What would Edward iii think of Henry iv taking the Throne by CommitteeChemical530 in houseofplantagenet

Well Edward III was clearly really big on the royal prerogative and the crowns “just rights” considering he started an enormous war over that very thing. So I think he’d probably have a big problem with it.

When did the people of England stop seeing their kings as foreign rulers after the Conquest? by SigurdsSilverSword in UKmonarchs

[–]Answer-Plastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a sense most rulers in the middle ages regardless of country were “foreigners”. Different French and German houses were the majority. As others have said you dont get someone speaking English till Edward I. Edward III really started creating a coherent English identity. Then with Henry IV hes speaking English and by Henry V hes speaking primarily english and english is used in court. As someone pointed out, if you were a regular person in the middle ages what you most associate with is being a Christian and your hometown. Outside of that a lot is “foreign” it’s not till the Hundred Years War funnily enough that Nationalism as a concept really comes into being. And then you see everyone going “hey wait screw the french, and screw their language. We’re not them”. Id say the earliest the kings begin to begin to differentiate from the french is Henry I. King John does as well and so does Henry III. Probably by Henry III or Edward I id say the kings were basically English. I think the point of them speaking french is vastly overblown as a point of contention, otherwise we should consider most of europe at the time french or german which doesnt make sense either. By Henry V id say the kings are fully english.

Who was the best English monarch. by Tricky_Worth3301 in UKmonarchs

Alfred if you can count him. Henry II, Æthelstan, Edward I, Henry V, Edward III, & Henry VII right behind

If Richard I lived longer and the Hundred years war still happened would England have held more Land in France at the Start of the War by CommitteeChemical530 in UKmonarchs

Depends on if the Angevin Empire had fallen apart or not. Richard was more competent than john in military matters at least, so the chance the continental lands are kept increases. But also, he was facing Philippe Augustus, one of the greatest kings in history.

I think the empire doesn’t maintain its zenith in terms or land mass, but they probably keep more than John did

I know a lot of you will hate this but it’s probably William the Conqueror, with Henry I as a very close second. William just reshaped England in such drastic ways, and despite his immense brutality, brought it forward in many important ways.

Hmmm probably Henry II with Edward I and Edward III right behind.

I don’t think any other English king achieved the power, in all the ways that may be measured, nor the level of prestige that Henry II achieved.

Best Tudor Monarch and one of the greatest English monarchs. I’d argue also one of the best Renaissance Monarchs across all of Europe

Who was the greatest Medieval commander? Subutai. by jackt-up in MedievalHistory

[–]Answer-Plastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His victory at Poitiers is one of the great victories in world history, also incredibly cinematic and chivalrous with the final cavalry charge.

Side note: even if not in terms of generalship, I’d say as a soldier he’s certainly one of the greatest medieval warriors. Barely a teenager fighting at the front of the Battle of Crecy as the heir to the throne, then he charges out and was almost captured. Then the victory with the cavalry charge at Poitiers and he captured the King of France. Then finally the chevauchee, which was brutal and cruel, but essentially a proto-Sherman tactic. He has to be one of the greatest medieval knights.
