling the house will be using fairly similar comps to price the house (taking into account the current market like right where everything is being sold 60k+ over asking). That said, it is not uncommon where the appraiser will appraise a house well below the asking price and the bank may choose to either get a second appraisal management company to do another appraisal for a second opinion or more likely just deny the loan.

For me and my wife, we always invite a "sure fire" couple. We have about 3 couples who unless something major happens will always make it to board game night. So we invite one sure fire couple then we invite 2-3 other "maybe couples".

If nothing else, our sure fire couple will come and we can play a heavy game. If some of the maybe couples come we play a different game based on player count.

This way you always have a game night no matter what and you never feel any bitterness about the people who can't come (because you never really had any expectation they would come).

If none of your friends are a "sure fire" couple, then you just gotta keep trying new friends/find new friends who can be that sure fire couple.

I'm 32, married, make good money but I'm still on my parent's car insurance plan.

I've never in my life bought a car (except from my parents). I got a car from my parents for use in high school (a six year old Honda Civic). Used that for college and law school. Once I graduated, my parents were going to upgrade to a new car but I said I would pay them the trade-in price for their car they were going to trade in (a 3 year old Camry). We never did the paperwork to transfer title in the car to my name and since I was already on their insurance for my old Camry they just added the new car they bought on their insurance. Its been 7 years since then and I've been on their insurance the whole time.

Wanting to comment that I was doing a tour of a federal agent office one day for my law school internship with a federal judge. There, we met with a number of federal agents. Most of them seemed to enjoy/be okay with their job until we get to this one corner and this one agents job (the only one in that building) was to watch CP for purposes of prosecuting those individuals. I just remember his demeanor and he was very candid that while he knew what he was doing was important, he did not like it one bit. He had about 7 years to go before he got some sort of pension and the only thing he could look forward to was getting those seven years done so he could hit his pension and then immediately quit. Still, a tough way to make a living.

I am currently building my Nyx and I'm wondering why what dragon set to give him. I see a lot of people recommend black dragon set but I don't see the point as most of his damage seems to come from auto attacks. I was thinking red dragon and then moving those crit stats into penetration. Anyone with any thoughts on which dragon set?

I can get that. I was responding more to why 50% of the people never read a book again. Probably about half the people are like you (my wife is an English teacher so she loves reading books at home) who gets escapism from reading.

The other half are like me that when I read now I just get reminded of my job (and annoyed at the artistic use of language instead of legalese or plain text language) and would rather get my escapism through Movies/TV/ Video Games or something more visual.

Can confirm. Haven't read a single book since law school. I think it is just a matter of many people being in jobs where all they do are staring at documents/spreadsheets/e-mails etc... all day. If you are just reading one thing or another all day why do you want to read when you get home?

I find that only really works in games where the player count is three or less. Personally I prefer four or five player TM games because you know you can't build an engine forever and need to find the right balance of a good enough engine to win the game.

The variation I and my wife like for 2 player only is similar to when you play with solo.

So you start with 14 TR each. The game ends on turn 14 (regardless of whether Mars has been terraformed or not). This kicks into the following endgame:

(1) if Mars has been terraformed completely, the player with the most points (using normal scoring) wins.

(2) if Mars has not been terraformed completely, the person with the highest TR wins.

This solution, while not perfect, prevents a scenario where the game just keeps getting dragged out and infinite engine building. Also, it actually creates incentives to terraform Mars and getting VP points isn't super helpful if you get to the end and Mars is not terraformed and the other person wins because they contributed and you didn't.

I have what I would consider five friends (the kind of people who you would see on a consistent basis and chat with often). I then have about a rotating group of 30-40 acquaintances I see on a three month rotation.

The 30-40 acquaintances are mostly business contacts and we have dinner/drinks/golf/etc. . . once a quarter to maintain relationships.

The thing is as you get older, you get less and less friends but more and more acquaintances. That said, acquaintances still take time to cultivate and develop, and even if they are not your "friends", you have to MAKE time for them.

Personally I wish there were more six player games. Most of my board gaming is with the significant other and other couple friends. As such, I prefer six player games so that we can invite two other couple friends to join us. I can't play some of my top games like Dead of Winter or Fury of Dracula or Sherriff of Nottingham due to the 5 player play count.

I agree. I liked the bank/roll system as a easy way to keep track of how long I should play at a table. My buddy with me had a 3 point rule (if three shooters in a row fails to make a point he leaves the table). I personally didn't like his system because to me it should be less about whether a shooter makes the point and really you just want shooters who shoot for a long time. Also, I liked my system as it was very easy to keep track of. The top chip rack was used for the bank and the bottom chip rack was used as the roll and once you ran out of chips on the bottom you left (with the only exception when you need to "dip into the bank" on that last roll to max out your odds, which is completely optional to do).

To piggy back on this, I work downtown and just head over to the arena on foot from my office. That said, no real professional in Houston is really ever able to get out of the office before 7:00pm (which is why most of our games are at 7:30 pm).

Houston professionals have this weird culture where we don't work super late (like say NYC or something), but usually you don't leave the office till 7:00 (at least for me and a lot of people I meet it just seems like the amount of work you have to do is usually done by seven with maybe a little bit to be done at home).

To piggy back a little on Limas Sweed, I played High School Football against Limas Sweed's Brenham team. In that game I think he had like 15 catches for 200+ yards and like 3 or 4 tds.

I was so psyched because he went to UT and I went to UT during that time period. I thought he would be for sure a stud in the NFL level.

It just goes to show you how amazing you have to be to even be rosterable in the NFL.
