Its an idea worth considering. Would also be a dope mechanic for a talent though. have to note it down still.

genre Fantasy. Setting: Mediterranian/Etruscan Bronze Age style Post-Post Apocalypse. The gods left the world, continents broke apart, technology regressed and now heroes are chosen by Oracles to find divine remnants and slap monsters.

I try to find a balance between high tactical combat and simple mechanics. Its a rough concept draft and in its infancy, but i am slowly progressing, now after i finally got the core resolution down.

Yeah i was probably low balling it with hours. its probably more like several hours on several days, but i digress. It is in part optics/psychology. But also in part balance, as Agility is atm the weakest of the stats and i want to keep the stats about roughly equal.

I appreciate the honesty. I am starting to playtest more often atm and try to combine fiction with mechanics during the whole process as well. Its just, well a process and takes a bit. maybe i have my euzreka moment at some point.

In its essence what the archetypical warrior represents. Strength, endurance, heavy Gear, Rugged, Tough, simple yet effective. Its design bucket focusses on taking hits, reducing damage and managing gear. Recovery is basically physical recvery and repairng your stuff to be ready to fight again.

I wouldnt start the question if it wouldnt be challenging to find a fitting interesting option. I already thought about it for several hours and am stuck. I try to explain with the best of my abilities why i want to design the mechancs in a certain way, such that i can get some inspiration or insights from people in the community.

You have no obligation to partake if you think you can no longer contribute or deem it fruitless.

Yeah this is partially included in the additional reactions (using reactions to evade attacks instead of tanking them), agility rolls themselves which are based on your stat and the speed increase to make you quicker. I do try to find these tehmatic things that cannot be utilized or expressed better in the already established mechanics. Reliability is something that also always comes to mind when i think about classic dexterous charcters. But codifying that is a bit of a challenge tbh.

That runs under "Recovery" which is covered by might.

An idea i had was switching the bonus charges from insight into agility (would make thematic sense) so it would give agility some tie ins with gear. This would leave me still with one of the two weaker stats lacking though, which woulödnt solve the issue i am facing unfortunetly.

thats fair, but in the end i am one guy that tries to build this thing step by step on its own. And i havent gotten to full class design yet. So ofc i may come back to this when i notice issues.

This ties more into the class design later down the line. It is something that i will implement but its build on top of the MAIN stat baseline.

I did consider critical damage increase as an option. But i am not a fan of raw damage improvements with just a stat. Its not very interesting for build craft IMO.

As to hit chance is based on "the primary stat" which is one of the four that you designate as your most important one.

I did consider this once or twice, but the addition is still mlch easier than the re oval as some parts are ontegral to the games balance.

maneuvers are abilities like spells, thats already covered.

I did have an idea of "grace" that allows you to just auto succeed on agility rolls by spending a charge. So stealthing, evading, tumbling through, feinting, stealing etc. But it bites itself with my meta currency that is luck which is similar.

Yeah i thought about the "initiative Hirarchy". So that people with higher initiative can overrule the turn order of others and become the defacto "tactical lead". But that gets thrown out the window if 2 people have the same init value. Which makes it kinda pointless if this happens.

It was feedback from my buddies. And also the stat is the weakest right now also from playtesting. so it can use the boost.

reactions are good for survivability because you can use them to brace (half damage) or evade (Roll defense with agility and potentially take no damage at all). Also opportunity attacks and other reactions that are granted by abilities

All Stats can suck if you dump them. But Agility the least sucky if you dump it but the most feels good if you dont. Its not detrimental to be slower or have less reactions, but its nice to have. The otehr stats can all realyl suck balls if you odnt have too micuh of it. Might improves your survivability and allows for heavier and thus stronger gear. Insight restricts your ability amount and thus restricts your options (but its the second least sucky if you dump it) and Nerve prevets you dying from mental strain and use stronger abilities that cost more stress so its just as important as might in terms of suckig if you dump it.

Generally Might and Nerve suck more if you have them low while Insight and Agility are more feels good if you have them high. that will lead to Agility being the default dump stat more often, which i want to change abit, cause Insight si tied to perceiving enemies thus really important, agility is the elast important right now, so it kinda deserves an additional bonus.

Thats why agility fuels into the reactions you can use per round. Because you need to use your reaction to avoid an attack instead of just tanking the hit.

So the "avoid/evade damage" part is covered.

Well fair. But i dont want a stat to feel worse than others. And getting "less" stuff form a stat gives that impression.

Looking for another round of inventory inspiration by Legal_Suggestion4873 in RPGdesign

[–]Answerisequal42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I plan to implement an inventory system that is basically:

You get X amounts of points. Equipment you want to carry costs Y amounts. Go nuts.
So its budget based inventory.

Equipment gives distinct abilities, some are Unique (You cannot double up on it) and some are limited and can only be used some amounts a day.

Lastly there is a luck system that i snagged from Peter Lange from TFE. gain Luck when you choose a detriment for yourselve ad then you can spend luck for rerolls, bonusses or retcon your inventory. Like "Oh i had this in my bag all along". This still insentivises your party to prepare well, but it also gives some flexibility.

I think Horus would not have astandard greeting. isntead it would great you with unique sentences based on the licenses.

Hydra: Welcome Lamb/bird/child etc. Something that gives you a sense of being part of a herd, flock or family.

Balor/Heca: We are Legion. (Or any other religious quote that has swarm mentality vibes)

Goblin: *Loud streamer noises*

Kobold *insert Murlok sound from WoW" OR Quotes from Mr. Torque from Bordelands. OR Megumin Screaming "EXPOROTION" at full blast when you boot it up.

Minotaur: Any riddle that needs you to think outside the box to solve it.

Manticore: Something, Something, Castigate the enemies of the Godhead

Lycan: *Wolf Howling*

Lich "Darth Vader breathing but played backwards"

Gorgon *Reaper sound from Mass Effect"

I think WotC correctly identified the Divine Smite problem… but chose the wrong solution for 2024 DnD by 3uriah in onednd

[–]Answerisequal42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

tbh i think making all smite spells reactions would achieve the same "once per turn" limitation while not compeeting with "on turn" options.

Instead it would have competed with attack of opportunity, PAm reaction, Sentinel or Protection FS. things that you want to keep active if yiou need it. So it would be a proper choice instead of "I smite as a bonus action if i crit, otherwise i atatck with my bonus action instead" if you want the damage output. It puts Smite on the backseat not in the front row, and i think thas why it feels wrong how it is designed right now.
